Introduction: So we had a virtual meeting of the Governing Body Commission, we have every two weeks, on Wednesday. Today we were discussing about a memorial garden, for the deceased sannyāsīs, etc. So Hṛdaya Caitanya Prabhu is the convener, and he will make a new committee, to report to the GBC. So, we are reading an aspect of the Kṛṣṇa Caitanya book, where Lord Caitanya has decided He would take sannyāsa. He was now talking with different devotees, trying to pacify them. So far He talked to Śrīvāsa, He is talking to Mukunda Datta [dāsa], after that Murāri and then Gadādhara. So, this is heart-rending, because everyone is very much committed, to having the association of Lord Caitanya, and so we will go on now. Continuing the chapter:

The Lord Consoles Śrīvāsa, Mukunda, Murāri and Gadādhara

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.106

ekhana jānila-tora kaṭhina antara
viṣakumbha-paya yena tāhāra upara

Jayapatākā Swami: So Mukunda Datta, he is expressing his lamentation, separation of the Lord. Out of love, he is saying things to the Lord. He is saying that, “I have understood that Your inside is very hard, Your heart. Your heart is like a pot of poison, with a little milk on the top.”

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.107

kāṣṭhera modaka yena karpūra chāiyā
gilite nā pāre yena tāhā nā bujhiyā

Translation: Your heart is like a wooden modaka candy anointed with camphor, without understanding that this candy can never be eaten.

Jayapatākā Swami: Some devotees have asked, that it seems in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, there is a lot of suffering. You see, because of intense love for the Lord, devotees are saying such things. But such love, although it may seem like suffering, it’s actually an expression of their love, and that love is the highest ecstasy.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.108

tumi deśāntare yābe- ki kāja jīvane
sabhāre niṭhura tumi hailā ki kāraṇe

Jayapatākā Swami: You will go to another country. What is the use if we don’t stay alive? Why have you become cruel to us? What is the reason? Why? Why?

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.109

tila eka tora mukha nā dekhile mari
kāndite kāndite kichu kahaye murāri

Jayapatākā Swami: Not seeing Your face, even for a sesame seed quantity of time, but not seeing You we will die. Crying and weeping, Murāri Datta spoke something.

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 11.47: In the evening, the Lord went to Murāri’s house. He gave instructions, saying that he should take shelter of Advaita while describing Advaita’s character. On another day, the merciful Lord crossed the Gaṅgā and, tolerating difficulties, went immediately to one village.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.18.25: Then at dusk, out of kindness Śrī Hari accompanied by Haridāsa went to Murāri's home. At once Murāri…

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.18.26: ...fell at the Lord's feet offering respectful. With a satisfied mind, Murāri brought and gave Him to a seat. He also bowed to the feet of Haridāsa and then situated himself nearby Śrī Gaurāṅga.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.18.27: That ocean of compassion said to Murāri, “Hear Me. Because you are always detached, therefore you must strictly follow My instruction.”

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.18.28: With great attention hear My words. Today I am giving you instructions. Just fix your mind upon them.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.18.29: The great and noble Advaita Ācārya is the plenary portion of the Lord, and the shelter of all pure qualities. Therefore, respectfully serve Him with full endeavor

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.18.30: Thus have I made known to you this most confidential information, for your perfectional stage of transcendental happiness.” So saying, the Lord, who is always affectionate to His bhaktas, departed for His home.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Gaurāṅga was preparing all the associates, for His departure as a sannyāsī. Therefore, He gave each one some instruction. Murāri Gupta was given instruction to take shelter of Advaita Gosāñi.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.110

śuna śuna viśvambhara gaura bhagavān
adhama murāri bole - kara avadhān

Jayapatākā Swami: O Supreme Personality of Godhead, Viśvambhara, Gaura! Please listen, listen! The fallen Murāri, speaks. Please give Your attention.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.111

ropile apūrva vṛkṣa aṅguli dhariyā
bāḍhāile divāniśi siñciñā kum̐riyā

Jayapatākā Swami: You, with Your own finger, planted a wonderful tree. You watered it day and night, and it grew, and it sprouted buds.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.112

tile tile rākhile ḍhākile bahuyatne
rāndhile tarura mūla diyā nānā ratne

Jayapatākā Swami: Slowly and gradually, You protected and covered it with great care. You carefully built a protection around it, with various priceless jewels, at its base.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.113

phala phula kāle gācha phelāha kāṭiyā
mariba āmarā-sara hṛdaya phāṭiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: When the time for the flowers and fruits to be produced by the tree, You want to cut it down. We will all die, our hearts broken into little pieces.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.114

nirantara divāniśi āna nāhi jāni
svapaneha dekhom̐ tora cām̐damukhakhāni

Jayapatākā Swami: Constantly, day and night, we do not know anyone but You. Even in our dreams we see Your moonlike face.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.115

saṁsāra-vāsanā mora niyara nā haya
jagata-durlubha taba caraṇera bāya

Jayapatākā Swami: We don’t desire anything in this material world of birth and death. We want only the cool breeze from Your lotus feet, which are rare and difficult to find in this universe.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.116

tumi deśāntare yābe sabhāre eḍiẏā
khāiba saṁsāra-vyāghre sabhāre dhariyā

Jayapatākā Swami: If you leave and go to another country, leaving all of us, the tiger of material life will grab us and devour us.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.117

dayā kari nidāruṇa haile ki kāraṇe
ihā bali sabhe meli paḍiyā caraṇe

Jayapatākā Swami: Having shown us Your mercy, what is the reason, why You are becoming merciless? Having said this all the devotees present, fell down at Lord Gaurāṅga’s lotus feet.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.118

ohe dīnabandhu prabhu anāthera nātha
patita-tāraṇa ohe tumi jagannātha,

Jayapatākā Swami: O friend of the fallen, Lord Gaurāṅga, the protector of the unprotected! O deliverer of the fallen souls! O dear, You are the Lord of the Universe.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.119

keho dante tṛṇa dhari kātara vacane
keho urddhe bāhu tuli ḍāke ghaneghane

Jayapatākā Swami: One devotee took a straw in his teeth, and he spoke these plaintive words. Another devotee raised his arms and loudly called out.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 26.164-165

kākuti kariyā bale, mukunda mahāśaya
“yadi prabhu, e-mata se karibā niścaya

dina-katho ei-rūpe karaha kīrtana
tabe prabhu, karibā se ye tomāra mane”

Jayapatākā Swami: Mukunda Datta Mahāśaya, humbly said, my dear Lord Gaurāṅga, if You certainly do this, how many days will You do kīrtana in this way. For some days, please do Your kīrtana and then dear Lord, do whatever You want. We will end here today.

Conclusion: So, the devotees are feeling extreme separation, just at the thought of the Lord’s leaving. He hasn’t left yet. But He is saying that He will leave, and they are crushed. Just like when Rādhārāṇī would see Kṛṣṇa, She, couldn’t blink, because blinking would interfere with Her looking at Kṛṣṇa. So, the devotees of Navadvīpa, they couldn’t think of living without the association of Lord Caitanya. So, the final thing that Mukunda Datta said, “Well if You have to take sannyāsa, at least do kīrtana for a few more days, and then do as You must do.” So, the devotees were hankering, even for a little association with the Lord. So, this is a very intense moment, the devotees were having so much association with Lord Viśvambhara, and now, He is saying, He will go to some other country. So, it was like a bomb shell.

One question.

Question: Dear Gurudeva! Please accept my respectful obeisances. All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda! Guru Mahārāja, in His childhood pastime, Lord Caitanya once told His parents that He would not take sannyāsa. He would do gṛhastha dharma. Why now He is taking sannyāsa? Why the Lord is breaking His words? Is breaking words a part of His pastime?

Your servant,
Trilokinī Sakhī devī dāsī

Jayapatākā Swami: He did accept the gṛhastha dharma. He fulfilled His promise, even He married twice. First time, when He was in East Bengal or Bangladesh Lakṣmī-priyā left, then He married again Viṣṇu-priyā who is Bhūdevī. The reason why He is taking sannyāsa, was explained that He came to deliver the fallen. But instead the students wanted to beat Him. And just by thinking that, they are getting many obstacles. So, He wanted to deliver the fallen. But instead they are becoming more entangled. So therefore, He decided to take sannyāsa. But what this is doing to the devotees - putting them in extreme separation. Hare Kṛṣṇa!
