Introduction: So today we continue reading about Keśava Bhāratī Mahārāja visiting Navadvīpa dhāma. So, the chapter is entitled:

Keśava Bhāratī Arrives to Further Trigger the Lord's Desire to Take Sannyāsa

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.76

bhikṣā kari se-dina vaṣciyā nyāsibara
yathāsthāne prabhāte calilā yatīśbara

Jayapatākā Swami: So the sannyāsī Keśava Bhāratī Mahārāja, took his meal at the house of Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura, and stayed there till the night. In the morning, at the dawn of the next day, the king of the sannyāsīs, departed for his own places.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.77

prātaḥkāle śrīnivāsa prabhura nikaṭe
sannyāsi-vijaya-kathā kahe karapuṭe

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the next morning, Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura told Lord Caitanya, of the sannyāsī’s departure, with folded hands, and great respect.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.78

e bola śuniyā prabhu kātara-antara
sannyāsike mane kari gelā nijaghara

Jayapatākā Swami: When Lord Gaurāṅga heard these words, He became sorrowful at heart. Thinking about the sannyāsī, He walked to His home.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 10.79

ghare giyā mane mane anumāna kari
darhāilā-sannyāsa kariba gaurahari

Jayapatākā Swami: Returning home, Lord Gaura Hari contemplated within His mind, and decided to accept sannyāsa.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.1.

(tataḥ praviśaty ācārya-ratna-patnyānugamyamānā bhagavatī śacī)

Translation: (Bhagavatī Śacī enters, followed by Ācāryaratna's wife).

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.2

śacī: bahiṇie saṇṇāsiṇaṁ padi kathaṁ siribissambharassa edāriso āaro, vijādīabāsaṇo kkhu saṇṇāsī [bhagini! sannyāsinaṁ prati kathaṁ śrī-viśvambharasya etādṛśa ādaraḥ? vijātīya-vāsanaḥ khalu sannyāsī

Translation: Śacī: Bhaginī, why does Viśvambhara respect this sannyāsī in this way? Contrary (opposite of gṛhastha) is the desire of the sannyāsī.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.3

bhaginī: āaro kadhaṁ jāṇido?

[ādaraḥ kathaṁ jñātaḥ?]

Translation: Bhaginī: How is His respect for the sannyāsī known?

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.4

śacī: yado tattha diahe kesaba-bhāradī ṇāmassa kassa bi saṇṇāsiṇo bhicchatthaṁ saddhāluo hubia maṁ uttaraṁ saaṁ ca tasiṁ guruī bhattī aṇurāo bi paaḍido [yatas tatra divase keśava-bhāratī nāmnaḥ kasyāpi sannyāsino bhikṣārthaṁ śraddhālur bhūtvā mām uktavān | svayaṁ ca tasmin gurvī bhaktir anurāgo’pi prakaṭitaḥ

Translation: Śacī: The other day, being faithful He told me to give alms to a certain sannyāsī named Keśava Bhāratī. He Himself showed devotion and even attachment to that sannyāsī-guru.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.5

bhaginī: sobi bhatto hubissadibba
[so’pi bhakto bhaviṣyatīva |

Translation: Bhaginī: Even he will certainly be a devotee.

Saci: Even he will certainly be a devotee.”

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.6

śacī: kampedi me hiaaṁ saṇṇāsīṇām ametteṇa, assa aggaeṇāhaṁ paḍhāidā, tado imaṁ sandabbhaṁ tassa ṭhāṇe pucchissaṁ | [kampate me hṛdayaṁ sannyāsi-nāma-mātreṇa, asyāgrajenāhaṁ pāṭhitā, tata imaṁ sandarbhaṁ tasya sthāne prakṣyāmi |]

Translation: Śacī: Even the mere name of ‘sannyāsī’ makes my heart tremble. I have been taught by His (Viśvambhara’s) elder brother (i.e., Viśvarūpa). I will ask about this subject matter from Him.

Jayapatākā Swami: Since the elder brother of Viśvambhara had taken sannyāsa, so Śacī was always afraid that her younger son, Viśvambhara, would also take sannyāsa, and then she would be separated from His association.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.7

bhaginī: juttaṁ ṇṇedaṁ | [yuktam etat |]

Translation: Bhaginī: It is befitting.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.8

śacī: tā jāṇehi kudo so maha hiaāṇandaṇo candaṇa-ddumo | [taj jānīhi kutaḥ sa mama hṛdayānandanaś candana-drumaḥ |

Translation: Śacī: Let us know that. Where he, the sandal tree that delights my heart?

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.9

bhaginī (puro’valokya): dei! pekkha pekkha, aaṁ de puṇṇimā-cando bia pūbba disāe uggacchadi ṇandaṇo | [devi! paśya paśya, ayaṁ te pūrṇimā-candra iva pūrva-diśāyā udgacchati nandanaḥ |]

Translation: Bhaginī: (looking ahead) O noble lady, look! Look! Here is your son, rising in the east like a full moon.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.10

(śacī sa-spṛham ālokayati

(Śacī eagerly looks).

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.11

(tataḥ praviśati bhagavān viśvambharaḥ |)

(Lord Viśvambhara enters).

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.12

viśvambharaḥ (añjaliṁ baddhvā): amba, praṇamāmi |

Translation: Viśvambhara: (folding His hands) Mother, I offer My respectful obeisances.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.13

śacī (cirañjīveti mūrdhānam āghrāya): tāda! iaṁ ācāriaraaṇa-kalattaṁ, imaṁ paṇama | [tāta! iyaṁ ācārya-ratna-kalatraṁ, imāṁ praṇama |]

Translation: Śacī: “May You live long. (She smells His head). Son, this is Ācāryaratna's wife. You should offer respectful obeisances to her.”

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.14

(devas tathā karoti | sā sa-sādhvasaṁ saṅkucati |)

(The Lord does that. Timidly she is embarrassed).

Note: From this point on the speeches no longer identify Lord Caitanya as Viśvambhara. He is now called Deva.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.15

śacī: tāda! ekkaṁ pucchissaṁ | [tāta! ekaṁ prakṣyāmi]

Translation: Śacī: Dear son, I will ask about something.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.16

devaḥ: ājñāpaya |

Translation: Lord Gaurāṅga: Please order Me.

Lord Caitanya: Please order Me.”

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.17

śacī: puttaa! saṇṇāsiṇaṁ padi kadhaṁ de edāriso āaro, jaṁ tattha diahe kesaba-bhāradīṁ padi tādisī bhaktī kidā tumae? [putraka! sannyāsinaṁ prati kathaṁ te etādṛśa ādaraḥ, yat tasmin divase keśava-bhāratīṁ prati tādṛśī bhaktiḥ kṛtā tvayā?]

Translation: Śacī: Son, why are You so respectful to the sannyāsī? Because, the other day, You were very devoted to Keśava Bharatī.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.18

devaḥ: amba! te khalu parama-bhāgavatā bhavanti |

Translation: Lord Gaurāṅga: Mother, he is a great devotee of the Lord.

Lord Gaurāṅga: “Mother, he is a great devotee of the Lord.”

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.19

śacī: tattaṁ kadhehi, saṇṇāso bā kādabbo tumae? [tattvaṁ kathaya, sannyāso vā kartavyas tvayā?]

Translation: Śacī: Speak the truth. Are You going to take sannyāsa?

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.20

devaḥ (vihasya): amba! kuto’yaṁ te bhramaḥ? idam api bhavati kim?

Translation: Lord Gaurāṅga: (smiling) Mother, How is that you are bewildered like this? Can this ever happen?

Lord Gaurāṅga: (smiling) Mother, How is it that you are bewildered like this? Can this ever happen?”

Jayapatākā Swami: As I said, mother Śacī is always apprehensive that Viśvambhara will take sannyāsa, like His older brother Viśvarūpa. Lord Caitanya told His mother, why are you thinking like this? This is a transcendental pastime of the Lord, where He is planning to take sannyāsa, but He is saying, why are you bewildered like this?

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.21

śacī: baccha edeṇa jjeba de aggaeṇa diṇṇaṁ putthaaṁ mae pāa-samae cullī-majjhe dāuṇa jālidaṁ | [vatsa, etenaiva te agrajena dattaṁ pustakaṁ mayā pāka-samaye cullī-madhye dattvā jvālitam |]

Translation: Śacī: Child, for this reason only, while cooking I put the book given by Your elder brother (Viśvarūpa) into the fire and burned it.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.22

devaḥ: kiṁ pustakaṁ kathaṁ vā pradīpitam?

Translation: Lord Gaurāṅga: What book? Why did you burn it?

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.23

śacī: bissa-rūbeṇa me kadhidaṁ—amba! viśvambharo yadā vijño bhavati, tadā tasmai etat pustakaṁ deyam iti | mae dābadā jjeba taṁ rakkhidaṁ jāba so pabba[i]ido ṇa bhūdo | pabba[i]de tattha aaṁpi edaṁ puttaaṁ lambhia pabba[i]do hubissadi tti tuha saṇṇāsa-saṁkāe jālidaṁ | [viśvarūpena me kathitaṁ—amba! viśvambharo yadā vijño bhavati, tadā tasmai etat pustakaṁ deyam iti | mayā tāvatā evaitad rakṣitaṁ yāvatā sa pravrajito na bhūtaḥ | pravrajite tatra ayam api etat pustakaṁ labdhvā pravrajito bhaviṣyatīti tava sannyāsa-śaṅkayā jvālitam |

Translation: Śacī: Viśvarupa said to me, “Mother, when Viśvambhara becomes a learned scholar, give Him this book.” As long as He had not taken sannyāsa, I carefully protected the book. When He took sannyāsa, I burned the book for I was afraid You would also take sannyāsa after obtaining this book.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.24

devaḥ (kṣaṇam anutapya vihasya ca): amba! yadyapi saṁvid-rūpaiva bhavatī, tathāpi putra-vātsalyenedam ajñāna-vilasitam anuśīlitam |

Translation: Lord Gaurāṅga: (filled with regret for a moment and laughing) Mother, although you are the form of knowledge, love for your son made you manifest the action being bereft of knowledge.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.25

śacī: tāda! eso avarāho maha ṇa gahidabbo |

[tāta! ṣo’parādho mama na grahītavyaḥ |]

Translation: Śacī: Dear son, don't be offended with me.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.26

devaḥ: ko’parādho jananyāḥ putreṣu, kintu mamāparādho yadi bhavati, tadā kṣantavya evāsau mātṛ-caraṇair iti prasādaḥ kriyatām |

Translation: Lord Gaurāṅga: How can a mother be offensive towards the son? But, if I have offended, then I have to be forgiven by the lotus feet of mother (Śacī). Have mercy on me.

Jayapatākā Swami: In this Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka, we are having this special conversation between Śacī and her son.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.27

śacī: baccha! ṇa kahiṁ de abarāho mae gahidabbo, so tuha ṇatthi jjeba | [vatsa! na kutra te aparādho mayā grahītavyaḥ, sa tava nāsty eva |]

Translation: Śacī: My dear boy, I have not taken any of your offense. You have not committed any offense.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.28

devaḥ: amba! dināni katipayāni kutrāpi mama gantavyam asti | tvayā manasi khedo na kāryaḥ |

Translation: Lord Gaurāṅga: Mother, I have to somewhere else for some days. Please don't be unhappy at heart.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.29

śacī: kahiṁ gantabbaṁ? [kutra gantavyaṁ?]

Translation: Śacī: Where are You going?

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.30

devaḥ: amba! yena bhavatyāḥ sarveṣāṁ ca bandhūnāṁ sadā sukhāyaiva bhūyate | tad anusandhānaṁ kartum |

Translation: Lord Gaurāṅga: “Mother, I will search for yours, relatives and everyone’s constant happiness.”

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.31

śacī: taṁ kkhu tumuṁ jjeba (tat khalu tvameva)

Translation: Śacī: You indeed are that happiness.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.32

devaḥ: yadyapyevameva, tathāpi yena mamāpi śobhātiśayo bhavati, tadarthaṁ yatiṣyate

Translation: Lord Caitanya: Even though it is so, still I should try do this (bring you all ever happiness) so that even my beauty increases.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.33

śacī: baccha! jadhā maha dukkhaṁ ṇa hoi, tadhā karaṇijjaṁ | [vatsa! yathā mama duḥkhaṁ na bhavati, tathā karaṇīyam |]

Translation: Śacī: Son, You ought to do such that it doesn’t bring me sorrow.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.34

devaḥ: amba!

śrī-kṛṣṇaḥ paripālakas tava pitā mātā ca putro’pi ca
jñātiś ca draviṇaṁ ca nitya-sukhado bandhuś ca devo’pi ca
saṅgaḥ śāśvata eva yasya tam anusmṛtyāniśaṁ cetasā
sampannāsi tavādhunā sukhamayaṁ jānīhi dig-maṇḍalam

Translation: Lord Gaurāṅga: Mother, Śrī Kṛṣṇa is your protector, father, mother, son, relative, wealth, source of eternal happiness, friend and worshipable Deity. By constantly meditating on Kṛṣṇa perfectly in your heart, you are always under His shelter (which is liberating). Now, know that for you there is happiness everywhere.

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gaurāṅga is giving Kṛṣṇa conscious philosophy to His mother, Śacī. Of course, mother Śacī has Kṛṣṇa as her son. So that Kṛṣṇa, as Gaurāṅga, is instructing her to think of Kṛṣṇa. It is a unique situation.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.35

śacī: baccha! tumaṁ jjeba sabbaṁ, tuha pasādādo maha dukkhaṁ ṇatthi | kintu jadhā santataṁ tumaṁ pekkhāmi | taha jjeba kādabbaṁ | [vatsa! tvam eva sarvaṁ, tava prasādān mama duḥkhaṁ nāsti | kintu yathā santataṁ tvāṁ paśyāmi | tathaiva kartavyam |]

Translation: Śacī: My dear Son, (for me) You are everything. By Your kindness I have no sadness. Please do such that I will always see You.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.36

devaḥ: kṛṣṇa eva santataṁ tvayā draṣṭavyaḥ | sa eva tava sarva-duḥkha-dhvaṁsī bhaviṣyati |

Translation: Lord Caitanya: You should always see Kṛṣṇa. He will remove all your unhappiness.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 4.37

śacī: tahatthu, tā tumaṁ jjeba maha kaṇho, tā utthehi mahhaṇho jādo, tumaṁ pi siṇāṇa-puaṇādiaṁ kuṇha, ahampi pāatthaṁ jāmi | bahiṇie! tumam pi gharaṁ gacchehi, tuha bi bhaabado pāa-seā-samao jādo | [tathāstu, tat tvam eva me kṛṣṇaḥ, tasmād uttiṣṭha madhyāho jātaḥ, tvam api snāna-pūjanādikaṁ kuru, aham api pākārthaṁ yāmi | bhagini! tvam api gṛhaṁ gaccha, tavāpi bhagavataḥ pāka-sevā-samayo jātaḥ |

Translation: Śacī: So be it. Only You are my Kṛṣṇa. Please rise. It is now mid-day. You bath and do your worship and so on. Even I am going for cooking. Bhaginī, you should also go home. It is time for you to cook for the Lord.

(Exit all).

Jayapatākā Swami: So, since Ācāryaratna is the uncle of Lord Gaurāṅga, so His wife is His aunty. Therefore, He had to offer her respects. Now, you can see, how mother Śacī is completely dependent on devotional service, to Lord Viśvambhara. The thought of being deprived of His association is something inconceivable, unbearable for her. So, this is setting the stage prior to His taking sannyāsa.

Thus, ends the Chapter, Keśava Bhāratī Arrives to Further Trigger the Lord's Desire to Take Sannyāsa

Remember, write your name, city and country. Send your WhatsApp, first come, first served. What a rare opportunity! Send my name.

If you haven’t already called up, you are missing your chance. Any other questions today?

Acala Hari: Daṇḍavat praṇāmas Guru Mahārāja, because you made him repeat the third time slowly, I could stop washing the vessels and note down the number, only because of you!

Jayapatākā Swami: If anyone needs the WhatsApp number again, send it in the questions.

Question: O my dear spiritual father, please accept my respectful obeisances. All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda, What must a devotee, if he or she feels lonely? I feel very lonely Guru Mahārāja, at times, as I think I am very away from Kṛṣṇa and His devotees, especially from you Guru Mahārāja. I try to keep my mind busy with some other activities, but I cannot keep my mind focused. Please enlighten me, my spiritual father, I seek your blessings.

Your unqualified servant,
Kackuly Rāṇī devī dāsī.

Jayapatākā Swami: Well, if you are feeling separation, that is auspicious. If you are feeling materially lonely, that is illusion. So, I don’t know, by lonely you mean separation? We should try to think of Kṛṣṇa always and think of His pure devotees. That way we can be connected with the Lord, because thinking of the Lord is not different from being with the Lord. Since the Lord is the Absolute Truth, His name, His qualities, His remembrance, are all one.

Question: Hare Kṛṣṇa Guru Mahārāja, please accept my respectful obeisances. All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda, many naturo-therapies and Ayurveda recommend tulasī in their medicine, which has to be cut and boiled. Is it allowed Gurudeva?

Your spiritual daughter,
Pūrṇanandīnī Madhāvi devī dāsī.

Jayapatākā Swami: Since for us Tulasī is worshipable, so the Tulasī which comes from the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa, we can take that. I don’t know about boiling it.

Question: Dear Guru Mahārāja! Please accept my respectful obeisances. All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda. What is the way by which a practicing devotee can understand how close to or how far he is away from anartha -nivṛtti? How can one expedite his progress to anartha -nivṛtti? Are these stages distinct, or can there be some overlapping, i.e. can niṣṭhā start only after 100% completion of anartha-nivṛtti or can it start, say when anartha-nivṛtti has been 90% achieved?

Your insignificant servant,
Prema Gaurasundara dāsa.

Jayapatākā Swami: There may be a small amount of anartha, in the higher stages. To a large extent, the anarthas are overcome. Anarthas like, one moment we feel very enthusiastic, then next moment we feel down, depressed, not so much enthusiasm. That is called thick and thin – of one of the anarthas. So that when one reaches the stage of niṣṭhā, this variation would be very small. l and the person will be much more fixed up. I hope that it answers your question.

Question: Hare Kṛṣṇa Guru Mahārāja. PAMRO. I have two questions Guru Mahārāja. First question: What should be the attitude of a devotee while hearing the pastimes of Mahāprabhu?

Jayapatākā Swami: One time, Śrīla Prabhupāda was mentioning that, we may not be able to fully comprehend the pastimes of Lord Caitanya. But we should still listen, with an open mind. And then as one advances, will have greater realization of the pastime of Lord Gaurāṅga.

Second question: Sometimes if the Tulasī is big, I am unable to swallow it completely. What should we do because we cannot chew or break it? Please guide.

Your spiritual daughter,
Dīpapriyā Vrajeśvarī devī dāsī.

Jayapatākā Swami: This is a practical question. I don’t have this problem. Well, let me inquire what can be done. Please don’t choke on this tulasī! I would think that you can fold it, somehow if you are choking on it you have to chew it. I will inquire.

We heard many brahmacārīs, maybe because of change of weather, they are experiencing some fever, cold, so please chant once Hare Kṛṣṇa for them. Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare/ Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare.
