Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.095

straiṇa o madyapa nītiparāyaṇera vicāre nikṛṣṭa haileo vaiṣṇaba vidveṣī vedāntī apekṣā bhagabānera adhika kṛpāpātra —

straiṇa-madyapere prabhu anugraha kare
nindaka vedāntī yadi, tathāpi saṁhāre

Translation: The Lord bestowed mercy on womanizers and drunkards, but He annihilates blasphemers even if they are well-versed in Vedānta.

Ordinary people who are intoxicated by material enjoyment and who follow worldly morality give more respect to impersonalists than to drunkards and womanizers, but the supremely independent Lord, who is most merciful to the living entities, does not approve of their consideration, which is born of external perception. Realizing that the conception of the Vedāntists who are averse to the Vaiṣṇavas is completely opposed to devotional service, He refutes it. And He displays compassion on the weak, the womanizers, and the drunkards according to their respective qualifications.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the Lord showed His mercy on womanizers and drunkards. But He annihilates the blasphemers, even if they now the Vedānta. This goes down to the basis of what is the difference between sinful reactions and offences. Womanizers, drunkards and those addicted to sinful activities, they can be easily forgiven by the mercy of Kṛṣṇa. But those blaspheme the Vaiṣṇavas, those who are against devotional service, they are very offensive and They more difficult to deliver.  So, Lord Caitanya would show His mercy to the fallen materialists, but those who were against devotional service and blasphemers of the Vaiṣṇavas, those who are impersonalists, criticizers of the Supreme person, for this offence, it would be hard for them to get delivered. So, the Lord shows His compassion to the weak and the fallen. But to those who are against devotional service or offend the Vaiṣṇavas, He would treat them very strongly. He would not spare them.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.096

saṅgera tāratamya-pradarśanakalpe dārī sannyāsīke gaurasundarera kṛpāpūrvaka māyāvādīra saṅga varjana śikṣāpradāna —

nyāsī haiyā madya piye, strī-saṅga ācare
tathāpi ṭhākura gelā tāhāra mandire

Translation: Although this sannyāsī drank wine and intimately associated with women, the Lord visited his house.

People who enjoy other's wives and drink wine are not accepted as pious in this world. No one goes to the house of a sinful person to associate with him. Śrī Gaura-Nityānanda bestowed mercy on even this dārī sannyāsī to reveal that in a comparison of various kinds of association the association of Māyāvādīs is more abominable and undesirable than the association of drunkards. But They revealed that the association of the Māyāvādī Vedāntists of Kāśī was even more undesirable. The licentious drunkards are only sinful, but the Māyāvādīs are envious of the Supreme Lord and His devotees, therefore they are eternally offenders. Sins are exhaustible, but imperishable sins like spiritual suicide resulting from offense do not allow one to give up his false identification. As a result of offenses, the eternal good fortune and supreme auspiciousness of living entities are destroyed forever. When piety is accumulated, sinful reactions are destroyed. But the result of offenses is more inauspicious than sin in all respects.

Jayapatākā Swami: Although this dārī sannyāsī, he drank wine and intimately associated with women, in spite of that the Lord, He visited his house. So, this dārī sannyāsī - normally a sannyāsī is someone who takes a vow of lifelong celibacy - but, this type of dārī sannyāsī had a wife, which is a contradiction. So normally, this kind of person, would not be accepted by society as a moral person. Normally, if someone is not pious, then a brāhmaṇa will not visit their house. But Gaura and Nitāi bestowed Their mercy on this fallen sannyāsī. They were showing that associating with this type of sinful person was better than associating with the Māyāvādīs. The drunkards are sinful, but the Māyāvādī renunciants, they are envious of the Supreme Lord and His devotees. Therefore, they are eternally offenders. Sins are easily exhaustible, but a spiritual offence is more difficult, because it puts one in a false identification. So, by this offence, one’s good fortune and auspiciousness as a living entity, is destroyed forever. So, by certain pious activities, sins are destroyed. But, the result of offences, are more inauspicious than sin in all respects.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.097

vākyāvākya kailā prabhu, śikhāila dharma
viśrāma kariyā kailā bhojanera karma

Translation: In the course of their conversation, the Lord taught him religious principles. He took rest in his house and ate there.

Jayapatākā Swami: When the Lord engaged in His discussions, He taught the essence of religious principles. He rested in his house and He ate there. That way He gave a lot of association to the dārī sannyāsī. So, this dārī sannyāsī got so much spiritual blessings.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.098

nā haya e janme bhāla, haiba āra janme
sabe nindakere nāhi vāse bhāla-marme

Translation: Even if the sannyāsī could not attain perfection in this life, he would in the next. But the blasphemers will never achieve perfection.

Jayapatākā Swami: Even if this dārī sannyāsī cannot achieve perfection in this life, but he can achieve perfection in the next life. But the blasphemers, will never achieve perfection.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.099

dekhā nāhi pāya yata abhakta sannyāsī
tāra sākṣī yateka sannyāsī kāśī-vāsī

Translation: That is why nondevotee sannyāsīs cannot see the Lord. The sannyāsīs of Kāśī are evidence of this.

Jayapatākā Swami: That is why all the non-devotee sannyāsīs cannot see the Lord. The evidence of that is the sannyāsīs of Kāśī.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.100

kāśīvāsī sannyāsigaṇera prabhu-āgamana-samvāda śravaṇe gaura darśana-prāpti-āśā evaṃ bhakti upekṣāhetu nairāśya —

śeṣa-khaṇḍa yakhane calilā prabhu kāśī
śunileka kāśī-vāsī yateka sannyāsī

Translation: As described in the Antya-khaṇḍa, when the Lord went to Kāśī, all the sannyāsīs there heard about His arrival.

Jayapatākā Swami: In the Antya-līlā, when the Lord went to Kāśī, Banaras, all the sannyāsīs who were residing in Kāśī, they heard about the Lord’s arrival.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.101

śuniyā ānanda haila sannyāsīra gaṇa
`dekhiba caitanya', baḍa śuni mahājana

Translation: Those sannyāsīs became happy to hear about the arrival of that great personality and thought, “We will see Caitanya.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing about the arrival of the Lord, the sannyāsīs became very happy. They thought “we will see Lord Caitanya! We have heard that He is a great personality.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.102

sabei vedāntī-jñānī, sabei tapasvī
ājanma kāśīte vāsa, sabei yaśasvī

Translation: They were all conversant with Vedānta and practiced at austerities. They had lived their entire lives in Kāśī and were greatly renowned.

Jayapatākā Swami: All of them were conversant with the Vedānta-sūtra and they practiced many austerities. From their birth they were staying in Kāśī. And all of them were greatly renowned.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.103

eka doṣe sakala guṇera gela śakti
paḍāya vedānta, nā vākhāne viṣṇu-bhakti

Translation: Yet all their good qualities were nullified by one fault—they taught Vedānta but did not explain devotional service to Viṣṇu.

Persons inclined to Lord Viṣṇu's devotional service, which negates the philosophy of impersonalism, are pure followers of Vedānta. Māyāvādīs are pseudo followers of Vedānta. Therefore, since they regard the illusory energy of the Lord and the Absolute Truth to be on the same level, such faulty persons become offenders at the feet of the eternal Lord and His devotees. All good qualities abandon the Māyāvādīs and destroy their constitutional propensity of devotional service to Viṣṇu.

Jayapatākā Swami: One fault which destroyed all their good qualities., they taught Vedānta, but they did not explain devotional service to Viṣṇu. These jñānīs are not the real followers of Vedānta. Persons who are inclined to devotional service to Viṣṇu, which is against the philosophy of impersonalism, are pure followers of Vedānta. Why they are called Māyāvādīs is because, they say that the illusory energy has covered the eyes of the conditioned souls. But if this illusion is removed, then the souls will realize that they are in fact God! So, in this way, if the illusory energy would cover up the eyes of God, then they are putting illusory energy at an equal or greater position, than the Supreme Personality of Godhead, that is why they are called Māyāvādīs. And they are committing an offence to Kṛṣṇa and His devotees. So, for this offence, it is normally very hard to achieve devotional service. So, devotees should abandon the association of Māyāvādīs, as they destroy one’s constitutional propensity of serving the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Viṣṇu.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.104

antaryāmī gaurasiṁha ihā saba jāne
giyā o kāśīte nā dilā daraśane

Translation: The lionlike Gaura, the Supersoul of all, knows everything. Although He went to Kāśī, He did not give darśana to those sannyāsīs.

Jayapatākā Swami: The lionlike Gaura, is the Supersoul of everyone. Although He went to Kāśī, He did not give His darśana to the sannyāsīs. He did not give audience to the sannyāsīs.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.105

rāmacandra-purīra maṭhete lukāi
yārahilena dui māsa vārāṇasī giyā

Translation: While in Vārāṇasī He hid in Rāmacandra Purī's āśrama, where He stayed for two months.

Śrī Gaurasundara stayed at Candraśekhara's house in Vārāṇasī. By profession, the śūdra Candraśekhara was a doctor. Ṭhākura Vṛndāvana, the author of Śrī Caitanya-bhāgavata, understood that Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu secretly stayed at the āśrama of Rāmacandra Purī. Rāmacandra Purī was a pseudo-disciple of Mādhavendra Purī. He had a strong inclination for Māyāvāda philosophy. The Lord openly declared that He stayed in the āśrama of Rāmacandra Purī, whereas He actually stayed elsewhere in the association of Kṛṣṇa's devotees. Rāmacandra Purī was a sectarian sannyāsī, therefore the general public could not criticize the Lord, as a sannyāsī, for staying at his āśrama.

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya stayed in the āśrama of Rāmacandra Purī. He stayed there for two months. So, since Rāmacandra Purī was acceptable to the general public, Lord Caitanya said that He stayed in his āśrama, but actually He associated with the Kṛṣṇa devotees. So Candraśekhara was a devotee, but he was a sūdra. As a profession, he was a doctor at that time. So, the Lord, He frequently stayed with Candraśekhara, but Vṛndāvanadāsa Ṭhākura, the author of Caitanya Bhāgavata, thought that Lord Caitanya stayed secretly in the āśrama of Rāmacandra Purī. Rāmacandra Purī was a pseudo disciple of Mādhavendra Purī. He had a strong attraction for the Māyāvādī philosophy. So, Lord Caitanya declared, He stayed at the ashrama of Rāmacandra Purī, but He actually stayed with devotees.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.106

viśvarūpa-kṣaurera divasa dui āche
lukāiyā calilā, dekhaye keha pāche

Translation: Two days before the observance of Viśvarūpa-kṣaura, the Lord departed secretly, so that He would not be seen by others.

The phrase viśvarūpa-kṣaura is explained as follows: The ekadaṇḍi-sannyāsīs shave their heads on the full moon day of every second month. The observance of shaving that takes place at the middle of Cāturmāsya, after the first two months, is called “Viśvarūpa-kṣaura.” According to the regulations for Cāturmāsya, enjoyment like shaving the head is prohibited. But in the course of observing the vow of shaving the head every two months, there is a special allowance for ekadaṇḍi-sannyāsīs to shave their heads on the full moon day that falls in the month of Śrāvaṇa or Bhādra. This does not break their observance of Cāturmāsya. After the observance of Viśvarūpa-kṣaura, rituals like worshiping the spiritual master and recitation of the viśva-rūpa chapter of Bhagavad-gītā are prescribed. On the thirteenth day of the waxing moon Mahāprabhu left Kāśī in secret, unseen by ordinary people. The sannyāsīs of Kāśī knew that on the day of Viśvarūpa-kṣaura they would get the darśana of Śrī Caitanyadeva. The sannyāsīs thought that Śrī Caitanyadeva was a Māyāvādī sannyāsī like themselves, so when they came to know that Mahāprabhu had secretly left, even on the day of Viśvarūpa-kṣaura, they merged in an ocean of disappointment.

Jayapatākā Swami: So Sanātana Gosvāmī’s appearance day is the day, when they observe it as Guru Pūrṇimā. That day the sannyāsīs are allowed to shave up. Usually, in the four months of the rainy season, one doesn’t shave. But on the Viśvarūpa-kṣaura day they could shave. So, that is in the middle of the Cāturmāsya. So, Lord Caitanya secretly arrived at that time, two days before this. Then He secretly left, so that He could not be seen by others. So, they had considered that since Lord Caitanya had taken sannyāsa from Keśava Bhārati, He was one of them, He was a Māyāvādī sannyāsī. So, they were expecting to see Him. But He left secretly on the day of Viśvarūpa-kṣaura. So, they were very, very, disappointed.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.107

pāche śunilena saba sannyāsīra gaṇa
calilena caitanya, nahila daraśana

Translation: Later, the sannyāsīs heard that Lord Caitanya had left, so they would not be able to see Him.

Jayapatākā Swami: Later, the sannyāsīs heard that Lord Caitanya had left, and they will not be able to meet Him.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.108

mahāprabhura prasthāne māyābādigaṇera jalpanā

sarva-buddhi harileka eka nindā-pāpa
pāche o kāhāra citte nā janmila tāpa

Translation: All their intelligence was stolen away simply because of their indulgence in the sin of blasphemy. Yet even after His departure they did not feel remorse.

Jayapatākā Swami: Because of their offence of blaspheming the Lord and His devotees, all their intelligence was stolen away. Even after the Lord left, they didn’t feel any remorse.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.109

āro bale,—“āmarā sakala pūrvāś
ramīāmā sabā' sambhāṣiyā vinā gelā kenī?

Translation: They said, “We all have a common lineage, so why did He leave without speaking to us?

Jayapatākā Swami: In fact, they said, we are all having the similar paramparā connection. Why did He leave without speaking to us?

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.110

dui dina lāgi' kene svadharma chāḍiyā
kene gelā `viśvarūpa-kṣaura' laṅghiyā?”

Translation: “Why did He forsake His religious duties by leaving two days before Viśvarūpa-kṣaura?”

Jayapatākā Swami: Why did He leave His religious duties? By leaving two days before the Viśvarūpa-kṣaura ceremony?

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.111

kṛṣṇa-bhakti-hīna nindaka kāśīpati mahādevera daṇḍya —

bhakti-hīna haile e-mata buddhi haya
nindakera pūjāśiva kabhu nāhi laya

Translation: If one is devoid of devotional service, this type of mentality develops. Lord Śiva never accepts the worship of a blasphemer.

Since living entities who have not awakened to devotional service, which is the eternal propensity of the soul, are attached to the performance of ritualistic activities like Viśvarūpa-kṣaura, they cannot understand the sweetness of the devotional service preached by Śrī Caitanyadeva. Sadāśiva, the Lord of Kāśī, never accepts the worship of those who blaspheme Vaiṣṇavas.

Jayapatākā Swami: So those who are the blasphemers, they are devoid of devotional service. They develop this type of mentality. Lord Śiva, He never accepts the worship of these blasphemers. The blasphemers, the Māyāvādīs, they cannot understand the sweetness of devotional service. They are very attached to the ritualistic ceremonies like Viśvarūpa-kṣaura. And they cannot understand the nectar preached by Lord Caitanyadeva. So Sadāśiva, the Lord Kāśī, who is the greatest of all the Vaiṣṇavas, He never accepts worship from those who blaspheme Vaiṣṇavas.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.112

kāśīte ye para ninde, se śivera daṇḍya
śiva-aparādhe viṣṇu nahe tāra vandya

Translation: Those who blaspheme others in Kāśī are punished by Lord Śiva, and those who offend Śiva cannot become devotees of Viṣṇu.

Mahādeva, the proprietor of Kāśī, punishes the residents of Kāśī who blaspheme the Supreme Lord. The topmost Vaiṣṇava Mahādeva punishes such condemned living entities for their offenses against the Vaiṣṇavas and makes them bereft of devotion to Viṣṇu.

Jayapatākā Swami: And those who criticize others in Kāśī are punished by Lord Śiva. Those who offend Lord Śiva can never become devotees of Lord Viṣṇu.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.113

gaurasundarera vaiṣṇavanindaka vyatīta sakalake kṛpā

sabāra kariba gaurasundara uddhāra
vyatirikta vaiṣṇava-nindaka durācāra

Translation: Lord Gaurasundara delivers everyone except the sinful people who blaspheme Vaiṣṇavas.

Śrī Gaurasundara's preaching of devotional service is meant to deliver everyone in the world, but Mahāprabhu did not display any compassion for delivering the sinful Māyāvādīs who indulge in blaspheming Vaiṣṇavas. Rather, He enacted the pastime of accepting the hospitality of a drunken debauchee. Yet He did not award the Māyāvādī Vedāntists who were envious of Vaiṣṇavas the good fortune of attaining His darśana.

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya delivers even the most sinful persons, except those who blaspheme the Vaiṣṇava. Someone said, that when Śrīla Prabhupāda went to the West, there were no Vaiṣṇavas. So therefore, there was no Vaiṣṇava blasphemy. So, all the fallen people, he delivered them very easily. But after the devotees were there for some time, people started criticizing them, so therefore it is harder to get the mercy of Lord Caitanya. We should be very careful not to offend the Vaiṣṇavas, not to offend devotional service to the Lord. So, although this pastime happened when Lord Caitanya was still a gṛhastha, when He visited the house of the dārī sannyāsī, who was a drunkard, being a so called sannyāsī, having a wife, he had many faults. But he wasn’t a blasphemer of devotees, he was just sinful. So, he got the mercy of Lord Caitanya. But normally, Lord Caitanya avoided the Māyāvādīs and offenders of Vaiṣṇavas. So, that is why in the middle of this pastime of the Lord as a gṛhastha, going to the house of Advaita Gosvāmī, that example is given of Lord Caitanya, when He was a sannyāsī, visiting Kaśī, Banaras. There He avoided the Māyāvādī sannyāsīs. So, after the example is given to show how He gave His mercy to a fallen sannyāsī, but He did not award His mercy to the offending Vaiṣṇava sannyāsīs.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.114

madyapera ghare kailā snāna (se) bhojana
nindaka vedāntī nā pāila daraśana

Translation: He took bath and ate at the house of a drunkard, but the blasphemous Vedāntists could not get His darśana.

Jayapatākā Swami: He took His Ganges bath in the house of the drunkard sannyāsī. He ate. But the blasphemous Vedānti sannyāsīs could not get His audience.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.115

caitanyadaṇḍe āśaṅkāhīna vyakti yamadaṇḍa —

caitanyera daṇḍe yā'ra citte nāhi bhaya
janme janme sei jīva yama-daṇḍya haya

Translation: A living entity who does not fear Lord Caitanya's punishment is punished by Yamarāja, birth after birth.

Śrī Caitanyadeva punished the Māyāvādī Vedāntists by adopting the principle of noncooperation with them. Those who are not afraid of such severe punishment are sufficiently punished in every life by Yamarāja. All demigods are servants of the Supreme Lord; they constantly engage in glorifying topics of the Supreme Lord. People who are averse to the service of the demigods and brāhmaṇas can never become attached to the lotus feet of Śrī Gaurasundara. If one does not have intense attachment for the lotus feet of Śrī Caitanya, then useless inclination towards impersonalism is completely futile. Activities like studying Māyāvāda Vedānta, becoming devoid of devotion to Viṣṇu, and renouncing material enjoyment are all useless and futile for people who are bereft of Śrī Mahāprabhu's service.

Jayapatākā Swami: A living entity who does not feel fear about Lord Caitanya’s punishment, he gets punished by Yamarāja, birth after birth. Lord Caitanya gave the Māyāvādī sannyāsīs a punishment, by not cooperating with them. Those who are not afraid of such severe punishment by the Lord, are punished implicitly by Yamarāja. The devas, the demigods and brāhmaṇas, always glorify the Supreme Lord. Those who are averse to this service, they can no more become attached to the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya. Being attached to the impersonal Māyāvādī philosophy, which is devoid of devotional service to Lord Viṣṇu, even though they are engaged in renunciation, they are all useless, if they are bereft of Sri Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s service.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 19.116-117

aja-bhavādi-stuta gaurasundare ratihīna vedāntikera sannyāsādira naiṣphalya

aja, bhava, ananta, kamalā sarva-mātā
sabāra śrī-mukhe nirantara yāṅra kathā

hena gauracandra-yaśe yāra nahe rati
vyartha tā'ra sannyāsa, vedānta-pāṭhe mati

Translation: The acceptance of sannyāsa and the study of Vedānta of one who has no attachment for the glorification of Śrī Gauracandra, who is constantly praised by Brahmā, Śiva, Ananta, and Kamalā, the mother of all, is useless.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva, Anantadeva, Lakṣmī, the mother of everyone, are constantly discussing the glories of the Lord. Those who are not attached to the glories of Lord Caitanya, their acceptance of sannyāsa, their study of Vedānta is completely useless.

So, this chapter tells us how being fallen, we could still get the mercy of Lord Caitanya, and how blaspheming a devotee, would deprive you of the mercy of Lord Caitanya. Lord Caitanya, He gave Cāpāla Gopāla, Devānanda Paṇḍita, mercy, only when they begged forgiveness from the vaisnava they had offended. So, it is very important that we should very careful not to offend any vaisnavas. Hare Kṛṣṇa!

Question: Bengali: Gurudeva! Praṇāma! In the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam it says, naṣṭa-prāyeṣv abhadreṣu. What does prāyeṣu mean?

Jayapatākā Swami: Simply by hearing the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, one almost cleanses the heart from all the contaminations. We should also render devotional service. We should also chant the holy names. Lord Caitanya said, `bala kṛṣṇa, bhaja kṛṣṇa, kara kṛṣṇa-sikṣā'. So the kara kṛṣṇa-sikṣā, is the study of the Gītā and Bhāgavatam. So by studying the Bhāgavatam, one almost purifies the heart from all the contaminations, but we should also chant Hare Kṛṣṇa and offer our service to Lord Kṛṣṇa. Then we will destroy all the contaminations.

Question – Tamil: Śrī Umāśaṅkarī: Hare Kṛṣṇa Guru Mahārāja! (Guru Mahārāja said: HAREEEE KṚṢṆA!) How to rectify the six kleśas and offences? Because I want pure chanting. Please, my humble request, please answer me. Hare Krsna!

Jayapatākā Swami: What is six kleśas? Anyway, as far as to be forgiven for any offence, Mother Śacī had offended Advaita Gosāñi. So Lord Caitanya said, you should be forgiven by Advaita. But when she went to Advaita Gosvāmī and begged for forgiveness, He was glorifying mother Śacī, saying how can I be offended by her! And He fainted ecstatic over singing the glories so Mother Śacī. Then Lord Caitanya said, He is not going to forgive you. He is not accepting that He was offended. So you take the dust from His feet, you will be forgiven for your offence. So she took the dust from Advaita’s lotus feet and then she put it on her head, and thus she was forgiven. So, we have this example. To get forgiven, take the dust from the lotus feet of whom you have offended, otherwise, constantly chant Hare Kṛṣṇa and repent. But that will take you a longer time.
