Vidvān Gaurāṅga dāsa: Jagannātha Miśra in a dream… because Jagannātha Miśra is trying to discipline Nimāi. So, we have sections from Locana dāsa Ṭhākura – Caitanya-maṅgala, we have Caitanya-caritāmṛta also. In Caitanya-caritāmṛta it comes under Balya-līlā, but others they have put it under paugaṇḍa-līlā. Murāri Gupta’s Kaḍca also has it, and Kavikarṇapura’s Mahā-kāvya also has it. So, first we will start with Caitanya-caritāmṛta.

Jayapatākā Swami: We used to give preference to Caitanya-caritāmṛta for chronology.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga dāsa: Okay! So, I will read out Caitanya-caritāmṛta first, then Deva Gaurāṅga Prabhu will read out Caitanya-maṅgala. This is a long section in Caitanya-maṅgala. In Caitanya-caritāmṛta, This is Ādi-līlā Chapter 14 text 83-92.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 14.83

eka-dina miśra putrera cāpalya dekhiyā
dharma-śikṣā dila bahu bhartsanā kariyā

Translation: On another occasion, Jagannātha Miśra, seeing the mischievous acts of his son, gave Him lessons in morality after rebuking Him greatly.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 14.84

rātre svapna dekhe, — eka āsi’ brāhmaṇa
miśrere kahaye kichu sa-roṣa vacana

Translation: On that very night, Jagannātha Miśra dreamt that a brāhmaṇa had come before him speaking these words in great anger:

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 14.85

“miśra, tumi putrera tattva kichui nā jāna
bhartsana-tāḍana kara, — putra kari’ māna”

Translation: “My dear Miśra, you do not know anything about your son. You think Him your son, and therefore you rebuke and chastise Him.”

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 14.86

miśra kahe, — deva, siddha, muni kene naya
ye se baḍa ha-uk mātra āmāra tanaya

Translation: Jagannātha Miśra replied, “This boy may be a demigod, a mystic yogī or a great saintly person. It doesn’t matter what He is, for I think He is only my son.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 14.87

putrera lālana-śikṣā — pitāra sva-dharma
āmi nā śikhāle kaiche janibe dharma-marma

Translation: “It is the duty of a father to educate his son in both religion and morality. If I do not give Him this education, how will He know of it?”

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 14.88

vipra kahe, — putra yadi daiva-siddha haya
svataḥ-siddha-jñāna, tabe śikṣā vyartha haya

Translation: The brāhmaṇa replied, “If your son is a transcendental mystic boy with self-effulgent perfect knowledge, what is the use of your education?”

Purport: The brāhmaṇa Jagannātha Miśra saw in his dream told him that his son was not an ordinary human being. If He were a transcendental person, He would have self-effulgent knowledge, and thus there would be no need to educate Him.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 14.89

miśra kahe, — “putra kene nahe nārāyaṇa
tathāpi pitāra dharma — putrera śikṣaṇa”

Translation: Jagannātha Miśra replied, “Even if my son is not a common man but Nārāyaṇa, still it is the duty of a father to instruct his son.”

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 14.90

ei-mate duṅhe karena dharmera vicāra
viśuddha-vātsalya miśrera, nāhi jāne āra

Translation: In this way Jagannātha Miśra and the brāhmaṇa discussed the principles of religion in the dream, yet Jagannātha Miśra was absorbed in unalloyed parental mellow and did not want to know anything else.

Purport: In Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (10.8.45) it is said, “Lord Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is worshiped with exalted hymns by all the Vedas and Upaniṣads and by great personalities through sāṅkhya-yoga in the mode of goodness, was considered by mother Yaśodā and Nanda to be their own little son.” Similarly, Jagannātha Miśra also considered Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu his beloved little boy, although He is worshiped with all veneration by learned brāhmaṇas and saintly persons.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 14.91

eta śuni’ dvija gelā hañā ānandita
miśra jāgiyā ha-ilā parama vismita

Translation: Being very pleased, the brāhmaṇa left after talking with Jagannātha Miśra, and when Jagannātha Miśra awakened from his dream, he was very much astonished.

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 14.92

bandhu-bāndhava-sthāne svapna kahili
śuniyā sakala loka vismita ha-ila

Translation: He related the dream to his friends and relatives, and every one of them was very much astonished to hear of it.

That is Caitanya-caritāmṛta. Then we have Locana dāsa Ṭhākura about this same pastime.

Deva Gaurāṅga dāsa:

Caitanya-maṅgala, Ādi 3.473-474

āra ekadine gaṅgā-bālukāra taṭe
bālaka sahite krīḍā kare gaṅgāghāṭe

bālukāya pakṣigaṇa-pada anusāri
gamana karilā pakṣi-padacihna dhari

Vidvān Gaurāṅga dāsa: We are just trying to locate it.

Jayapatākā Swami: Actually… this hair-cutting and ear piercing (time) He was playing with the kids. So, that means that hair cutting, and ear piercing was the beginning of the paugaṇḍa-līlā. This is the end of the bālya-līlā.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga dāsa: So this is an interface…

Jayapatākā Swami: Ah!

Vidvān Gaurāṅga dāsa: This is an overlap. It appears to be an overlap – bālya-līlā and paugaṇḍa-līlā. Okay, let him just resume.

sei jana khelā jine kāndhe caḍe tāra

kare dhari laña āila āpana kumāra

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya went to His mother’s lap side and He said, “I won’t play anymore! I won’t play anymore.”

Vidvān Gaurāṅga dāsa: I also have Subhāg Mahārāja’s English translation of Caitanya-maṅgala… (not clear)

Caitanya-maṅgala, Ādi 3.492-494

jagannāthe pāche kari putra āgoriyā
māriha putra māera maila ḍarāiyā

Vidvān Gaurāṅga dāsa: If you study nicely, people will talk good about You and I will give You bananas.

Jayapatākā Swami: Kadalaka?

Vidvān Gaurāṅga dāsa: Kadalaka means khola, it is a Sanskrit word for Banana.

Deva Gaurāṅga dāsa:

Caitanya-maṅgala, Ādi 3.501-507

eimate ānande-sānande dina gelā
sandhyā samādhiyā miśra śayana karilā

nidrāgata haila -rātri tṛtīya prahara
svapana dekhiyā miśra hailā phāṅpara

Vidvān Gaurāṅga dāsa: I’ll read out Śubhāg Mahārāja’s version… whole translation missing…

“One day Nimāi was playing with his friends at the bathing ghat outside the Ganges, they invented a game of counting the footprints left in the sand by the birds, whoever could count all the prints and reach the river’s edge first one if someone missed a footprint, he would be disqualified the losing party would carry the winner on his shoulder quickly the boys ran as fast as they could, Viśvambhara perspire profusely from playing so hard, the beads of sweat on Viśvambhara’s golden body looked like drops of honey oozing out of a golden lotus flower. He felt embarrassed when His father came to take Him home. The other boys also returned to their homes. After Viśvambhara finished bathing His father reprimanded Him. Jagannātha Miśra said, “You have let Your studies go to the dogs like a low-class boy even though You are the son of a brāhmaṇa, You don’t know how to properly behave; now I’ll teach You a lesson.” Catching His hand Jagannātha threatened to beat Nimāi Paṇḍita with a stick. Śacīmātā intervened, “Wait! Don’t beat my son! He won’t play anymore but He’ll sit with you and study the śāstras”. Viśvambhara ran out to Śacīmātā and jumped in her lap. He said softly, “I won’t play, I won’t play!” Protecting her son Śacīmātā sternly said, “Prabhu! Don’t beat my son! He’s dying in fear of you.” Then Śacīmātā using the edge of her sārī affectionately wiped the tears from Nimāi’s face. Śacī said to her husband, “Let Him give up His studies and become a fool; I just want Him to live up to a hundred years.” Getting angry Jagannātha Miśra replied, “If your son becomes illiterate how will he maintain Himself? Which brāhmaṇa will give his daughter to Him in marriage?” Viśvambhara looked fearfully at His father. Jagannātha Miśra’s heart was burning inside but outwardly he kept a peaceful composure. His fatherly affection rose within his heart, tears moistening Jagannātha Miśra’s eyes, he threw away the stick, taking Nimāi and sitting Him on his lap, he said in a sweet voice, “Listen my son! If you study nicely the people will praise You and I’ll give You bananas!” Gradually the day faded into evening. That night, Jagannātha Miśra had an amazing dream. The next day he felt perplexed about the dream and told his friends about it. Jagannātha said, “Last night, I saw a well-built brāhmaṇa with an effulgence as bright as a sun. The dazzling jewels and ornaments decorating his body made it impossible to look at him. In a voice thundering like a cloud that brāhmaṇa said, “Why do you think that Viśvambhara is your son? You don’t know that I’m the Supreme Personality of Godhead? And animals can’t understand the potency of a touch stone. How dare you look upon me as your son? I know all the scriptures and I’m the guru of the demigods. Why did you take stick in your hand to beat me?” So, you can understand from the dream why I feel perplexed. I have no idea what it means.” Śacī devī and the other looked at the face of Viśvambhara and became very joyful. Placing Viśvambhara on their laps Jagannātha Miśra and Śacīmātā addressed their friends, “The greatness of our son Gaura Hari is beyond the reach of the Vedas. He’s beyond the power of Śiva, Sanaka and the other Ṛṣis. Our son Gaurāṅga is such a glorious personality.” While saying this the sweet mood of parental love overwhelmed Śacī devī and Jagannātha. This removed any trace of aiśvarya-bhāva – the formal mood of awe and reverence. Everyone became ecstatic upon hearing Jagannātha Miśra’s dream. Locana dāsa happily sings of the glories of Gaurāṅga!

So that is Caitanya-maṅgala. Then we have Murāri Gupta’s kaḍaca, which is here, which has been translated into Bengali.

Jayapatākā Swami: It’s translated into Bengali? It’s good?

Vidvān Gaurāṅga dāsa: It’s okay! It’s not… It’s also difficult to mistranslate from Sanskrit to Hindi or Bengali. We have a Hindi translation also, but Bengali would be easy for you to follow.

Deva Gaurāṅga dāsa:

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 1.7.12-17

Ini pitṛsevane āsaktacitta haīyāo pāṭhābhyāsa karitena, bālakagaṇa saha khelā karitena. kakhanao vayasyagaṇa saha krīḍā karite karite dhūlidhūsarāṅga haīyāchena, kṣudhita haīyāo bhojanera janya manoyoga karitena nā. (12)

Ekadina pitā haṅhāke svatantra (avādhya) dekhiyā, hitābhilāṣī haīyā bhatrsanā karite lāgilena—‘lekhāpaḍā saba chāḍiyā tumi sadākāla bālakagaṇe parivṛta thāka evaṁ kṣudhita haīyāo krīḍā karitecha?’ (13)

Tatpare rajanīyoge śayanaśeṣe svapne konao dvijavaryyacūḍāmaṇi tāṅhāke nindā kariyā balilena,—‘tumi putrake bahu sammāna kara nā kena he? athavā paśu ki kakhanao sparśamaṇira ādara karite jāne? (14)

Kimbā ai paśu yadi ratnajaḍita bastra dvārā āvṛtagātrao haya, tathāpi ki se ai bastrakhānāke carvaṇa kare nā?’ takhana tāṅhāke miśracandra svayaṁ akutobhaye balilena,—‘āmāra putra yadi nārāyaṇao haya, tathāpi tāhāra tāḍanā karāi āmāra dharma.’ brāhmaṇa ei kathā śuniyā tāṅhāke sādhubāda dāna karilena. anantara dvijavara prayāṇa karile vātsya miśravara jāgrata haīyā sakalera nikaṭa punaḥ punaḥ svapnavṛttānta balite lāgilena. (15–16)

Takhana svapnakathā-śravaṇe janagaṇa śīghraī ānandita haīlena evaṁ sei viśvambharake mahāpuruṣottama baliyā mane karilena. Pitā ānande nijeke pūrṇamanoratha bhāvilena evaṁ jananīo parituṣṭā haīlena.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga dāsa: Kavi Karṇapura… Caitanya-carita-mahākāvya… Bengali translation of that… translation is good.

103 to 107

Deva Gaurāṅga dāsa:

Śrī Caitanya-carita Mahā-kāvya 2.103–107

Kona eka divasa sadbuddhi sampanna pitā jagannātha miśra putrake krīḍāpara dekhiyā tiraskāra karata niśāyoge sukhe śayana kariyā āchena emata samaye saubhāgya baśataḥ svapne dekhilena. (103)

Eka jana brāhmaṇa āsiyā āmāke kahilena ahe miśra vara! “putra svatantra arthāt kāhārao bādhya nahe, sarvatā khelātei āsakta citta, āmāra ki haibe” ei mane kariyā tumi āviṣkṛta gaura-vigrahake bahu sammāna karitecha nā. (104)

Paśu yemana mahā-maṇira sparśa sukha grahaṇa o svacakṣe tāhā nirīkṣaṇa kariyā tāṅhāra sadasat bibecanā karite pāre nā, tāṅhāra nyāya tomāke dekhitechi, svabhāva mugdha vyaktira bibecanā kothāya? (105)

Ai brāhmaṇa ei prakāra krodha bhare ārakta netra haiyā vākya dvārā tarjana garjana karata kahite lāgile, miśra mahāśayera nidrā bhaṅga haila evaṁ tini hṛṣṭa citta haiyā vismaya sahakāre janasakalera nikaṭa ei, samudāya vṛttānta vistāra kariyā kahilena. (106)

Takhana śrotṛvarga jagannātha miśrera mukhe ei rūpa svapna vṛttānta śravaṇa kariyā sakalei vismita hailena evaṁ mana o vākya dvārā utsāha sahakāre sei puruṣa śreṣṭha gaurāṅga devake “ini sādhu” ei baliyā mānite lāgilena. (107)

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gaurāṅga chastised by His father and in the dream that Jagannātha Miśra had after that. Viśvambhara went to the Ganges, where He was playing with the boys. They were following the steps of the birds imprinted in the Ganges mud and who could place their steps in the birds prints fastest and reach the water without missing any of the birds’ steps, he would be victorious and the other would have to carry him on his back. So sometimes, somebody, some boy missed a bird’s print then he would lose, and he have to carry the other on his shoulder. So, Nimāi, He was working very hard at His play and the perspiration dripped out on His golden body and it looked like pearls of gold oozing out of His body. Sometimes He would be victorious and sometimes He would lose. In either case a boy carrying the other would perspire a lot from the hard work. Meanwhile Jagannātha Miśra came down to bathe in the Ganges. He observed his son’s play and then he told his son to come with him to the house and all boys ran home to their own homes. They were feeling somewhat embarrassed. When Viśvambhara reached the house. Jagannātha Miśra chastised Him, “You are not acting appropriate as a brāhmaṇa boy. You are playing around instead, neglecting Your studies. Now You have to study.” And he picked up a stick. “I will teach you a lesson”. And then Viśvambhara, He ran over to His mother’s lap to her side, and she said, “Don’t beat my son. Let Him be a fool, but live for a hundred years”. But Jagannātha Miśra, he said “If He is not studying then people will not speak well of Him, who will give their daughter to Him to protect? So, He must be responsible now”.” And Nimāi said in a soft voice, “I won’t play anymore. I won’t play anymore”. So, then Jagannātha Miśra dropped the stick and then although he was burning inside, he spoke very sweetly outside, “If You study, people will speak nice of You, and I will give You bananas”. Then he took Viśvambhara on his lap and he gave him a hug and Śacīmātā, she also gave Viśvambhara, Nimāi a hug.

That night when Jagannātha Miśra took rest he had a dream of a very effulgent brāhmaṇa. He could not even look at him; he was so bright, so brilliant. He came, “You do not know who your son is. How you are chastising Him?” “I don’t care if my son is a great yogī or some transcendental personality or a demigod. It is my duty as His father, I have to train Him, and I have to see that He grows properly. Otherwise, who will teach Him?”

“But if He is a self-effulgent knowledgeable person, what does He need your education for?”

“He may be Nārāyaṇa, but I am His father. I have to see that He grows up properly”. Like this the two were discussing. And the brāhmaṇa, he was laughing, and he left. And Jagannātha Miśra woke up, “What a strange dream!” He called all of his relatives and neighbors, “I had this dream, what does it mean?” And he repeated the dream he had. He said, “It is my duty. As a father I have to see to His proper upbringing”. So Jagannātha Miśra was totally absorbed in a parental bhāva. Just like in Vṛndāvana-līlā, we see Yaśodā and Nanda Mahārāja; they just saw that Kṛṣṇa was their small child. So Jagannātha Miśra, he just saw Lord Caitanya was his small child.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga dāsa: That brāhmaṇa was Lord Himself, according to Caitanya-Maṅgala. And that brāhmaṇa told him that animal… just as an animal can’t understand the potency of touchstone, you don’t understand the potency of Viśvambhara.

Jayapatākā Swami: It’s kind of two ways. The brāhmaṇa, who was speaking to Jagannātha Miśra, he said that just as an animal cannot understand a touchstone, so similarly you are not able to understand the actual position of Viśvambhara.

Vidvān Gaurāṅga dāsa: All the people, who heard Jagannātha Miśra’s dream, they became very happy…

Jayapatākā Swami: All the people, who heard Jagannātha Miśra’s dream, they became very happy and they were filled with spiritual bliss. Gaurāṅga! Such were the daily pastimes of Lord Gaura Hari.

Jayapatākā Swami: Yeah! Break and refresh and maybe…

Vidvān Gaurāṅga dāsa: Yeah! If you, at any point if you want to stop, you can stop with that and then you can speak. And then we can continue reading and then again you can speak. Ultimately, we will integrate and bring it back to you.
