The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on May 4, 1981 – in Kolkata, India. The lecture begins with a reading from Bhagavad-gītā 9.14.

Always chanting my glorious endeavoring with great determination bowing down before me. These great souls perpetually worship me with devotion and not being manufactured by overstamping and ordinary man. His symptoms are described here. A Mahatma is always engaged in chanting the glory of the sustaining Lord Kṛṣṇa, the personality of Godhead. He has no other business. He is always engaged in the glorification of the Lord. In other words, he is not an immersion of Him. When the question of glorification is there, one has to glorify the Supreme Lord praising His holy name, his eternal form, his transcendental qualities and his uncommon passion. One has to glorify all these things. Therefore, a Mahatma is attached to the Supreme God. One who is attached to the immersion of each other of the Lord. Is Lama Joseph not described as Mahatma in the Bhagavad Gītā?

He is described in a different way in the next verse. The Mahatma is always engaged in different activities of devotional service as described in the stream of hearing and chanting about Vishnu Nothing God as a human being that is Devotion and remembering Satya Mahatma has firm determination to attain achieved at the ultimate anti association of the Supreme Lord in any one of the five continental r. To achieve that success, he all activities mental, bodily and vocal everything in the service of the Supreme Lord that is called Full Kṛṣṇa Consciousness. In devotional service there are certain activities which are called determined such as fasting on certain days like the 11th day of the moon and on the appearance day of the Lord etc.

All these rules and regulations are authored by the great Acharyas for those who are actually interested in getting admission into the association of the Supreme Personality God that can against the world. The Mahatma Grave souls simply observe all these rules and revelations and therefore they are sure to achieve the desired result. Describing the second verse of this chapter. This devotional service is not only easy, but it can be performed in a happy One does not technique to undergo any severe connection or austerity. He can live this life in devotional service guided by an expert spiritual master and in any position either as a householder, a Vihasta or a Sanyasi or a Brahmochari in any position in anywhere in the world. He can perform this devotional service through the Supreme Personality Godhead and thus become actually Mahatma, a great soul.

It is a description of the Mahatma. O Son of Trika. Those who are not deluded in great souls are under the protection of the Divine nature. They are fully engaged in devotional service because they know me as the Supreme Personality Of Godless, original and inexhaustible. Always chanting my glorious endeavoring with great determination Bowing down before me these great souls perpetually worshiping with devotion. These verses are very important for everyone. Because to be a Mahatma or a great soul is something which is not a monopoly that is available to all people, all human beings. They have the opportunity to become a Mahatma. There are generally in opposition to Mahatma Duratma. Duratma means someone with not a great soul, but a lower than the Lord. So generally people are heading in one direction or the other. Either one is progressing to becoming Mahatma.

For one is degressing to become a Buraki. There are so many innocent people who are in the in between stage. But they are progressing or digesting in one direction or the other. Depending upon the lifestyle and the goals of their life. So nobody can eternally remain the same. One has to either become a Mahatma, become a Muftma, a liberated soul. Or he has to fall down further and further into the Samathara and become a GMA or a continually conditioned living entity who is completely and ignorance laws, all signs of his eternal self. So it’s sometimes conceived that to be Mahatma is something very vague. No doubt it is something very great. Otherwise why great soul is given. But it is not something which is very difficult or which has to be painfully performed. To be a Mahatma, one has to accept a joyful life.

Who does not want to accept a joyful life? Is there anybody here who does not want a joyful life? Raise your hand then. I understand. Everybody here wants a joyful life. Raise your hand. So this is the very simple system is given. Always chant Lord. Lord to always chant the Lord’s glory. What is difficult about that? Nothing is difficult. We see that in the history of this planet there are great souls of various times. Of course, the greatest soul is Kṛṣṇa himself. Kṛṣṇa S2. God is one. But he expands himself in different absolute Vishnu forms to perform different Palestine. Like Ram, Naraya, Narasiṁha, Bhavana, Maharshanu, Bhagavad, Sai, Vishnu and into separated form a Mahavir. And into completely separated into an form like the living entities, the Jīva. So Kṛṣṇa, he is the greatest soul.

He is so great that if someone glorifies, then he becomes great. We find in the offices of many of our light members and also many of the universities. Pictures of themselves standing with a certain Prime Minister or governor or some great poet like Tagore. Or someone was always unsabili. Because if someone is with A great person that implies a certain prestige or basis upon that person. Also, to simply be associated with the great person pulls oneself into problems. So here, by constantly associating with Kṛṣṇa, the one becomes the greatest that a living entity can possibly become. By associating with the greatest of the great, the supreme personality of God. We find in the Bhagavad that Kṛṣṇa himself, although the supreme personality of value, he showed how to deal perfect household. He 16,108 queens in Dara.

He performed his household life just according to the Vedic system. It is not ordinarily possible for someone to marry 16,100 each wife. But there is nothing for Kṛṣṇa. Of course, Kṛṣṇa provided each wife with a separate talent and a kn. And thousands and thousands of servants. When Kṛṣṇa would enter into Dwarka, then at the time of entering into the palaces, he would expand himself simultaneously into 16,108 Kṛṣṇas. And he would simultaneously enter each of the palaces. And each queen would think that Kṛṣṇa is entering my Kṛṣṇa, my husband is entering my palace. And Mahayamuri also he toured all these 16,000 palaces. And he observed that he needs palace. Kṛṣṇa was performing different types of activities simultaneously. One palace he is comforting a child, a son. Another palace he is playing chess or some other pastime. Another palace he is discussing with his wife.

Another palace is engaged in some political consultation regarding the kingdom. Another palace is putting hands on the spies to go amongst the people. The spy what is the Lord? And each and every Taoist is doing a different activity. So not only being himself, a qualified yogī who could expand himself to 10 different forms, he will understand that this particular organ, Śrī Kṛṣṇa to expand himself into 16,000 forms, each one experiencing a different emotion, a different activity, completely independent of each other. What’s completely far from the potency of any yogī to perform. Because the yogī, even if he expands himself into Ashtaru or Dasaru, he has only one consciousness. It is not that one body is laughing and other body is crying. The Ātmā is one, the feelings are one. But the activities may be they are in 10 different bodies by the yogī.

But in each and every expansion that Kṛṣṇa made that he expanded, there was a complete independence in action and in food. And in the morning when Kṛṣṇa left his palaces and went to the Sudhana Sabha, which was stolen and taken down from Indaloka and established in Darka, there again the 16,108 Kṛṣṇa as they left the palace, all joined again into one and went into the royal assembly. The special thing of the Sudhana assembly was at the six miseries of material life, namely thirst, hunger, lamentation, illusion always and death. Anyone who was as salah as anyone remained within that salah. He would not be afflicted by any of those six material missions or defects.

So although Kṛṣṇa has intensive potency, we find that he would be lying in bed with his wife and as soon as the 3 o’clock in the morning, the crow would cry out, the cow, chicken, cow would cry out. Immediately he would rise, perform meditation on himself. Of course, he has no one else to meditate upon because he himself is the Param Brahma. So he has to perform only on himself. That does not mean we should perform on ourselves. We should also perform on Kṛṣṇa or the Param Brahma. Then he would take his morning bath. He would give so much charity. He would, after finishing his meditation, he take his bath. He gives charity to the Bharana. He performs all these different rituals that we ask our householder in the Vedic system is supposed to perform to show how a person should be respectful today.

Vedic system, how one should follow. Now Veda say we should follow Kṛṣṇa, we should not imitate. That means that this is Kṛṣṇa here following the Vedic system, we should follow the Vedic system. Just as here meditating, we should imitate.

But if we say no, I want.

To marry 16,000, it’s not possible to simultaneously expand ourselves and provide each one a Dallas and do that we want to imitate. Say we want to go to Indra Loka and take the Parijata flower or Satya Rāma. Let it not be possible to imitate to survive. There are certain extraordinary activities which Kṛṣṇa performs which no one is in. Like the Gandhians. If someone wants to say I want to dance with the Gobi, that will not be possible. That will be offensive. Then they burst and lift up over Dandhil with their small finger before entering into these other passions. But in general with Kṛṣṇa, although he has no duty to perform, he also showed what is the perfect way of being in this. He showed that one should not be attached.

As soon as the Brahma Muhar Tower.

Came, 3:30 in the morning, he rose up and began his Kṛṣṇa conscious activity. Even though he himself is Kṛṣṇa. So Kṛṣṇa is a person, body is not a material person. He may perform so many different pastimes for his own pleasure and for the pleasure of his devotees. But if one actually analyzes, he can see that these activities are not possible to be performed by an ordinary person. Therefore, Kṛṣṇa is not a human being. He is Bharavan is Swati Rand, Sachin Ananda fully blissful Bigra. That is the nature of his transcendental form. He is with form. So we find that there are many great devotees who have taken shelter of Kṛṣṇa. And by doing so they are under the protection of Kṛṣṇa. They are always under the shelter of Kṛṣṇa.

Just like we find that the great devotee, the sun matter and devotee of Kṛṣṇa, Aniruddha and all his sons of Kṛṣṇa, they were fully dependent on Kṛṣṇa. Aniruddha is the son of Kaduna, who is himself commonly a Cupid. So one of the great devotees of V. Shiva, who was the son of Bali Maharaj is Bahamasur Bhagi Maharaj. You know, he surrendered everything to Bhavi. Therefore Bhavi became his doorkeeper and protected him in the Sutta Sudha. Man is more utterly than a heavenly man, than a Swarva, although it is situated in a lower position in the universe. So this Banasura from his very child was a great devotee of Mahadev of Lord Shiva. And he got the benediction of Lord shiva to have 1000 arms. So with these thousand arms one time Lord Shiva was dancing his nagar arms.

And with a thousand arms he was beating drums. And this was helping Lord Shiva greatly advancing. So he gave him complete beneficiary. So it’s a very rare beauty. Completely protected. She never saw a man. Except for her father and a very few infinite relatives. She was always kept protected. One night she had a dream. And in that dream she saw the person to whom she was going to be wedded and was very attracted that she started crying out in her sleep. And her girlfriend Chituleka, she was very surprised to find her calling out after some man. She had never had any association with a man. The Chitoraya had some mystic power. So in discussion she started to draw different pictures of the great men of the world.

That night Kṛṣṇa Bhagavad, when she got to Praduna, then she became blushing Pusha, that is the voice.

Then she delivered up by she went over a plum, took aunt and brought.

Him back inside the palace with Usha. There Usha began to serve him just as the wife. And after some time it became known that Pusha was somehow under the symptoms were visible. However, having escaped Vamasura had his own special weapon. And he captured them with that weapon Amiruta. When Kṛṣṇa heard about this then Kṛṣṇa and the whole jaguar died to see all the highways. They came and attacked the capital of Banasur for capturing.

At that time Banasur followed on Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva, Ganesh, Kartikeya they also came. Kartikeya took out the armies of Banasur.

And others were there. And they began to fight with the armies of Kṛṣṇa.

Kṛṣṇa was fighting with Lord Shiva.

Bhura was fighting with the commander of Kṛṣṇa’s army. Balaram was fighting with Karthikeya.

In this way they divided each other.

And they were fighting. So between the fight between Kṛṣṇa and Lord Śiva. First so many weapons were being thrown back and forth at each other. And finally when everything else failed, then Lord Shiva he had his Shiva Dwar.

Shiva Dwar is the ultimate weapon. The fortitude already had failed.

The Shiva draw the ultimate weapon of Lord Shiva.

That weapon which burned out the whole universe into dissolution. That weapon he discharged the Kṛṣṇa. And Kṛṣṇa he was enforced to call.

His ultimate weapon in Nayan blood.

And with his ny God weapon.

You see, the Shiva weapon means ultimately he did produce. And the Nayana weapon produces unlimited coal. So someone can someone survive heat. But cold no one can survive.

So when the two weapons contacted naturally.

When heat contacts cold, gradually it cools down.

So gradually the Narayan God was cooling down the Shiva Daj. Finally Shiva Dwarj knew that he was dying. He was being finished. He called to Shiva, please help.

Shiva had no poverty.

Then he surrendered to Kṛṣṇa. And he prayed that you are the ultimate supreme personality. Without him all the prophecy of all devils of Shiva from you. Therefore I surrender today upon you and take your soul helping us. Take yourself with Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa and gave him survival. Then he proceeded with his Surah chapter to cut off all the hours of Ba. In the meantime he put his yawning.

Weapon on Lord Shiva and put Lord Shiva to sleep.

Then he took his Sudarshan chakra and started to chop off all the arms of Anasur. He said, sitting on the tree when he was down with his forearms and Lord Shiva Yoga and he prayed to voice to Kṛṣṇa that this devotee he has done some nice service unto. Therefore I was trying to protect you. You are the Supreme Court. You are my eternal master. We were enjoying the sports of fighting. But I request you to please save this devotee on my behalf. Then Lord Kṛṣṇa said, of course, how can I kill him? He is the son of Bori Mahad, our daughter said, he and his descendants.

 will always be protected by you.

But I repent all his arms to four arms.

Because he will be resident of Bhai Taloka.

So he has to keep four arms. And then Mahasur brought forward Usha and there had a royal marriage with Amiruta. So the secret of the story is that all the denigas they only buy the parasol from him or by the Kṛṣṇa. And ultimately they can only give benediction to their devotees if Kṛṣṇa gets permission. So here we see that someone under selfish Kṛṣṇa he is always protected by Kṛṣṇa. And no one else can give that absolute protection sentiment. So if someone wants to be always safe from all levels of calamity to Hashim a very simple practice to constantly keep that under Chant the glory. What is the easiest way to chant the glory? We believe these stories of the Harvard.

And Absolute Truth.

By discussing a lot of new personalities like Lord Shiva, like Kṛṣṇa, the supreme personality of God. Then anything is possible. Therefore we have no reason to doubt nor any reason to question the possibilities. So my daughter might be baptized.

Definitely the demigod is worshipped as the father Vishnu knowledge of independence. Knowing that this also key is to teach the general populace. Not everyone in the population is a pure Vaishnava. So to all who show them a proper way they’re showing the differences. But actually J Mahu he showed that there’s no need in this to perform any other type of worship or form. In fact therefore they had to satisfy D Ma because the special potential is that he subscribed.
