The following is a lecture given by His Holiness Jayapatākā Swami Mahārāja on June 7, 1981 – in New Orleans, USA. The lecture begins with a reading from Bhagavad-gītā 3.30-31.

As it is Karma Yoga chapter 3 text 30 and 31 translation by his Divine grace, the founder Acharya of the International Society for Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Text 30 Therefore, O Arjuna, surrendering all your works unto me, with mind intent on me, and without desire for gain, and free from egoism and lethargy, fight one who executes his duties according to my injunction, and who follows this teaching faithfully without envy, becomes free from the bondage of fruitive actions. Purport by Rla Prabhupāda the injunction of the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Kṛṣṇa is the essence of all Vedic wisdom and therefore is eternally true without exception. As the Vedas are eternal, so this truth of Kṛṣṇa Consciousness is also eternal. One should have firm faith in this injunction without envying the Lord. There are many philosophers who write comments on the Bhagavad Gītā, but have no faith in Kṛṣṇa.

They will never be liberated from the bondage of fruitive actions. But an ordinary man with firm faith in the eternal injunctions of the Lord, even though unable to execute such orders, becomes liberated from the bondage of the law of Karma. In the beginning of Kṛṣṇa Consciousness, one may not fully discharge the injunctions of the Lord, but because one is not resentful of this principle and work sincerely without consideration of defeat and hopelessness, he will surely be promoted to the stage of pure Kṛṣṇa Consciousness. Death and the purport of text 31 by RLA Prabhupāda so here in the chapter on Karma Yoga, the Yoga of activities of action. Karma means work or action. We understand that the goal of Karma Yoga is to transcend the reaction of work.

Due to being entangled in the law of action and reaction, a person is forced to suffer and enjoy in this material world. Of course, enjoying people do not object to, but the suffering nobody wants, but without asking for it, they are forced to suffer. This is called Law of Karma. Just as in physics there’s a law of action and reaction, for every action there’s an equal and opposite reaction. This is one of the laws of physics. But on the subtle platform, whether or not that law of physics is actually in fact confirmed, that’s another question. But it is confirmed in the law of Karma that for every action there is a reaction. And the reaction depending on the type of action may be even more, may even be more severe.

But for every action there is a reaction, and that reaction is definite and sure to come. But when it will come, that is not definite. It may come at any time. Just like suddenly someone is walking down the street and President Reagan walks out of the hotel and somebody starts shooting at him. And there he was, innocent. Standby, passerby. He gets shot. Why he got shot? Why him? This is law of karma. And some people are ready to die or ready to be hit and not die due to some previous activity that they have performed. Not even in this life. Someone may even be relatively good in this life. Although in this day and age, it’s very hard to be relatively good in this life. But taking it that one might be even a vegetarian. Even not engaged in any type of extreme exploitation.

Still at any moment, some danger may come. Even from seven births, fifteen births, hundred births before, in history of incarnation, reincarnation. The law of karma is very intricate. It comes in seven layers. And each of those seven layers are going by a different beat, by a different tempo. So that way no one can exactly calculate what reaction from what period of time. In any case, we generally don’t even remember what were our previous births when they will come upon. So therefore, a human being is meant, however, to get out of this sentient law of conduct. A human being is meant to get out of this Vincent law of conscience, to transcend it. Transcendental consciousness means consciousness which is above the laws of Karma. To be transcendentally situated means to be above the bondage of the reaction.

Sometimes people say, how does it feel to be in Kṛṣṇa consciousness? You really feel happy looking square in the eye. And they ask, what does it feel as if just a blanket is trying to immediately convince that person. But actually someone who engages in pure Kṛṣṇa conscious activities immediately feels relief, not the relief of some type of sentimental adjustment, that now I am free from laws of Karma, or now I am free from some type of material situation. Therefore, one may feel type of sentimental Whoopi grape. No, not like that, but actually just as much as if one is actually in a very heavy bind and some actually gets out immediately we are like one bolt or not in this vast machine which is spinning, which is called the wheel of Karma.

And when actually one follows the instructions of Kṛṣṇa without envy, or even tries to, even he may not be able to follow it, because if he just wants to follow, I want to be out of this law of Karma. I want to be under the shelter of Kṛṣṇa. Immediately one is taken out of that machine. And this like, there’s so much pressure on every knot, bolt, gear, you take it out, that pressure is not there immediately one feels the release. What is that? Release becomes a natural happiness, natural joy of the soul becomes manifest superseded teeth, the Yatma superseded tea, the ātmā or the soul becomes filled with spiritual bliss. So of course, for someone who is in that wheel of karma, it is very difficult to theoretically try to understand what it’s like to not be under the grinding stone.

When one has a monkey on his back for so long, the only way he will know what it feels like to not have a monkey on his back is to take off the monkey. Everyone in this material world has got the monkey under, but the monkey’s been there so long they’re more or less ignoring it, that at every moment so many different types of inconvenience are there. We’re sitting now, it’s very hot. If there was a nice fan blowing, then everyone would think, oh, this is very nice to say. Sometimes they commercial beverage companies advertise, taste so good, it’s fun to be thirsty. But thirst is not fun. Thirst means that we’re miserable, our throat is dry, we’re uncomfortable. But then we think, oh, when I am drinking, very nice. This is pleasure. What is the standard of that pleasure?

Standard of that pleasure is we’re suffering. Then we get some little relief. Oh, I am happy. This is a basic standard of material enjoyment. If we are suffering, we’re agītāted, our mind is unrested, and then we get some relief from that built up passion or built up desire, built up misery. And then we think, oh, this is very satisfying. Actually, we don’t have a direct perception of what real happiness is. Real happiness is another category which is beyond karma, which is beyond even the mental and physical platform. Just like right now, something cold to drink. That’s very nice. But if someone brings out something hot, it may not be appreciated because already we’re hot. When I just was recently in Latin America, they gave me so many sweaters because there it’s in the winter now. But those sweaters here, they’re not appreciated, right?

Because here it’s hot. So like that one man’s poison, right, is another man’s food. One man’s food is another man’s poison. Like that. What we like now in the summer we won’t like in the winter. So we think that this thing will make me happy. We desire and we think and we work, we plan and we get that. We realize already the time has changed already. What we thought would make us happy when we planned, by the time we reached that thing, we already practically are already desiring something else. Well, we get it wasn’t what we expected. So we go back to the drawing board, make a new plan. For happiness. And this way, this is called law of Karma. We’re always trying to be happy by our own planning and scheming.

Then we work for it, and we think, by my work, I will get this happiness. But while we’re working, whether or not we will succeed or not is depending on what we have done in the past. Even in previous births, even if we get what we want, still, that’s not what we expect. We’re getting bored. How many people have gone through this? Do something for two months, get completely bored and look, oh, now what to do? I met a boy in Bolivia. He was in one of his Christian Youth Service student exchange programs. He was so bored in North America, so he somehow or another he had to cross great hurdles to convince his parents to allow him to go on an exchange program. They went down to Bolivia. Of course, there was a revolution. The Bolivian government revolted.

More times than a year since it’s been existing, so the schools are closed for the first month. So now the schools have opened, but still already two months are over. He’s already completely bored. He’s already thinking now what else to do. What’s the next thing that nice Bacalar student? Sony. They’re going all over the world. When I was flying from England to Miami, the plane was filled with British citizens who were going to Miami for their holidays. And I was told when I got to Miami that all the Britishers that go on the beach in suntan for the two weeks of the holiday, save for two years the money so they can fly to Miami for a holiday. Things have gone cheaper in America than in Europe or England.

Then they go on the beach and they all turn lobster red because British people are very white. There’s no sun in England. They completely turn lobster red. I don’t think they heard about sun candles. And they peel and I mean, they look. And then I saw in the street, you see the completely red sunburn with peeling skin. You can see this is their enjoyment, enjoying the holidays, going down and Brian on the beach. So they worked for two years thinking that saving. When I go to Miami, I will enjoy. What do they do? They go there, of course they come, they get a big suntan sometimes there now they get robbed by somebody or this or that. There’s so many difficulty.

Or they just enjoy their little fling for their two weeks and they go back to England and they show off everybody their red suntan. And everyone thinks, oh, he went to Miami and he enjoyed. I have to go there sometimes. What is the enjoyment for two years they’re doing what they don’t particularly like to do necessarily. And they’re thinking that go to Miami, I will get a break. I will go to New Orleans, the big tourist spot also. So this is the type of karmic attitude Karmī work hard and then in the future I will enjoy time being no enjoyment. Always in the future, time being little drops, but the big enjoyment when I hit it wrist. That’s why so many people who make the top big movie stars, big millionaires, they go crazy or they commit suicide. Look at Howard Hughes.

What are they going to do? They get paranoid, they have got everything, they don’t know what to do. Then they’re afraid someone’s going to take it. Or they just get frustrated like Marilyn Monroe and so on and just drink a couple bottles of sleeping pills and think, well, finish it off. Where else to go. Day by day they’re getting old. Who’s going to look at them anymore? All this type of very unfortunate circumstances can be avoided. All these great dangers can be avoided by little spiritual understanding. Just a little bit. It says, even if one has a desire, I would like to be situated on a platform independent of all these stringent laws.

I would actually like to be in a free spiritual atmosphere even one may not be able to follow everything, but just as a desire to attain to that platform that just by that desire alone one will gradually be able to make reach perfection. Of course the Kṛṣṇa conscious movement is famous. People always ask why you have bald head? What is that white mark? I came to the customs and the lady asked why you? What is a white mark on your forehead? Of course this means that our body is a temple and because we are a monk, we are wearing bald head because seeker means we believe in personality or Godhead. We are not impersonal. Everything has a meaning. But of course this type of uniform is for those who are basically the full time preachers in our movement.

But we have hundreds and thousands and countless devotees who are in the society, chanting, reading these literatures, trying to transcend the laws of karma, trying to understand who they are, where they’re going, what is the meaning of life? Human being means responsible. Animal is not responsible for what he does because animal automatically acts according to the instinct of nature. Therefore, animal cannot create any sin. Animal automatically does according to if you put a lion in the room, he will eat you. That is not sinful because a lion, that’s his nature. But human being has a choice to either shoot you or to pat you on the back. But a lion, you will have no choice. You put angry lion here, he will eat us all. He will kill us because that’s his nature. Similarly you put a deer, he will be afraid, he will want to run away.

The animal has some instinct, has some particular nature. Of course, even wild animal can be tamed. Even a wild animal can be trained. But bad taming or training comes from outside. But the human being, if he’s un willing. It’s not possible to train an envious or un willing human being. He can’t train him. Human being has to train himself. Of course he needs also help and guidance. Some spiritual masters from advanced people, from spiritual life. They know about the law of karma. If you. If someone has something, fortune happen immediately. The people would say, oh, this is from the previous lifetime. One of our devotees, they own a garage car repair. The Nandi family initiation conditioning party. And mother Nandit has about three, four sons. One of her sons suddenly died, drowned in a. And of course all the family members are very upset.

They had the cremation and they all went out to Māyā port with a nice spiritual atmosphere. And were sitting on the. In the lawn, by the fountains, there in the garden. And then we saw mother Nandi coming with the others. And she was laughing. And so then I remember the Vishnu must be just a false rumor. His son couldn’t have died. He felt jealous. And then he came up and he asked her, I heard that your son had died. He said, you’re not lamenting. He said, why should I lament? He didn’t die. Soul doesn’t die. He’s changed bodies. Kṛṣṇa has taken him away. He’s already gone. What’s to lament? Suddenly he was taken away. How can we lament? Whatever the Lord does is perfect. And traditionally of course mothers everywhere are very emotional. And the Bengali mothers are very emotional.

Indian mothers in general are very emotional. But she had attained for the 50 year old woman such a spiritual faith and understanding that even her own son died. She took it that it was the Lord’s mercy and there was no reason to lament. Because the death doesn’t mean that there’s an end. It means that the gross body is there, the subtle body and the spirit soul is gone. So his name returning Hare Kṛṣṇa for the favorable destination of the soul. She’s not lamenting that oh, the person is dead. No one dies. They just changed their body called death. That means reincarnate. So practically you can say that what is says here that one is not disturbed by defeat and hopelessness. But if one has knowledge, what’s a question of deceit or hopelessness? Because people are in ignorance. And in ignorance they make their plans.

In ignorance they are successful, or they suffer deceit and ignorance, they feel deceit and hopelessness, or they feel false elation, which later on turns into disgust or into lamentation. Because no one can maintain any status in this material world perpetually. Just like President Carter here, of course, he was a victor four years ago, and he was smiling and beaming and encouraging all his followers. But this time he lost. Similarly, everyone will win sometimes, and sometimes they’re going to lose. Every Muhammad Ali is going to only be the greatest for a short time. And then he was going to be a. Has been. So that means that there’s going to be deceit and there’s going to be hopelessness unless one has spiritual knowledge.

And because there is no spiritual knowledge, therefore there is so much trouble in the world today that in spite of the human being responsible, they don’t act responsibly because they don’t know what they should do and what they shouldn’t do. There are subtle laws, just like in a courtroom when a lawyer and a judge lie to each other. Judge is supposed to represent justice. He’s supposed to be, in a sense, representing even to some extent, the justice which we look to God, to Kṛṣṇa, for justice. And the lawyer, he is under oath to speak the truth as well as the witnesses. So when they lie, which happens a lot nowadays, when they lie, this pollutes the atmosphere. This creates a pollution in the atmosphere. Because in the name of justice and truth, they’re lying, they’re committing falsehood.

So the ether in which that lying vibrations are being produced in the name of justice becomes contaminated. And from that ether comes disease, plague, pestilence, war. From that Ethernet, from that atmosphere, from the subtle, the growth reactions. So like this. There are so many things which are affecting our society. The screams of the animals in the slaughterhouse, this pollutes the atmosphere. As a result, needlessly people are sent to Vietnam wars, to different areas to fight. Because there’s so many needless animals that were slaughtered, they have to also be slaughtered. Similarly, now the stage is being set for some other crises to come. So more and more young men can be slaughtered. Because nobody understands what is this universe, what are the subtle laws. There’s physicists, how they can. They can scratch this. They accept that on a gross level there’s a reaction.

But on a subtle level, why they think that nature is so Blind that there is no reaction. Why people are born blind, what sin they have committed. Because in previous births they have committed sin. They have committed activities which have caused them in this birth to get such an unfortunate birth. People are acting blindly in this life and next life. If they’re born blind, they wonder why I have been born blind. Because their previous life they acted blindly or they forced others to be blind, therefore they are born blind. Even a human being may be born in animal birth. Of course, some people think that’s an advantage, but it’s not an advantage because you don’t have the opportunity to get liberated, which we do have in this human birth.

Of course, liberated souls, they have a different standard of happiness and a different standard of personal dealing because they have compassion. So they do not like to see. Those who are suffering continue to suffer. Therefore they selflessly work to disseminate spiritual knowledge. Even people do not understand. Just like someone who’s in shock in an accident, sometimes you touch him or someone who’s drowning. You see the first thing they teach you when you’re drowning, when a person is drowning, that a lifesaver may go to save him. That person may grab on, you may pull you down because he’s mad, he’s fast. You may go to save him. Sometimes you may have to spug him because he may grab and drown, try to drown you just. And it’s the first thing he grabs onto. He just grabs onto it, tries to pull himself.

In the meanwhile, the lifesaver is being drowned. You have to break free. And if he’s frantic, sometimes you even have to knock him out. We don’t have any knockout system in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. But the point is that even someone may not who’s being saved. He may not appreciate it, what’s happening once he gets taken to the shore, once he gets out of the water, then he can appreciate. Oh, thank you very much. I am sorry I was so wild. I was so like that. Even in preaching, sometimes people say, what are these Hare Kṛṣṇas doing? Just simply. But then if they understand what is actually being done, what is the thing which is being preached, non sectarian spiritual knowledge is being disseminated.

(Side B of the Cassette)

Love for Kṛṣṇa. Perfection of all yoga practices being disseminated. If someone understands even affection. Oh, so the special quality of Caitanya Mahakabu is that he accepts everyone whether they are qualified or whether they are unqualified, whether they have advanced or whether they are unadvanced. Anyone. Simply if a desire is there to reach perfection, simply if a small desire is, then easily they give the money. And Bengal people, just by chanting for some time they start crying. Just their names are so sacred that it melts the heart. So before we chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, we always chant the name Śrī Kṛṣṇa. Caitanya Prunipod Harvas. This is our mystic mantra which is preparing the ground for planting the seeds of the Hare Kṛṣṇa Brahman by chanting the name of Caitanya. Caitanya’s deities are there on the left hand side with the hands raised.

This is preparing one’s consciousness for a chanting Hari Kṛṣṇa. So we are requesting that everyone should chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. Chant the names of Chaitanya Mahatma as a daily practice. There’s no reason. Our founder Acharya stated in the Bhāgavatam. There’s no reason why every family in every country of the world cannot chant Hare Kṛṣṇa every day, every night in his home. There’s no reason why they can’t. It’s so simple. Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare Ram Hare Ram Ram and Śrī. I was telling how one time the son of Nityānanda Peru is on the left. We went to a big reunion. Just like now we’re having a reunion of so many devotees for these type of festivals. They have been held for thousands of years. Just like every year india. Every six years india there’s a.

A mella in a triad, of course, full mella every 12 years and every 6 years has mella that’s called the Kumbh Mella. Last Kumbh mela was in 1977, 31 million people assembled. And before that in 1971 they had a half Kumbha. Only 21 million people. They all come and they take a bath in the sacred Ganges river. Because during that moment it’s astrologically very auspicious. Anyone who bathes at that moment is guaranteed liberation from the larger karma. People are very eager to get out of Lords of Karma. All the villagers, they come, of course. Unfortunately, the city people, they don’t come so much. Village people, they all still come. This type of gathering of festivals has been going on for thousands of years. So like that, what you can understand.

He went to one festival and he started to chant and dance with his followers. And it was so beautiful. Everyone just gathered around and started to chant with him. And his dancing was so ecstatic. It was so obvious. He was so much into the mood of chanting and dancing that practically everyone became in lapses and start to clap their hands and to watch and see this very ecstatic Kirton and the kids on started and the afternoon it went on right into the night and just kept increasing and going through different moods. The cancer goes to different moods of joy. And I feel like separation for this kind of spiritual melancholy and. And again to joy. So finally one blind man was just what is happening? I said, oh, you can understand Vivaja with lotus eyes, he’s jumping arms. And what else is. How unfortunate.

I cannot see. I do not have a. What else is he doing now he’s playing the cymbals and he’s dancing in circles with other devotees. And this way he kept asking for about a half an hour what Lord Nikananda son was doing. Deer bhajra. And he became so eager to see that just by hearing the name of Birbhajara and being so eager, suddenly he, even though he was blind from birth, his eyesight and of course all the devotees were very enlightened that the blind man was able to see just by the mercy of his desire and by his desire to participate in his conclusion, watch his exhibition like this. There are so many, countless miracles which have occurred. The miracle that people who are habitual, hopeless people, that they become spiritually enlivened, that of course, is the greatest miracle.

So this Lord Nithyananda Kabu, he has opened up one, what he called the marketplace of the Holy Moon, Namhat. That means that just like in a marketplace, all type of people, rich and poor, young and old, black and white, brown and yellow, every kind of person, they’re all going to the marketplace and buying and getting whatever they need, exchange for their money. So he made marketplace of the Holy Name. That means that it’s a meeting place for everyone. No one is barred just as much as the market is a meeting place for everyone. Everyone goes to the market to get what they want to get the Holy Name. Everyone can come in this transcendental meeting place. And the exchange is not money, though. Exchanges, faith, love, devotion, as much as one has desire, has eagerness to get that pure name.

Because the name is chanted in different stages, beginning from the beginning stage to the most advanced stage. Everyone, they can come together by his Mercy and get this Holy Name by this divine mantra. The chanting creates a spiritual present, divine energetic presence which elevates the consciousness and delivers it above the material spirit immediately as soon as one purely chant. So Bhatkar, about 120 years ago, he or that marketplace of the Holy Name. And he established different about over 500 centers in different district and towns around the subcontinent of India. And he wrote letters to Canada and America and other European countries to try to establish also Kṛṣṇa Consciousness in the West 120 years ago.

And he predicted that very soon someone will come who will spread Kṛṣṇa Consciousness all over the world, who will spread this movement of Caitanya Mahu as It was predicted 500 years ago. And in fulfillment of that prediction, Bhaktivedanta Prabhupāda, Our founder Acharya 1966 set foot for the first time here in America and established the Harika movement in the western countries. Since that time, of course, it has spread to every continent in the world and over 45 different countries, I believe over a couple hundred branches, farms, restaurants, temples, meditation centers. And in addition to those full time Kṛṣṇa conscious centers, now we are having Kṛṣṇa Conscious Fellowship or brotherhood meditation centers in people’s homes all over the country and all over the world, literally thousands.

Anyone that can practice Kṛṣṇa Consciousness in their home, chanting, learning how to do it by coming here to the temple and inquiring from the devotees, and then practicing in one’s home, there’s no bar, one can go to the park, sit down with some beads and tents, or if the park is too public, he can go off on the beach, or he can lock himself in his closet and chant anywhere. Or you can go right in a public bus and chant. Counting is nice because if one counts, that means that he maintains a type of minimum standard of spiritual practice. Just like people count how many push ups they do, how many sit ups they do, how many laps they run, so they know that whether or not they’re staying in tone.

Otherwise if you just do it without counting one day you may do 10, maybe 50 how strong one is. That means how many times they’re able to do something. There is a test of strength. Similarly, there’s a different type of a spiritual strength that if one is chanting a regulated number of times every day, that is a type of indication of some spiritual advancement. Of course quality is also there, which is very hard to measure, but at least on minimum standard is there. The example has been given just like if you have a plant and if you water the plant one day, you put A lot of water. Next day you just put a little water. Then you put it for two days, lots of water. For five days, no water. So that plant will grow nicely.

Or the plant that every day you put the same amount of water. Which plant will grow nice? What do you think? Anyone has an opinion? Which plant will grow better? The plant that has regular water coming. So that’s why this counting system is there. The devotees count on their beads, you see, Sometimes they have a babe with the finger sticking out, they’re counting on beads. Some places they use other type of mechanisms for counting, or understand fingers. But a minimum, of course, the devotees sent 108 times, 16 times. We recommend people at least start. 108 times. Once in a day, 108 times. It’s a very auspicious number. It takes about seven to 10 minutes. Nothing. In fact, we recommend four times. One does that as a minimum. But at least one time. If one starts very nice and just in this way.

Practice chanting by oneself or with one’s wife, with one’s family members, nobody, group or single. And then you will see that gradually how the consciousness is elevated, the hopelessness, the despair, the boredom. One gradually will transcend all these things and understand what type of activities will give one happiness and what type of activities are simply supportive. But they won’t actually give us happiness, they will just maintain us. So this is a science. We’re very happy that you have all come here today to see San Kṛṣṇa Prasadam and to listen to these discussions. We hope that we could see more and more people coming with those beads around their necks, chanting beads, showing that they’re counting Hare Kṛṣṇa. Because then we will know that we will be actually saved from all the laws of karma, danger of the material world. And very quickly we will make advancements.

Our goal is that this. In the Louisiana alone, there could be over 1 million people chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa in their homes within the next two years. Right now there are already over thousand, but this could be over a million. It doesn’t take much time, just a little desire. And if someone just knows it all, how effective, how easy it is, who won’t do it. So we hope that everyone that does chant, they will try to encourage their friends to begin to chant. And everyone who doesn’t chant, they should try it, make an experiment. It mentions here in the Gītā different types of yoga. Karma Yoga, that means Yoga of action, Jñāna Yoga of knowledge, Bhakti Yoga of devotion.

And all the yogas have sacrifice A human being, he has to render some type of sacrifice to bring his mind and senses under the control of his spiritual intelligence. Then one becomes free from all these difficulties. So of all these sacrifices, Kṛṣṇa says the most powerful sacrifice is Japa. Japa means. Japa is a technical word that means chanting on beads or chanting and counting. Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare Ram Hare Ram Hari Hari Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare Ram Hare Ram Hare Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare Ram Hari Ram Hari Just like this flower garment, a chain is created. A chain is created. Meditation means one is supposed to fix the mind and the absolute. The people, they quietly try to meditate and all this. So many thoughts are coming in their brain.

They’re thinking about that they have to run off to go to work or they’re thinking about so many different things. We can’t stop the thoughts for the so called meditation, quiet meditation, cease to fire. Because in the mind the thoughts are going on without any cessation. So the process which has been revealed is that when one chants a transcendental vibration, then by hearing properly, one’s thoughts will be replaced by that vibration. And that time the mind becomes purified. The mind becomes actually. That’s the type of trance or samadhi trance and ecstatic condition. Once when fully, of course, the mind still may wander a little bit. But again and again you bring it back to listening to the chanting and you will see that your mind will become actually cleansed. It will become free from so many doubts, so many anxieties, so many miserable situations.

And actually one gets sheltered. My mother was an unbeliever. Suddenly she had a car accident. And just as this other car was coming, she started chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. And she was miraculously saved from very severe accidents. Just the shock of the accident even slightly pulled her back out. But she actually saved practically a head on collision. And then after that she could understand that by chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa she was actually saved. And since then she’s been chanting even though she’s elderly American. Not likely always to see them chant. So it doesn’t matter what one’s ages or what one’s upbringing might be. Anyone and you will see. But there’s immediately some effect within a very short time. So thank you very much for listening so patiently. Do I have any questions? Yes, that. Well, first of all, there are many practices mentioned.

But even in the Bhagavad Gītā, the conclusion was that even 5000 years ago Arjuna Wasn’t able to practice those other practices because they were too difficult to practice Samistic yoga, practice of meditation and haka yoga, when it’s actually supposed to go into the seclusion in some forests in the Himalayan mountains and like Buddha, sit down for six years, 10 years, 20 years, until one gets perfection. Otherwise he’s meditating, you know, behind the refrigerator before one goes to work in the morning. I mean I so many disciples I have, who are the tmers, you know, who meditate. Meditation, it doesn’t give you any mental set of sense because it doesn’t actually get to the what is the real goal of life? Our lives are very short and very disturbed with Iron Age. And even when it was a nicer material situation, peaceful.

All the machines and all the events, technology we have creates more and more anxiety for people. But so people minds are very disturbed. And these other processes depend upon a complete peaceful type of mentality. Only the champions can produce a peaceful mentality. Even in a disturbed mind. I think everybody’s mind is disturbed in the color you that means the chanting is the only time. And that’s what all these Vedas say. Haryanama, Haryanamay, vana, kalova, nashva, nashva. Go to one is practical. It’s not at all difficult. Most people don’t know much about yoga. Hatha yoga is very popular because it’s exercise. But as far as controlling your mind, it’s not very effective. And if your mind is in control, then how one can be peaceful? And if one isn’t peaceful, how can we be happy?

And if we don’t want to be happy, what do we want? Anybody in the room doesn’t want to be happy. Everybody wants to be happy. So if your mind is agītāted, if you’re not peaceful, then how are you going to be happy? Give it to the distance and make your mind peaceful. Peaceful mind is here. Then you can be happy. I was at Manta and they were building a house right next door. Because here they’re building a house right here, but there next door people have the radios blaring, you know, playing their favorite popular and they’re all singing along with the radio. I remember that when I was first joining the movement in Montreal, 1968, before I was sent to India in 1970, that time we didn’t have such a white popular support for so many different types of literature.

So at that time I was working outside in a factory and in the factory I was welding bed springs as a devotee and of course bringing my shot him in the temple there and working for probably coming to another job. But there in the factory. Then while welding, I’d be chanting harsh. But one can. I can know that one can chant under anything. Just singing a song. People are singing all the time. You get a little tired chanting. If you want to chant more and more. Then you stand up, walk around. But as far as this informal tantrum while he’s riding on the bus or riding on his motorcycle. If one’s going to sing a song, why not sing a song? A vibration which will liberate the consciousness. Even in that factory I was able to take mechanisms.

And all the other factory workers became envious of me. Because I wasn’t drinking with them or smoking with them at the same time. I was always smiling and singing. I remember some of the sexy works of some of those very nasty women. They started showing Dead Spring that because I wasn’t paying, I was always transferred to everybody. Anyway, I got another job. So. But one can chant anywhere. There’s no. There’s no impediment. The only impediment is our own mind. There’s no outside. Because nowadays don’t have to do this outside job. But there are many people out there in the world that are working outside. They can also so many night watchmen. The only real impediment is our own mental inhibition. But if we one time just sincerely chance. Okay, what is it? What? What is the meaning of transcendental pleasure?

What is the meaning of transcendental realization? Then after that we won’t stop. There’s nothing illegal. People are taking such great risks. There’s drugs because there’s different types of amnesia is something from that pain is numb. They risk being put in jail. Here’s which is not illegal. There’s no risk involved. Which actually gives one spiritual enlightenment and paternal person. So whereas the place doesn’t cost any money. Not because it’s cheap, but because it was given Dolan free. We cannot make a business out of something. We have got these people that are selling yoga systems. They’re banking business. Whether it’s ours, we can accept a donation from anyone. It’s called Dakshina. Someone takes initiation or takes something. They’re supposed to give some donation, but that’s always voluntary. There’s no minimum fee. If someone feels that I have got something worthwhile Ra.
