Introduction: Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya book, we are combining all the books on Kṛṣṇa Caitanya to write the Kṛṣṇa Caitanya book.
The compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book, the chapter entitled is:
Satyabhāmā Orders and Lord Caitanya Confirms to Write Vidagdha-mādhava and Lalita-mādhava Seperately, Part 1
Under the section: Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī’s Second Meeting with the Lord
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.34
śrī-rūpera vṛndāvanāgamana o nāṭaka racanārambhaḥ—
ethā prabhu-ājñāya rūpa āilā vṛndāvana
kṛṣṇa-līlā-nāṭaka karite haila mana
Translation: Meanwhile, following the order of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī returned to Vṛndāvana. He desired to write dramas concerning the pastimes of Lord Kṛṣṇa.
Jayapatākā Swami: Since Rūpa Gosvāmī was ordered by Lord Caitanya to write, so he is an empowered writer and he was thinking that he should write a drama on the pastimes of Lord Kṛṣṇa.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.35
vṛndāvane nāṭakera ārambha karilā
maṅgalācaraṇa ‘nāndī-śloka’ tathāi likhilā
Translation: In Vṛndāvana, Rūpa Gosvāmī began to write a drama. In particular, he composed the introductory verses to invoke good fortune.
Purport: Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura quotes from the Nāṭaka-candrikā, wherein it is written:
Similarly, in the sixth chapter of the Sāhitya-darpaṇa, text 282, it is said:
The introductory portion of a drama, which is written to invoke good fortune, is called nāndī-śloka.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, the system for writing dramas in Sanskit is very much prescribed and there was a written how the drama is written, and in the beginning you have the nāndī-śloka.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.36
sānuja śrī-rūpera gauḍe yātrā o sūtrākāre nāṭakera pāṇḍulipi racanāḥ—
pathe cali’ āise nāṭakera ghaṭanā bhāvite
kaḍacā kariyā kichu lāgilā likhite
Translation: On his way to Gauḍa-deśa, Rūpa Gosvāmī had been thinking of how to write the action of the drama. Thus he had made some notes and begun to write.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, as Rūpa Gosvāmī was travelling to Gauḍadeśa and Nīlācala he was thinking about this drama and made some notes and he got strategy on how he would present these dramas. Naturally a writer in Kṛṣṇa consciousness tries to think how he would present the pastimes of Supreme Lord
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.37
gauḍe anupamera gaṅgāprāptiḥ—
ei-mate dui bhāi gauḍa-deśe āilā
gauḍe āsi’ anupamera gaṅgā-prāpti hailā
Translation: In this way the two brothers Rūpa and Anupama reached Bengal, but when they arrived there Anupama died.
Purport: Formerly when a person died it was commonly said that he had attained the shelter of mother Ganges, even if he did not die on the bank of the Ganges. It is customary among Hindus to carry a dying person to a nearby bank of the Ganges, for if one dies on the bank of the Ganges, his soul is considered to reach the lotus feet of Lord Viṣṇu, wherefrom the Ganges flows.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, hawk has caught over a snake with a foot over in Ganges and the snake died but its tail hit the Ganges water so the soul in the snake went back to godhead, Jay! Haribol! that’s who Ganges is so powerful. So, if a person leaves the body, it is customary to say that gaṅgā prāpti hoile, he achieved the Ganges means he left the body.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.38
śrī-rūpera purīte prabhu-darśane yātrāḥ—
rūpa-gosāñi prabhu-pāśe karilā gamana
prabhure dekhite tāṅra utkaṇṭhita mana
Translation: Rūpa Gosvāmī then departed to see Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, for he was very eager to see Him.
Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing Lord Caitanya was a natural desire of his devotees. Devotees from Bengal went with Śivānanda Sena to see Lord Caitanya. Rūpa Gosvāmī came from Vṛndāvana, Bengal and now he is going to see Lord Caitanya in Nīlācala.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.39
anupamera gaṅgāprāptihetu vilambavaśataḥ prabhu-darśanārtha gauḍīya-yātrigaṇera sahita śrī-rūpera sākṣātkārera abhāvaḥ—
anupamera lāgi’ tāṅra kichu vilamba ha-ila
bhakta-gaṇa-pāśa āilā, lāg nā pāila
Translation: There was some delay because of the death of Anupama, and therefore when Rūpa Gosvāmī went to Bengal to see the devotees there, he could not get in touch with them because they had already left.
Jayapatākā Swami: Since all the devotees from Bengal had already gone with Advaita Ācārya and Śivānanda Sena to see Lord Caitanya. So Rūpa Gosvāmī decided that he too would go to see Lord Caitanya.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.40
satyabhāmāpure satyabhāmādevīra upadeśa-prāptii lalita-mādhava-racanāra mūla sūtrapātaḥ—
uḍiyā-deśe ‘satyabhāmā-pura’-nāme grāma
eka rātri sei grāme karilā viśrāma
Translation: In the province of Orissa there is a place known as Satyabhāmā-pura. Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī rested for a night in that village on his way to Jagannātha Purī.
Purport: There is a place known as Satyabhāmā-pura in the district of Kaṭaka (Cuttack), in Orissa. It is near the village known as Jānkādei-pura.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, there are many holy places in Jagannātha Purī and Orissa, it is known as Śrī-kṣetra or the holy place of Lakṣmīdevī.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.41
rātre svapne dekhe,—eka divya-rūpā nārī
sammukhe āsiyā ājñā dilā bahu kṛpā kari’
Translation: While resting in Satyabhāmā-pura, he dreamed that a celestially beautiful woman came before him and very mercifully gave him the following order.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.42
“āmāra nāṭaka pṛthak karaha racana
āmāra kṛpāte nāṭaka haibe vilakṣaṇa”
Translation: “Write a separate drama about me,” she said. “By my mercy it will be extraordinarily beautiful.”
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.43
śrī-rūpera mane mane vicāraḥ—
svapna dekhi’ rūpa-gosāñi karilā vicāra
satyabhāmāra ājñā—pṛthak nāṭaka karibāra
Translation: After having that dream, Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī considered, “It is the order of Satyabhāmā that I write a separate drama for her.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, at the time Rūpa Gosvāmī was considering how to write the drama, he stayed in the village in Satyabhāmā-pura, he understood that Satyabhāmā Herself had come to him in his dream and asked him to write a separate drama. We know that Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana is in the mood of a cowherd boy and Kṛṣṇa in Dvārakā is in the mood of kṣatriya. Satyabhāmā asking him to write a separate drama of her and Dvārakā makes sense, because Kṛṣṇa is in a different mood in Vṛndāvana and Dvārakā.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.44
ekatra varṇita vraja-puralīlāra pṛthak nāṭakākāre varṇana-pratijñāḥ—
vraja-pura-līlā ekatra kariyāchi ghaṭanā
dui bhāga kari’ ebe karimu racanā
Translation: “I have brought together in one work all the pastimes performed by Lord Kṛṣṇa in Vṛndāvana and in Dvārakā. Now I shall have to divide them into two dramas.”
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.45
purīte siddhabakula-maṭhe ṭhākura-haridāsera gṛhe upasthiti :—
bhāvite bhāvite śīghra āilā nīlācale
āsi’ uttarilā haridāsa-vāsā-sthale
Translation: Thus absorbed in thought, he quickly reached Jagannātha Purī. When he arrived, he approached the hut of Haridāsa Ṭhākura.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Haridāsa Ṭhākura being in born in a Islamic family didn’t try to enter the temple. Althouch actually Haridāsa Ṭhākura is in the incarnation of Brahmā and Brahmā is inaugaurator of this Jagannātha Purī temple. If they knew who Haridāsa Ṭhākura was, I think they should have invited him to enter the temple.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.46
ṭhākurera snehoktiḥ—
haridāsa-ṭhākura tāṅre bahu-kṛpā kailā
‘tumi āsibe,—more prabhu ye kahilā’
Translation: Out of affectionate love and mercy, Haridāsa Ṭhākura told Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī, “Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu has already informed me that you would come here.”
Jayapatākā Swami: Although Lord Caitanya is playing the part of devotee but still He is actually the Supreme Personality of Godhead and He knew that Rūpa Gosvāmī was coming and He already informed Haridāsa Ṭhākura
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.47
akasmāt haridāsake darśana dite prabhura āgamanaḥ—
‘upala-bhoga’ dekhi’ haridāsere dekhite
pratidina āisena, prabhu āilā ācambite
Translation: After seeing the upala-bhoga ceremony at the Jagannātha temple, Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu would regularly come to see Haridāsa every day. Thus He suddenly arrived there.
Jayapatākā Swami: Although Haridāsa Ṭhākura out of his humility didn’t go to see Jagannātha in the temple, but Lord Caitanya who is non-different from Jagannātha, moving Jagannātha, He went every day to see Haridāsa Ṭhākura. So, He suddenly appeared in Haridāsa Ṭhākura’s house.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.48
śrī-rūpera prabhuke praṇāma o prabhura āliṅganaḥ—
‘rūpa daṇḍavat kare’,—haridāsa kahilā
haridāse mili’ prabhu rūpe āliṅgilā
Translation: When the Lord arrived, Rūpa Gosvāmī immediately offered his obeisances. Haridāsa informed the Lord, “This is Rūpa Gosvāmī offering You obeisances,” and the Lord embraced him.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya playing the part as a devotee, He would embrace the intimate associates and thus benedict them.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.49
paraspara saṁlāpaḥ—
haridāsa-rūpe lañā prabhu vasilā eka-sthāne
kuśala-praśna, iṣṭa-goṣṭhī kailā kata-kṣaṇe
Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu then sat down with Haridāsa and Rūpa Gosvāmī. They inquired from one another about auspicious news and then continued to talk together for some time.
Jayapatākā Swami: Haridāsa Ṭhākura and Rūpa Gosvāmī talking with Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu said that they had iṣṭagoṣṭhī they were speaking about Kṛṣṇa and His topics . So this was the natural inclination of Lord Caitanya and His intimate associates
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.50
sanātanera saṁvāda-jijñāsā o śrī-rūpera sanātanera sahita sākṣātkārābhāva-jñāpanaḥ—
sanātanera vārtā yabe gosāñi puchila
rūpa kahe,—tāra saṅge dekhā nā ha-ila
Translation: When Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu inquired about Sanātana Gosvāmī, Rūpa Gosvāmī replied, “I did not meet him.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.51
tatkāraṇa nirddeśa :—
āmi gaṅgā-pathe āilāṅa, tiṅho rāja-pathe
ataeva āmāra dekhā nahila tāṅra sāthe
Translation: “I came by the path on the bank of the Ganges, whereas Sanātana Gosvāmī came by the public road. Therefore we did not meet.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Sanātana Gosvāmī after meeting Caitanya Mahāprabhu for two months in Benares and getting the blessings of Lord Caitanya he did not feel any danger to come by the public road and that was the direct road to Vṛndāvana, but Rūpa Gosvāmī was going by the Ganges path that was away from the public road.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.52
anupamera gaṅgāprāpti-jñāpana :—
prayāge śuniluṅ,—teṅho gelā vṛndāvane”
anupamera gaṅgā-prāpti kaila nivedane
Translation: “In Prayāga I heard that he had already gone to Vṛndāvana.” Rūpa Gosvāmī next informed the Lord about the death of Anupama.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.53
prabhura prasthāna o saṅgigaṇera sahita śrī-rūpera milanaḥ—
rūpe tāhāṅ vāsā diyā gosāñi calilā
gosāñira saṅgī bhakta rūpere mililā
Translation: After allotting residential quarters there to Rūpa Gosvāmī, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu left. Then all of the Lord’s personal associates met Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī shared this news with Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu after giving him residential quarters left for the ocean and then all the associates of Lord Caitanya had met Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī. Here we see how the associates of the Lord would associate with each other and thus obtain transcendental bliss and by associating with the Lord and His associates. We should, in Upadeśāmṛta, Rūpa Gosvāmī advises that we should associate with the devotees and we should association with non-devotees.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.54
prabhukarttṛka ekadina bhaktagaṇake śrī-rūpera paricaya-pradānaḥ—
āra dina mahāprabhu saba bhakta lañā
rūpe milāilā sabāya kṛpā ta’ kariyā
Translation: On the next day, Caitanya Mahāprabhu again met Rūpa Gosvāmī, and with great mercy the Lord introduced him to all the devotees.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, now that Rūpa Gosvāmī could know all the associates of Lord Caitanya introduced personally by Lord Caitanya. All these devotees could know who Rūpa Gosvāmī was.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 1.55
śrī-rūpakarttṛka sakala bhaktera caraṇa-vandana, sakalera rūpake āliṅganaḥ—
sabāra caraṇa rūpa karilā vandana
kṛpā kari’ rūpe sabe kailā āliṅgana
Translation: Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī offered his respectful obeisances unto the lotus feet of them all, and all the devotees, by their mercy, embraced him.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, we see that when Rūpa Gosvāmī met all the devotees, he offered them his prostrated obeisances and all the devotees embraced him and were very merciful we see that the relationship between the devotees is so loving and we can take the guidance from the dealings of these advanced devotees.
