Lord Caitanya Falls in a Well and Gadādhara Paṇḍita Again Receives Mantra from Premanidhi
Under the Section: The Lord’s Attempt to Go to Vṛndāvana

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.76

puṇḍarīka vyatīta āra sakalerai gauḍe pratyāvarttana:—
ei-mata saba vaiṣṇava gauḍe calilā
vidyānidhi se vatsara nīlādri rahilā

Translation: Finally all the Vaiṣṇavas returned to Bengal, but that year Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi remained at Jagannātha Purī.

Haribol!

Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 16.78

premanidhira gadādharake punar-mantradāna o ‘oḍana-ṣaṣṭhī’ darśana:—
gadādhara-paṇḍite teṅho punaḥ mantra dila

Translation: Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi initiated Gadādhara Paṇḍita for the second time.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.22

prabhura nikaṭa paṇḍita gadādharera punar-dīkṣā-grahaṇa-prasaṅga—
eka-dina gadādhara-deva prabhu-sthāne
kahilena pūrva-mantra-dīkṣāra kāraṇe

Jayapatākā Swami: One day Gadādhara Paṇḍita asked Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu about the initiation mantra he had been given previously.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.23

“iṣṭa-mantra āmi ye kahiluṅ kāro prati
sei haite āmāra nā sphure bhāla mati

Jayapatākā Swami: “So, Gadādhara Paṇḍita said to Lord Caitanya that, “I have given someone my initiation mantra, and from that time, I am not getting taste from chanting it.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.24

sei mantra tumi more kaha punar-bāra
tabe mana-prasannatā haibe āmāra”

Jayapatākā Swami: “Please give me that mantra again, and then my mind will become joyful.”

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhāta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): Mantra refers to the sound vibration by which one can give up thoughts of material enjoyment. If an instructor instructs mantras to a faithless person, his heart becomes polluted. If one loses transcendental knowledge because of bad association, then one must gather it again. Knowing this fact, Śrī Gadādhara Paṇḍita Gosvāmī requested Śrī Gaurasundara to give him reinitiation, but Mahāprabhu told him to receive mantra again from his original guru.

Śrī Gadādhara Paṇḍita’s guru was Śrīla Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi.

Jayapatākā Swami: This principle is very useful, this shows when Gadādhara Prabhu was giving initiation in the presence of His guru, but he initiated someone, and by that he lost the taste. That person he initiated, may be faithless or an offender. But Lord Caitanya told him to hear the mantra again from His own Dīkṣā guru. So, this shows that during the time of Lord Caitanya some of the gurus were initiating in the presence of their spiritual master. So, in this case they could get the mantra again if they somehow lost their taste.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.25

prabhu bale,—“tomāra ye upadeṣṭā āche
sāvadhāna—tathā aparādhī hao pāche

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya said, “You already have a dīkṣā-guru, be careful. Don’t become an offender to your spiritual master.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.26

mantrera ki dāya, prāṇo āmāra tomāra
upadeṣṭā thākite nā haya vyavahāra”

Jayapatākā Swami: What to speak of giving you a mantra, I can give you My life to you. But it would not be proper me to give you the mantra while your spiritual master is alive.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.27

gadādhara bale,—“tiṅho nā āchena ethā
tāna parivarte tumi karāha sarvathā”

Jayapatākā Swami: Gadādhara Paṇḍita said, “He is not here at present, so You can give in his place.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.28

gadādhara-guru vidyānidhira acirei nīlācalāgamana-vārtā antaryāmi-prabhu kartṛka- gadādharera nikaṭa jñāpana—
prabhu bale,—“tomāra ye guru vidyānidhi
anāyāse tomāra miliyā dibe vidhi”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya said, “Your initiating guru Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi will soon meet you by the will of providence.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.29

sarvajña-cūḍāmaṇi—jānena sakala
“vidyānidhi śīghra-gati āsibe utkala

Jayapatākā Swami: The crest jewel of omniscient personalities knew everything. Lord Caitanya said, “Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi will soon arrive in Orissa.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.30

ethāi dekhibā dina-daśera bhitare
āisena kevala āmāre dekhibāre

Jayapatākā Swami: You will meet him here within ten days; he is coming just to see Me.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.31

niravadhi vidyānidhi haya mora mane
bujhilāṅa tumi ākarṣiyā āna tāne”

Jayapatākā Swami: I am always remembering Puṇḍarīka Vidyānidhi. Now I understand that you have attracted him to come here.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.32

prabhu-samīpe gadādharera bhāgavata-pāṭha o prabhura premabhāva—
ei-mata prabhu priya gadādhara-saṅge
tāna mukhe bhāgavata śuni’ thāke raṅge

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way Lord Caitanya, with His dear Gadādhara Prabhu, happily heard Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam from the mouth of Gadādhara Prabhu.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.33

gadādhara paḍena sammukhe bhagavata
śuniñā prakāśe prabhu prema-bhāva yata

Jayapatākā Swami: Whenever Gadādhara Paṇḍita would read the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, in front of Lord Caitanya, Lord Caitanya would manifest various symptoms of ecstatic love.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.34

prahlāda caritra o dhruvera caritra punaḥ punaḥ samanoyoge śravaṇa—
prahlāda-caritra āra dhruvera caritra
śatāvṛtti kariyāśunena sāvahita

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord heard with great attention hundreds of times the glories of Prahlāda Mahārāja and glories of Dhruva Mahārāja.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.35

āra kārye prabhura nāhika avasara
nāma-guṇa balena śunena nirantara

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya, did not have any other work and He was constantly engaged without other activities. He would hear the holy names and qualities of Lord Kṛṣṇa and His devotees constantly.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.36

āra kārye prabhura nāhika avasara

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): Rather than speaking about any other topic, Śrī Gaurasundara always glorified topics regarding the Supreme Lord’s names, forms, qualities, and pastimes as if He had one hundred mouths. He had no time to pay any attention to any subject other than Kṛṣṇa’s names, forms, qualities, associates, characteristics, and pastimes.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this shows how Lord Caitanya was constantly engaged in hearing the topics of Lord Kṛṣṇa and His devotees.
