Hare Kṛṣṇa! Dear Devotees! Today we will continue with the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book, Today's chapter is entitled as:

Advaita Ācārya is Defeated by Lord Caitanya
Under the Section: The Lord’s Attempt to Go to Vṛndāvana

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.4

nyāsirūpe vaikuṇṭha-nāyakera vilāsa—
hena-mate vaikuṇṭha-nāyaka nyāsi-rūpe
viharena bhakta-goṣṭhī laiyā kautuke

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha, in the form of a sannyāsī, enjoyed blissful pastimes with the devotees.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.5

jagannātha-pradakṣiṇa-prasaṅge śrī-advaita o śrī-gaurasundarera rahasya līlā-mukhe anukṣaṇa o kuṣṇānusandhāna-ceṣṭā-śikṣādāna—
eka-dina vasiyā āchena prabhu sukhe
hena-kāle śrī-advaita āila sammukhe

Jayapatākā Swami: One day Lord Caitanya was sitting blissfully, at that time Śrī Advaita Gosāi, He came in front of Him.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.6

vasilena advaita prabhure namaskari’
hāsi’ advaitere jijñāsena gaurahari

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Advaita, He offered His obeisances to Lord Caitanya and sat down. Then Lord Gaurahari smiled and asked something from Advaita Gosāi.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.7

santoṣe balena prabhu, “kahata’ ācārya!
kothā haite āilā, kariyā kon kārya?”

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya said in satisfaction, “O Advaita Ācārya, please tell Me, where have You come from? What were You doing?”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.8

advaita balena,—“dekhilāṅa Jagannātha
tabe āilāṅa ei tomāra sākṣāta”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Advaita Ācārya replied, “I went to see Lord Jagannātha, and then I have come to see You.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.9

prabhu bale,—“jagannātha-śrī-mukha dekhiyā
tabe āra ki karilā, kaha dekhi tāhā”

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya then said, “After seeing the lotus face of Lord Jagannātha, then what else did You do? Please tell me.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.10

advaita balena,—“āge dekhi’ Jagannātha
tabe karilāṅa pradakṣiṇa pāñca sāta”

Jayapatākā Swami: Advaita Ācārya replied, “After seeing Lord Jagannātha, I circumambulated Him five or seven times.”

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura Srila Prabhupada): The procedure for circumambulation is described as follows:

“Chanting Lord Hari’s holy names one should perform circumambulation with devotion. If one is able, he should circumambulate by again and again bowing down with eight parts of the body.”

Regarding the number of circumambulations, in the Nṛsiṁha Purāṇa it is said:

“One should circumambulate Caṇḍī one time, the sun-god seven times, Gaṇeśa three times, Lord Kṛṣṇa four times, and Śiva half a time.”

The glories of circumambulation are described in the Varāha Purāṇa as follows:

“Those whose hearts are filled with devotion as they circumambulate the temple of Lord Viṣṇu do not enter Yamarāja’s city. They go to the place where the saintly devotees go.”

In the Skanda Purāṇa, Cāturmāsya-māhātmya, it is said:

“O best of the brāhmaṇas, a person who circumambulates the temple of Lord Viṣṇu four times attains the result of circumambulating the entire universe filled with moving and unmoving beings. He attains a result better than going on all pilgrimages.”

Skanda Purāṇa also saiys: “A person who with devotion circumambulates the temple of Lord Hari is carried on a swan airplane to Vaikuṇṭha.”

In the Nṛsiṁha Purāṇa it is said:

“O prince, please hear the glorious result attained by a person who once circumambulates the temple of Lord Viṣṇu, the Lord of lords. Such a person attains the result of circumambulating the earth. He goes to Lord Hari.”

It is further stated:

“A person who circumambulates the temple of Śrī Hari as he chants the holy names of Lord Kṛṣṇa or the thousand names of Kṛṣṇa attains the result of circumambulating the earth, which consists of seven islands, or giving the earth in charity.”

“A person who after circumambulating the temple of Śrī Hari one time again circumambulates the temple is not subjected to return to this world of repeated birth and death.”

In the Bṛhan-nāradīya Purāṇa, “O King, a person who circumambulates the temple of Śrī Hari three times becomes free of all sins and he enjoys the post of King Indra.”

In the Nārada Purāṇa, Pradakṣiṇa-māhātmya, in the beginning of Sudharma’s story, it is said:

“Those who devotedly circumambulate the temple of Lord Viṣṇu four times go to the supreme abode, which is situated beyond all other planets. In his previous life as a vulture, Sudharma circumambulated the temple of Lord Kṛṣṇa and thereby attained the highest perfection.”

Prohibitions in the performance of circumambulation are described in the Viṣṇu-smṛti as follows:

“Offering obeisances to Śrī Viṣṇu with only one hand, circumambulating the temple of Śrī Kṛṣṇa only once, and seeing the Deity of Śrī Kṛṣṇa at an improper time destroy one’s previous pious merits.”

It is also said:

“One should not circumambulate the sun-god in a circle like a bumblebee before the temple of Śrī Hari, for then one must turn one’s back to the Deity.”

“Circumambulating the temple of Śrī Hari in these ways is prohibited, for such activities will make one averse to the Lord.”

“One should not circumambulate the sun-god in a circle like a bumblebee before the temple of Śrī Hari, for then one must turn one’s back to the Deity.”

“Offering obeisances to Śrī Viṣṇu with only one hand, circumambulating the temple of Śrī Kṛṣṇa only once, and seeing the Deity of Śrī Kṛṣṇa at an improper time destroy one’s previous pious merits.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, we should circumambulate the temple of Viṣṇu, three or four times.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.11

pradakṣiṇa’śabde prabhura gūḍhahāsya-līlā o advaitera parājaya-varṇana—
‘pradakṣiṇa’ śuni’ prabhu hāsite lāgilā
hāsi’ balena prabhu,—“tumi hārilā hārilā”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, When Lord Caitanya heard the word “circumambulation,” He started to laugh, He laughed and smiled and Lord Caitanya said, “You are defeated! defeated!”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.12

ācāryera kautūhala-līlā—
ācārya balena,—“ki sāmagrī hāribāre
lakṣaṇa dekhāo, tabe jiniha āmāre”

Jayapatākā Swami: Then Advaita Ācārya said, “What have I lost? Give Me evidence, then I can know You have defeated me.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.13

prabhu-kartṛka ācāryera parājayera kāraṇa-vyakhyā—
prabhu bale,—“sāmagrīśunaha hāribāra
tumi ye karilā pradakṣiṇa-vyavahāra

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya said, “Listen, this is what You have lost”. You have said that “You performed circumambulating in a certain way.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.13

pradakṣiṇakāle bhagavānera pṛṣṭhadeśera dike calāya bhagavad-darśane vādhā—
yata-kṣaṇa tumi pṛṣṭhā-digere calilā
tata-kṣaṇa tomāra ye darśana nahilā

Jayapatākā Swami: … as long as You went behind the Lord, circumambulating, You were deprived of the Lord’s darśana.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.15

mahā-bhāgavata-līla prabhura abirāma abicchinnabhāve sarvatra kṛṣṇa-darśana—
āmi yata-kṣaṇa dhari’ dekhi jagannātha
āmāra locana āra nā yāya kothāta

Jayapatākā Swami: “As long as I take darśana of Lord Jagannātha, My eyes do not move anywhere else.

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhāta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): When Śrī Gaurasundara would see Lord Jagannātha, He would simply gaze at the Lord’s face. In his book Kṛṣṇa-karṇāmṛta, Śrī Bilvamaṅgala has described the sweetness of the Lord’s beautiful face. The sweetness of the Lord’s face is superior to the sweetness of His other limbs, and the sweetness of His enchanting smile is superior to the sweetness of His face.

Śrī Gaurasundara has expressed that the Lord’s lotus face, composed of five knowledge-acquiring senses, is more attractive than His other limbs. And the Lord’s smile, which is indicative of His pleasure, stimulates and acknowledges resolute service.

Śrī Advaita Prabhu circumambulated Lord Śrī Jagannātha five to seven times. His object of vision was the body of the Lord, but Śrī Gaurasundara’s object of vision was Lord Jagannātha’s lotus face. Therefore Śrī Gaurasundara defeated Advaita Prabhu in the contest. When one is behind Jagannātha while circumambulating Him, one can see only the back half of His body, but when one sees from the front, he can have eye-to-eye contact.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya was describing how by the darśana of the Lord from the front, He was constantly seeing His lotus face.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.16

ki dakṣiṇe, kibā vāme, kibā pradakṣiṇe
āra nāhi dekhi jagannātha-mukha vine”

Jayapatākā Swami: “Whether right or whether left or while circumambulating, I do not see anything other than the lotus face of Lord Jagannātha.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.17

ācāryera parājaya-svīkāra-līlā-mukhe arcana o kīrtanera (bhajanera) gūḍha marma śikṣādāna—
kara-yoḍa kari’ bale ācārya gosāñi
“e-rūpe sakala hāri tomāra se ṭhāñi

Jayapatākā Swami: Advaita Ācārya Gosāi with folded hands said to Lord Caitanya, “May I always be defeated by You in this way.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.18

gaurasundarai ihāra ekamātra marmajña—
e kathāra adhikārīāra tribhuvane
satya kahilāṅa ei nāhi tomā-vine

Jayapatākā Swami: “There is no one qualified in the three worlds to act like You. I tell You the truth, there is no one like You.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.19

tumi se ihāra prabhu, eka adhikārīe
kathāya tomāre se mātra āmi hāri”

Jayapatākā Swami: “Lord Caitanya You are the one who is qualified You are the one qualified in this manner. Only before You I am defeated in this topic.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.20

vaiṣṇava-vargera santoṣa o maṅgala-kolāhala —
śuniñā hāsena sarva vaiṣṇava-maṇḍala
‘hari’ bali’ uṭhila maṅgala-kolāhala

Jayapatākā Swami: When all the assembled Vaiṣṇavas heard this conversation, they smiled and raised an auspicious tumult by chanting, “Hari! Hari! Hari Bol! Hari Bol!”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 10.21

ei-mata prabhura vicitra sarva-kathā
advaitere ati prīta karena sarvathā

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way, Lord Caitanya’s topics are all amazing. Lord Caitanya always showed great affection for Advaita Ācārya.

So, Lord Caitanya He was showing such affection for Lord Advaita Ācārya and in this way instructed how to see the Lord’s face constantly. So, this particular pastime is mentioned in the Caitanya-bhāgavata. In different scriptures there are different pastimes of the Lord. So, we can understand also how we should circumabulate the temple of Viṣṇu, three or four times. Lord Caitanya He would always be seeing the face of the Lord even while circumambulating, this is His special quality.

Thus ends the chapter entitled, Advaita Ācārya is Defeated by Lord Caitanya
Under the Section: The Lord’s Attempt to Go to Vṛndāvana.
