Under the section, The Lord’s Return to Jagannātha Purī

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.88

Translation: Who can describe how the Lord, the ocean of mercy, gave great mercy to each person? Bṛhaspati cannot describe it, what to speak of others.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.89

Translation: One great, pure soul named Śikhi Māhitī lived in Purī. Receiving mercy, he served Jagannātha.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.90

Translation: His younger brother was named Murārī, and the youngest, a sister, was named Mādhava-devī. She had pure intelligence. They were known as three brothers.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.91

Translation: Murāri and Mādhava-devī were attached to Gauracandra. With fixed, pure intelligence they never forgot him for a moment.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.92

Translation: The Lord, the great ocean of mercy, manifested on earth to distribute prema. Beautiful and attractive, he was the moon who rose in the ocean of Śacī’s womb.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.93

Translation: Kṛṣṇa, the moon of Vṛndāvana, had now risen on earth as the golden moon. The two thought in this way, with continual attraction for the Lord.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.94

Translation: The two made many attempts to worship Gauracandra through their older brother, but he was not interested.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.95

Translation: One day, Śikhi Māhitī fell asleep while thinking of topics spoken by his younger brother. In the last portion of the night, he became disturbed with a dream.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.96

Translation: His brother and sister, devoted to Gauracandra’s lotus feet, woke him up at that time. They noticed he was alarmed in his dream.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.97

Translation: With hairs standing on end because of the vision, his joy doubled. He slowly opened his eyes, which were filled with tears, and saw his brother and sister.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.98

Translation: Seeing the two who had come to wake him up, he embraced them firmly with joy. The two were astonished.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.99

Translation: He said, “O brothers! Hear what I saw in my dream. It is most astonishing. The power of the son of Śacī is immeasurable. Today I have that faith.”

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.100

Translation: “Looking at Jagannātha, Gaurāṅga entered into him and again coming out, gazed at the Deity. He pervaded everywhere.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.101

Translation: “This is astonishing, most astonishing! Even now I see the Lord in that condition. Have my two eyes become bewildered by seeing that great beauty?”

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.102

Translation: “Gaurāṅga, the unlimited ocean of mercy called me, as I stood near the deity and embraced me with his two beautiful, broad, long arms which extended to his knees.”

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.103

Translation: With hairs standing on end, with voice choked in prema, with great longing, while tears flowed from his eyes, he could not help but speak these words.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.104

Translation: Hearing this, with happiness, they told him to go to Mahāprabhu, who was going to see Jagannātha.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.105

Translation: The three, who desired the lotus feet of Gauracandra, then went quickly to see Jagannātha.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.106

Translation: With pleased mind, first the two saw Gaurāṅga near the Jaganmohana hall. In joy their eyes filled with tears.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.107

Translation: Then Śikhi Māhitī saw Gaurāṅga as he had seen him in his dream. Seeing him in that condition, his heart became joyful with prema.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.108

Translation: The merciful Lord said, “You are the older brother of Murāri.” He embraced him with his arms. Śikhi Māhitī’s mind became filled with Gaurāṅga. He became the personification of all happiness.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.109

Translation: From that time, by a particle of fragrance from the Lord’s lotus feet, he forgot everything else. The most fortunate devotee served Gaurāṅga all day long as his worshippable Deity.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.110

Translation: In this way also, the merciful Lord, his heart filled with affection, attracted the devotees of Navadvīpa to Purī.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.111

Translation: There was one great devotee named Mādhava Purī, the embodiment of the rasa of Viṣṇu-bhakti, who appeared on earth before Mahāprabhu.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.112

Translation: Īśvara Purī, who became his disciple, had spotless glory. He was as brilliant as a million suns, was pure, truthful, of pleasing heart, and was deeper than the ocean.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.113

Translation: The avatāra of Śeṣa, personification of bhakti-rasa, he appeared on earth before Mahāprabhu and spread the rules of sannyāsa life.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.114

Translation: The devotee, very dear to the world, named Paramānanda Purī travelled with the Lord in the south. He was very calm, fixed, and the personification of tolerance.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.115

Translation: Wandering about, he came to the bank of the Gaṅgā.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.116

Translation: He arrived with desire at Nāvadvīpa, ornamented with the Lord’s pastimes. Happily he rested at the house of Mahāprabhu.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.117

Translation: Śacī was the mother of the three worlds, tolerant of millions of earths, purer than many Gaṅgās, full of affection and most respectable.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.118

Translation: She was full of devotion, beautiful, loved by all, and sweet. Seeing Paramānanda Purī, she respected him as her son by giving him food.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.119

Translation: On another day, this great soul, staying in Mahāprabhu’s house, went to Ācārya-ratna’s house for food, spreading happiness.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.120

Translation: Another devotee who was a river of prema at the feet of Gaurāṅga, would continually bath in that prema. Internally and externally he became filled with Gaurāṅga’s prema.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.121

Translation: This great devotee was named Kamalānanda. He was dear to the Lord. Kamalānanda went joyfully to see Śacī.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.122

Translation: Seeing Śacī, he then saw Paramānanda Purī. By that, he became very happy.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.123

Translation: Staying in Navadvīpa for some days, they all left. Gadādhara and Jagadānanda also left.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.124

Translation: Eager for the good fortune of seeing Mahāprabhu, Paramānanda Purī, Gadādhara and Jagadānanda arrived at Puri and saw the Lord.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.125

Translation: Paramānanda saw the lotus feet of Mahāprabhu. But Mahāprabhu, the Lord, offered him respects with reverence as an elder.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.126

Translation: Ācārya Vidyānidhi, an ocean of infinite qualities, filled with prema and joy, and Ācārya-ratna, a great worshippable devotee, also went.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.127

Translation: The famous Śivānanda, going with Murārī Gupta, saw the Lord from the first as the personification of all auspiciousness.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.128

Translation: His mind soft with mercy to the fallen, the Lord touched his head with his toe many times and said, “I know you.”

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.129

Translation: The devotee named Rāghava, having accumulated piles of good fortune, having great prema for the Lord, saw the Lord and at that moment, the Lord, tender with mercy, immediately gave him mercy.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.130

Translation: The devotee known as Govinda, endowed with a pure mind, and ocean of good fortune, eternally huge from wandering in many holy places, went to Purī.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.131

Translation: There he saw the merciful Gaurāṅga, the ocean of mercy and became attached to serving his lotus feet constantly.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.132

Translation: From that time onwards, the very fortunate Govinda remained near the Lord’s lotus feet and, having given up all other activities, served him day and night.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.133

Translation: The devotee named Bhavānanda, of pure intelligence, full of good qualities, of good character, ornamented with great happiness, saw the Lord.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.134

Translation: The Lord firmly embraced pure-minded Bhavānanda with his two arms. He told him in a sweet voice, “You are very fortunate. You are the same as Pāṇḍu.”

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.135

Translation: His five sons headed by Rāmānanda, staying by Mahāprabhu’s side, became very dear to the Lord.

Jayapatāka Swami: So, this explanation shows how the Lord was giving His mercy to the different devotees who visited Jagannātha Purī. This shows that the way the Lord’s mercy was flowing.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.136

Translation: Vāṇinātha, a soft devotee, very dear to the Lord, peaceful and a friend to all people, attached to Mahāprabhu’s lotus feet, served him exclusively.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.137

Translation: Puruṣottamācārya, a very intelligent devotee with an attractive nature, hearing of Mahāprabhu’s activities, with effort eagerly came to see him.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.138

Translation: Arriving at Purī, in great bewilderment, he saw the lotus feet of the ocean of mercy, and from the joy of merely seeing the Lord, became completely changed.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.139

Translation: He forgot about his body. Only rasa and happiness could be seen in him. From seeing the Lord of his life, his body became stunned at all times.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.140

Translation: His eyes poured torrents of tears. His body was decorated with goose bumps. His thighs shook intensely and became crooked.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.141

Translation: Seeing the Lord, he was overcome with emotion. He developed emotions like the Lord. The Lord, an ocean of affection, became most tender because of his affectionate nature.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.142

Translation: The tender Lord displayed great sweetness. The ocean of rasa distributed prema constantly to Puruṣottamācārya.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.143

Translation: The greatly fortunate Puruṣottamācārya, the abode of truth, took sannyāsa and became the very form of rasa. He was called Svarūpa Dāmodara.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.144

Translation: Staying near the Lord’s lotus feet constantly, he drank the nectar with thirst. He could not tolerate not seeing the Lord for a moment.

Jayapatāka Swami: So, how Puruṣottamācārya became Svarūpa Dāmodara and how as Svarūpa Dāmodara he was constantly connected with the Lord Gaurāṅga and how he was filled with ecstasy of love for Lord Caitanya is described in these verses.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.145

Translation: Vakreśvara Paṇḍita, was a very sweet devotee. He was an ocean of sweet rasa and condensed bliss at all times. Arriving at Purī and seeing the Lord, he began dancing. He thus became the object of Mahāprabhu’s prema. Gaurāṅga favored him at all times.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.146

Translation: Vāsudeva Datta, the jewel in his dynasty, seeing Gauracandra, immediately took him as his very life and became submerged in an ocean of unlimited affection for him.

Jayapatāka Swami: So, how Vāsudeva Datta accepted Lord Caitanya as his very life and soul is explained here. This how all devotees were transformed by serving Lord Caitanya and serving His lotus feet.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.147

Translation: Bhagavānācārya was a great devotee. Surrendering to Gauracandra, he served Lord Jagannātha constantly.

Caitanya-Carita-Mahā-Kāvya 13.148

Translation: While the Lord lived in Purī, the sound of people arriving spread in all directions. Intelligent Satyarāja, his brothers and sons as well as Raghunandana, Narahari, Mukunda and others had assembled there with longing.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.182

bhakta-vṛndera prabhura pādapadme samāgama—
ei mate nīlācale ye ye bhakta-gaṇa
alpe alpe āsi' hailā sabāra milana

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way different devotees arrived in Nīlācala, little by little they came and met all the other devotees.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.183

ye ye pārṣadera janma utkale hailā
tāṅhārā o alpe alpe āsiyā mililā

Jayapatākā Swami: Those associates of Lord Caitanya, who took their birth in Orissa, they also little by little came in and gradually joined Lord Caitanya.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.184

mililā pradyumna miśra—premera śarīra
paramānanda, rāmānanda—dui mahādhīra

Jayapatākā Swami: Pradyumna Miśra, whose body was filled with love of Kṛṣṇa. Paramānanda and Rāmānanda, were two most sober personalities who all joined Lord Caitanya.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.185

dāmodara paṇḍita, śrī-śaṅkara paṇḍita
kata dine āsiyā hailā upanīta

Jayapatākā Swami: Dāmodara Paṇḍita and Śrī Śaṅkara Paṇḍita also came in a number of days and were present there.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.186

śrī-pradyumna brahmacārīnṛsiṁhera dāsa
yāṅhāra śarīre nṛsiṁhera parakāśa

Jayapatākā Swami: Śrī Pradyumna Brahmacārī was a servitor of Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva. Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva was manifested in his body.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.187

`kīrtane vihare narasiṁha nyāsī-rūpe'
jāniyā rahilā āsi' prabhura samīpe

Jayapatākā Swami: When he understood that Lord Narasiṁha was enjoying kīrtana pastimes in the form of a sannyāsī, understanding this he came and joined Lord Caitanya.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.188

bhagavān ācārya āilā mahāśaya
śravaṇe o yāre nāhi paraśe viṣaya

Jayapatākā Swami: The great personality Bhagavān Ācārya also arrived there. Even hearing the topics of material sense gratification, did not enter.

Purport: Śrī Bhagavān Ācārya would never hear any topics concerning sense gratification. He would hear only topics related to Lord Kṛṣṇa's names, forms, and qualities.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.189

ei-mata yateka sevaka yathā chilāsa
sbei prabhura pārśve āsiyā mililā

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way many servants of the Lord came from various places and they stayed by the side of Lord Caitanya coming there and meeting.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.190

prabhura saṅge bhakta-vṛndera kīrtana-vilāsa—
prabhu dekhi' sabāra haila duḥkha-nāśa
sabe kare prabhu-saṅge kīrtana-vilāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing Lord Caitanya, everyone’s sadness was destroyed. Everybody participated in Lord Caitanya's kīrtana pastimes.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 3.191

sannyāsīra rūpe vaikuṇṭhera adhipati
kīrtana karena sarva bhaktera saṁhati

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord of Vaikuṇṭha, in the form of a sannyāsī, thus performed kīrtana in the association of all His devotees.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā, 10.184

prabhura aikāntika bhakta—(1) rāmabhadra o (2) bhagavān:—
rāmabhadrācārya, āra bhagavān ācāryas
prabhu-pade rahilā duṅhe chāḍi’ sarva kārya

Transaltion: Later, Rāmabhadra Ācārya and Bhagavān Ācārya joined them and, giving up all other responsibilities, remained under Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s shelter.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā, 10.185

kāśīśvarera āgamana :—
kāśīśvara gosāñi āilā āra dine
sammāna kariyā prabhu rākhilā nija sthāne

Translation: The next day, Kāśīśvara Gosāñi also came and remained with Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, who received him with great respect.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā, 10.186

balavān kāśīśvarera prabhu-sevāya balera sadvyavahāra:—
prabhuke lañā karā’na īśvara daraśana
āge loka-bhiḍa saba kari’ nivāraṇa

Translation: Kāśīśvara used to usher Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu into the Jagannātha temple. He would precede the Lord into the crowd and keep the people from touching Him.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā, 10.187

prabhūsaha samagrabhaktera milanera upamā:—
yata nada nadī yaiche samudre milaya
aiche mahāprabhura bhakta yāhāṅ tāhāṅ haya

Translation: As all the rivers flow into the sea, all the devotees throughout the country finally came to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s shelter.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā, 10.188

sabe āsi’ mililā prabhura śrī-caraṇe
prabhu kṛpā kari’ sabāya rākhila nija sthāne

Translation: Since all the devotees came to Him for shelter, Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu showed them all mercy and kept them under His protection.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā, 10.189

prabhu-bhakta-milana-saṁvāda-varṇana-samāpana :—
ei ta’ kahila prabhura vaiṣṇava-milana
ihā yei śune, pāya caitanya-caraṇa

Translation: Thus I have described the meeting of all the Vaiṣṇavas with Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Whoever hears this description ultimately attains shelter at His lotus feet.

Jayapatāka Swami: Lord Caitanya went to Jagannātha Purī, people from Bengal, from Orissa all kinds of devotees, came and took shelter under the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya. Just hearing about this great assembly of Vaiṣṇavas, how they would all serve the Lord and engage in the saṅkīrtana pastimes of the Lord, simply by hearing one will get the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya. Hari Bol!
