Introduction: Today we are continuing with the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book, today’s chapter entitled is:

Maheśvara Takes Shelter of Lord Kṛṣṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: So Lord Caitanya has come from Bengal to Orisa, seeing the Sakshi Gopal Deity in Kutak going to Bhubaneswar, seeing the beautiful Deity of Lord Shiva Ananta-Vasudeva, Bindu-Sarovar, this place is better than Varanasi. Here, eternally, Lord Siva resides with Pārvatī. So, we are hearing some of the glories of Bhuvaneśvara Dhāma and how Lord Siva took shelter of Lord Kṛṣṇa here.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.336

govinda-śaraṇāpanna śiva—

śeṣe śiva bujhilena,—“sudarśana-sthāne
rakṣā karibeka hena nāhi kṛṣṇa vine”

Jayapatākā Swami: Ultimately Lord Śiva realized, that except by the mercy of Kṛṣṇa no one can protect me from Sudarśana.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.337

eteka cintiyā vaiṣṇavāgra trilocana
bhaye trasta hai' gela govinda-śaraṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: By thinking in this way, the three-eyed topmost Vaisnava, Lord Śiva went in fear to take shelter of Lord Govinda.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.338

śaraṇāgata śivera kṛṣṇastuti o aparādha-kṣamā-prārthanā—

“jaya jaya mahāprabhu devakīnandana
jaya sarva-vyāpī sarva jīvera śaraṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: “All glories to the Supreme Lord, the son of Devakī, Devakī-nandana! All glories to the all-pervading Lord and shelter of all living entities!” This was the prayer offered by Lord Śiva and as follows:

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.339

jaya jaya su-buddhi ku-buddhi sarva-dātā
jaya jaya sraṣṭā, harttā, sabāra rakṣitā

Jayapatākā Swami: “All glories, All glories to You, the bestower of both good and bad intelligence! All glories, All glories to You, the creator, maintainer, and destroyer of all!”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.340

jaya jaya adoṣa-daraśi kṛpā-sindhu
jaya jaya santapta-janera eka bandhu

Jayapatākā Swami: “All glories! All glories to You, the ocean of mercy, who does not find faults in others! All glories! All glories to the only friend of all living entities who are suffering!”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.341

jaya jaya aparādha-bhañjana-śaraṇa
doṣa kṣama' prabhu, tora lainu śaraṇa”

Jayapatākā Swami: “All glories, All glories to You, who removes one's offenses and gives one shelter! Please forgive my offense, Oh Lord. I surrender unto You.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.342

śaṅkarera stave harira prasannatā, cakrateja-saṁvaraṇa o darśana-dāna—

śuni' śaṅkarera stava sarva-jīva nātha
cakra-teja nibāriyā hailā sākṣāt

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing the prayers of Śiva-śaṅkara's, the Lord of all living entities, He stopped Sudarśana’s attack and appeared present before him.

So, Kṛṣṇa became present before Lord Śiva and stopped Sudarśana cakra advance.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.343

catur-dike śobhā kare gopa-gopī-gaṇa
kichu krodha-hāsya-mukhe balena vacana

Jayapatākā Swami: Surrounded by all directions beautifully by the cowherd boys and girls, slightly angrily and smiling angry with a smiling face He spoke the following words.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.344

śaṅkarera prati harira anuyoga o upadeśa—/

“kene śiva, tumi ta' jānaha mora śuddhi
eta-kāle tomāra e-mata kene buddhi

Jayapatākā Swami: “Oh Śiva, you certainly know My prowess. How then after all this time how did you develop such an intelligence or mentality?”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.345

kon kīṭa kāśīrāja adhama nṛpati
tāra lāgi' yuddha kara āmāra saṁhati

Jayapatākā Swami: “Who is this fallen king, insignificant insect Kāśirāja? And for him You fought with Me?”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.346

ei ye dekhaha mora cakra sudarśana
tomāre o nā sahe yāhāra parākrama

Jayapatākā Swami: “You saw My Sudarśana cakra, whose prowess even you cannot tolerate.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.347

brahma-astra pāśupata-astra ādi yata
parama avyartha mahā-astra āra kata

Jayapatākā Swami: “The great infallible weapons like the brahmāstra and pāśupatāstra and others other weapons that may exist.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.348

sudarśana-sthāne kāro nāhi pratikāra
yāra astra tāre cāhe karite saṁhāra

Jayapatākā Swami: have no response and are powerless before Sudarśana. When such weapons are defeated, they want to kill their creator or wielder.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.349

hena ta' nā dekhi āmi saṁsāra-bhitara
tomā'-bai ye āmāre kare anādara”

Jayapatākā Swami: “It appears to me that within this whole material world, there is no one who disrespects Me more than you.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.350

śuniyā prabhura kichu sakrodha uttara
antare kampita baḍa hailāśaṅkara

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing the Supreme Lord's slightly angry words, Lord Śiva Śaṅkara was trembling within, in fear.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.351

śivera ātma-nivedana o nija asvatantratā-jñāpana—

tabe śeṣe dhariyā prabhura śrī-caraṇa
karite lāgila śiva ātma-nivedana

Jayapatākā Swami: Then finally, Lord Śiva grabbed hold of the Supreme Lord's lotus feet and began to speak with full self-surrender.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.352

“tomāra adhīna prabhu, sakala saṁsāra
svatantra haite śakti āchaye kāhāra

Jayapatākā Swami: “The whole material world, is under Your control, O Supreme Lord. Who has the power to become independent?”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.353

pavane cālāya yena sūkṣma tṛṇa-gaṇa
ei mata asvatantra sakala bhuvana

Jayapatākā Swami: All the people of the entire universe are controlled by You, My Lord, just as dry grass is carried by the wind.

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (10.63.44) it is stated: taṁ tvā jagat-sthity-udayānta-hetuṁ samaṁ prasāntaṁ suhṛd-ātma-daivam ananyam ekaṁ jagad-ātma-ketaṁ bhavāpavargāya bhajāma devam “Let us worship You, the Supreme Lord, to be freed from material life. You are the maintainer of the universe and the cause of its creation and demise. Equipoised and perfectly at peace, You are the true friend, Self, and worshipable Lord. You are one without a second, the shelter of all the worlds and all souls.” One should also discuss the Mahābhārata, Śānti-parva, Chapter 43, verse 16 and Anuśāsana-parva, Chapters 147-148. In the Kaṭha Upaniṣad (2.2.8 and 2.3.1) it is stated: tasmin lokāḥśritāḥ sarve tad u nātyeti kaścana —“In Him all the worlds are situated. No one can surpass Him.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Śiva, He is expressing His realization that Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme one without the second.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.354

ye karāha prabhu, tumi se-i jīve kare
hena kebā āche ye tomāra māyā tare

Jayapatākā Swami: “O my Lord, whatever You do, living entity acts in that way. Who is that person who has the power to surpass Your illusory energy?”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.355

viśeṣe diyācha prabhu, more ahaṅkāra
āpanāre baḍa bai nāhi dekhoṅāra

Jayapatākā Swami: “O My Lord, somehow or other You have given me, my quality of false ego, and as a result I don’t see anyone superior to myself.”

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): False ego is produced from the mode of ignorance. By the will of the Supreme Lord, the guṇa-avatāra Mahādeva is invested with the power of destruction. Therefore, the unauthorized philosophies propounded by the impersonalist Kāśirāja, the commentator Śrīkaṇṭha, who was a follower of the śaiva-viśiṣṭādvaita philosophy, and other impersonalists like Apyayi Dīkṣita have been completely refuted in the Śruta-prakāśikā commentary on Śrī-bhāṣya by Śrī Sudarśanācārya, the servant of Śrī Rāmānuja. Yet while raising its head later on the philosophy of śaiva-viśiṣṭādvaita was out of misfortune smashed into pieces by the weapon of Sudarśana in the form of the śuddha-viśiṣṭādvaita philosophy.

māyāvādam asac-chāstraṁ pracchannaṁ bauddham ucyate
mayaiva vihitaṁ devi kalau brāhmaṇa-mūrtinā

“In the Age of Kali I take the form of a brāhmaṇa and explain the Vedas through false scriptures in an atheistic way, similar to Buddhist philosophy.”

The activities mentioned in this verse describe the mission of the predominating deity of the false ego. But Śrī Viṣṇusvāmī, who was engaged in the service of the Supreme Lord, took shelter at the lotus feet of Śrī Rudra, his spiritual master, in such a way that he restored the spiritual ego in place of all forms of mundane false ego.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, on the order of Lord Kṛṣṇa, Lord Śiva took the form of brāhmaṇa and spread the impersonalist philosophy but the same Lord Śiva, he instructed and empowered the Viṣṇusvāmī, who was propagating the philosophy which defeated the impersonalist philosophy of Śankarācārya. So, he established the real ego of the spirit soul as the servitor of Lord Kṛṣṇa. Then the false ego or body that is serving the illusory energy.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.356

tomāra māyāya more karāya durgati
ki karimu prabhu, muñi asvatantra mati

Jayapatākā Swami: “Your illusory energy bewilders me and makes me to make mistakes. My dear Lord, what shall I do? I have no independent intelligence and mentality.”

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): It is stated: māyādhīśa’ ‘māyā-vaśa ——īśvare-jīve bheda — “The Lord is the master of the potencies, and the living entity is the servant of them. That is the difference between the Lord and the living entity.” Therefore, even though Lord Śiva is addressed by the name Bhagavān, he is a subordinate devotee of the eternal Lord Viṣṇu.

Jayapatākā Swami: This pastime has established the actual position of Lord Śiva in relation to Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.357

tora pāda-padma mora ekānta jīvana
araṇye thākiba cinti' tomāra caraṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: “Your lotus feet are my only life and soul. I will live in the forest and simply remember Your lotus feet.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.358

tathāpiha more se laoyāo ahaṅkāra
muñi ki kariba prabhu, ye icchā tomāra

Jayapatākā Swami: “Still You invest me always with false ego. What can I do, O my dear Lord, what You desire happens!”

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (2.10.12) it is stated:

dravyaṁ karma ca kālaś ca svabhāvo jīva eva ca
yad-anugrahataḥ santi na santi yad-upekṣayā

“One should definitely know that all material ingredients, activities, time and modes, and the living entities who are meant to enjoy them all, exist by His mercy only, and as soon as He does not care for them, everything becomes nonexistent.”

And in the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (10.88.3) it is stated:

śivaḥ śakti-yutaḥ śaśvat tri-liṅgo guṇa-saṁvṛtaḥ
vaikārikas taijasaś ca tāmasaś cety ahaṁ tridhā

“Lord Śiva is always united with his personal energy, the material nature. Manifesting himself in three features in response to the entreaties of nature's three modes, he thus embodies the threefold principle of material ego in goodness, passion, and ignorance.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So now Lord Śiva is begging for forgiveness.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.359

kṣamā-bhikṣā—

 tathāpiha prabhu, muñi kailuṅ aparādha
sakala kṣamiyā more karaha prasāda

Jayapatākā Swami: “Although My Lord, I have committed an offense. Please forgive me for all my offenses and bestow Your mercy on me.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.360

e-mata kubuddhi mora yena āra nahe
ei vara deha' prabhu haiyā sadaye

Jayapatākā Swami: “O My Lord, please kindly have Your mercy on me and kindly give me the benediction so I may never develop the evil mentality again.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.361

yena aparādha kailuṅ kari' ahaṅkāra
haila tāhāra śāsti, śeṣa nāhi āra

Jayapatākā Swami: “I did an offense due to my false ego and I have been punished appropriately for that.”

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.362

niveditātma-śivera prabhura ājñānusārī basati-prārthanā—

ebe ājñā kara prabhu, thākimu kothāya
tomā'—bai āra vā baliba kāra pāya”

Jayapatākā Swami: “Please My Lord, please give me the instruction, where should I stay? Other than you, unto whose lotus feet can feet can I appeal?” So, Lord Śiva, he was surrendering at the lotus feet of Lord Kṛṣṇa, grabbing on Kṛṣṇa lotus feet begging that please have mercy on him so that he may not develop this evil mentality again.

Thus, ends the chapter entitled Maheśvara Takes Shelter of Lord Kṛṣṇa

So, we see how Lord Siva has commited offenses due to false ego, and he feel at the Lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa and begged for mercy So now, we have commmited offenses to the nature now the system of sacrifice is to surrender to Kṛṣṇa and chant His Holy Name. if people don't like to chant His Name in Sanskrit they can chant in whatever language their scripture is written in any bonafide name of God but the principle is that, if we ever comitt an offense, we should beg for the mercy of the supreme Lord.
