Introduction: Today we are continuing with the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book, today’s chapter entitled is:

Part two of Darśana of Mahādeva in Bhuvaneśvara

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.8.5

Millions of brilliant palaces shone, enriched with beautiful archways, and crested by bright waving flags, wherein men adorned with pearls and enhanced with pleasing scents endeavor to attain the post of Indra.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.8.6

In that region are million tīrthas, headed by Maṇi-karṇikā. By leaving the body here, one obtains bhakti or mukti which the yogīs usually obtain after four ages by practicing severe yogic disciplines.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.8.7

There was also the vast lake Bindu-sarovara, so named because the best among the gods had placed within it bindus, drops of water gathered from all the tīrthas. Simply by bathing in that lake, one also obtains the transcendentally pure destination of the Lord's lotus feet.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 16.84

mahā-bindusarovare sarva-tīrthe jale
āra nānā puṇya-tīrtha baisaye nagare

Jayapatākā Swami: The waters from of all holy tīrthas rest in the great Bindu-sarovara lake. There are many different holy places also reside in that city.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.309

bindu-sarovare—

`śiva-priya sarovara' jāni śrī-caitanya
snāna kari' viśeṣe karilā ati dhanya

Jayapatākā Swami: Understanding that the lake of Bindu-sarovar was dear to Lord Śiva, Lord Śrī Caitanya eagerly took His bath therein and made that lake more glorious. So I bathed in that lake and seeing that was not only drops of all the holy tīrthas was also blessed with the waters of the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya. So it makes it more sacred and even more glorious.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.310

dekhilena giyā prabhu prakaṭa śaṅkara
catur-dige śiva-dhvani kare anucara

Jayapatākā Swami: Thereafter the Lord Caitanya went to see the manifestation of Lord Śiva Śaṅkara, whose followers were glorifying him in all the four directions.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.311

catur-dige sāri sāri ghṛta-dīpa jvale
niravadhi abhiṣeka haiteche jale

Jayapatākā Swami: Lightning the ghee lamps in rows burning in the four directions, and the Śiva-liṅga was being bathed continuously with abhiṣeka water.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.312

nija-priya-śaṅkarera dekhiyā vibhava
tuṣṭa hailena prabhu, sakala vaiṣṇava

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord Caitanya and all the Vaiṣṇavas were pleased to see the influence of the Lord's dear devotee Śiva Śaṅkara. The Lord was satisfied and also all the Vaiṣṇavas.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 16.85

purī praveśiyā dekhe pārvatī-śaṅkara
namaskāra kari’ prabhu premāya bibhora

Jayapatākā Swami: Bhuvaneśvara which is considered as the part of Purī district. There Lord Caitanya entering the temple, saw the deity Śiva and Pārvatī. Offering his obeisances Lord Caitanya, was overwhelmed with ecstatic spiritual love.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 16.86

sarvajana dekhila se pārvatī maheśa
liṅga-darśane sabhāra khaṇḍileka kleśa

Jayapatākā Swami: All the people who sees the liṅga of Śiva and Parvatī, by seeing the Śiva-liṅga, darśana, all their sufferings are crushed to pieces.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.313

śrī-kṛṣṇa-caraṇa-rasonmatta śivera agre nṛtya—

ye caraṇa-rase śiva vasana nā jāne
hena prabhu nṛtya kare śiva-vidyamāne

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Śiva forgets to dress in being absorbed in transcendental mellows of service of the lotus feet of that Supreme Lord. that Supreme Lord was dancing in front of Lord Śiva

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa 16.87

maheśa dekhiyā prabhura avaśa śarīra
ṭalamala kare tanu–nāhi rahe sthira

Jayapatākā Swami: When Lord Caitanya saw the deity of Maheśa, He was overwhelmed with ecstasy. His body trembled. He could not remain peaceful.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.314

tatpurīte rātri-yāpana—

nṛtya-gīta śiva-agre kariyā ānanda
se rātri rahilā sei grāme gauracandra

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gauracandra chanted and danced before Lord Śiva in great ecstasy and He remained in that village that night.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.8.8

Suddenly giving up His residence in the city of Kāśī, the venerable Maheśa, whose power is fully free of mundane inebriety, has taken residence in that excellent place of Ekāmraka, where He has summoned and established all the holy places.

Jayapatākā Swami: So all the holy places are assembled in the Bindu-sarovar and there on eastern bank is the Ananta Vāsudeva temple, who is non-different from Lord Jagannātha Purī. So He will take the prasāda of Lord Jagannātha, Ananta Vāsudeva everyday.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.8.9

That very lord, dressed in tiger-skin, who expands in the form of his liṅgam, enjoys limitless divine delights in the company of goddess Īśvarī. Yet he is earnestly offered praise by the best of renunciants who are fully detached from the pleasures of the senses.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.8.10

His body was completely decorated with fragrant flower garlands, and he was surrounded by rows of luminous moon-like lamps. The atmosphere was enhanced by the sounds of mṛdaṅga and conch, and goddesses danced superbly with great devotion.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the Lord Śiva was worshipped by all the renunciants and the goddess so He is transcendental to anything material yet He worships Lord Kṛṣṇa and he is always chanting the names of Rāma so he is accepted as the greatest of all the Vaisnavaṣ In Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, there is verse which says vaiṣṇavānām yathā śaṁbhuḥ, Lord Śiva is best of all the Vaisnavas.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 3.8.11

Surrounded by His servants, the Supreme Lord Gaura Hari entered the house of Purāri, whose form emanated white rays of nectar like the moon, in the same way that Lord Brahmā, who resembles a bee at the lotus feet of Kṛṣṇa, once entered the festival-enlivened abode of mighty Indra-deva.

Śrī Śrīmad Gaurāṅga-līlā-smaraṇa-maṅgala-stotram [40]

Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhakura: In the forest of Ekāmra He offered obeisances to a śiva-liṅga. When He went to the auspicious town of Kāpotaka and set down His daṇḍa, Nityānanda broke it. I meditate on Lord Gaurāṅga, who is disguised as a human being and who is a devotee of His devotees.

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya as a devotee, He came and said that He is the servant of the servant of the servant of the master of the gopīs, gopī-bhartur pāda-kamalayor dāsa-dāsanudāsa. So, although He is the Supreme Lord, taking the role of a Vaiṣṇava, He is the devotee of the devotee. Therefore, since Lord Śiva is his devotee, he also worships Lord Śiva. He danced and chanted Hare Kṛṣṇa in the temple of Lord Śiva.

Thus ends the chapter entitled Darśana of Mahādeva in Bhuvaneśvara, Ekāmra-kānana (Bhuvaneśvara)

In some Purāṇas Bhuvaneśvara is said to be the Ekāmra-sthāna or Ekāmra-kānana since there was gigantic mango tree which spreads out for two miles and in ancient India it was known by that name Ekāmra-kānana, a forest of one mango tree, normally a forest has many trees but this tree was so big that one tree was enough to fill up the whole forest. Today when we go to Bhuvaneśvara we see the temple of Lord Śiva and the temple of Ananta Vāsudeva, Bindu-sarovar and see the Kedāra-Gaurī but we don’t see the mango tree anymore but it was there at one time.
