Introduction: Today we are continuing with Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book compilation, todays chapter entitled is:

Jaleśvara Śiva Made Happy by the Dance of the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha
[
and: Lord Nityānanda is Embarrassed to Hear Being Glorified]

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.238

jaleśvara pūjite āchena vipra-gaṇe
gandha-puṣpa-dhūpa-dīpa-mālā-vibhūṣaṇe

Jayapatākā Swami: Jaleśvara Śiva is worshiped by the brāhmaṇa priests who were engaged in offering sandalwood paste, flowers, incense, ghee lamps, garlands, and ornaments.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.239

bahuvidha vādya uṭhiyāche kolāhala
catur-dige nṛtya-gīta parama maṅgala

Jayapatākā Swami: Various musical instruments produced a tumultuous vibration from all directions, with the dancing and singing was supremely auspicious.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.240

dekhi' prabhu krodhe pāsarilena santoṣe
sei vādye prabhu miśāilā prema-rase

Jayapatākā Swami: On seeing this, the Lord Caitanya forgot His anger and became satisfied. Lord Caitanya became absorbed in the vibration of the musical instruments; He became absorbed in the mellows of ecstatic spiritual love.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.241

nija priya saṅkarera vibhava dekhiyā
nṛtya kare gauracandra parānanda hañā

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing the opulence of His dear devotee Lord Śiva Śaṅkara, Lord Gauracandra, He began to dance in transcendental ecstasy.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.242

kṛṣṇapriyatama śambhuke laṅghana śrī-caitanya-pathānu-saraṇakārī vaiṣṇavara kṛtya nahe—

śivera gaurava bujhāyena gauracandra
eteke śaṅkara-priya sarva bhakta-vṛnda

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): Lord Gauracandra in this way revealed the glories of Lord Śiva. That is why Śiva is dear to all the devotees and devotees are dear to Śaṅkara Śiva.

In the Mahābhārata (Bhīṣma-parva 5.12) it is stated:

“That which is transcendental to material nature is called inconceivable.”

In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (12.13.16) it is stated:

“Just as the Gaṅgā is the greatest of all rivers, Lord Acyuta the supreme among deities, and Lord Śambhu [Śiva] the greatest of Vaiṣṇavas, so Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam is the greatest of all Purāṇas.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So Śiva-śambhuḥ is also described by the verse

nimna-gānāṁ yathā gaṅgā
devānām acyuto yathā
vaiṣṇavānāṁ yathā śambhuḥ
purāṇānām idam tathā
vaiṣṇavānāṁ yathā śambhuḥ

Jayapatākā Swami: He is greatest of all Vaiṣṇavas so the devotees should be very careful not to offend Lord Śiva, actually materialist may worship Lord Śiva for getting their material objectives, but Lord Śiva Himself is the greatest of all Vaiṣṇavas.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.243

nā māne caitanya-patha bolāya `vaiṣṇava'
śivere amānya kare vyartha tāra saba

Jayapatākā Swami: Those who do not follow the path of Lord Caitanya and proclaim himself as a Vaiṣṇava and then he disrespects Lord Śiva his efforts are all useless. Sometimes devotees offend Lord Śiva or his family members, Mother Durgā, Gaṇeśa and Kārtikeya, they don’t realise these are all devotees and those people who worship them as independent Lord some of them may be demons or others, but these are all devotees Śiva, Durgā, Gaṇeśa and Kārtikeya they are all Vaiṣṇavas. We should be very careful not to offend them.

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): Those who disrespect the guṇa-avatāra Mahādeva do not actually follow Śrī Caitanya. Śrī Rāmānuja preached unalloyed Vaiṣṇava-dharma four hundred years before the advent of Śrī Caitanya. Those who synthesize matter and spirit try hard to equate the guṇa-avatāras with Vāsudeva Viṣṇu. As a result, they commit offenses at the feet of the Supreme Lord. To release such people from their offenses, Śrī Lakṣmaṇa-deśika vigorously and single-handedly preached the topics of devotional service to Viṣṇu. Veteran Vaiṣṇavas headed by Śrī Anandatīrtha worshiped the guṇa-avatāras Brahmā and Śiva as devotees of the Supreme Lord.

Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya visited the temple of Śiva, the incarnation of a devotee, and prayed for devotional service to Kṛṣṇa. But if Mahādeva, the best of the devotees, is disrespected on the basis of the unalloyed principles of Śrī Rāmānuja by those who are subservient to Śrī Caitanya, then because of exhibiting envy of a devotee, pure devotees headed by the author become angry at such envious people. They disrespect Lord Śiva's position as the supreme Vaiṣṇava, which is substantiated as follows: śiva-viriñci-nutaṁśaraṇyam—“The Supreme Lord is honored by powerful demigods like Lord Śiva and Lord Brahmā;” dāsāste hara-nārada-prabhṛtayaḥ— “Personalities like Śiva and Nārada are His servants;” Vaiṣṇavānāṁ yathāśambhuḥ — “Śambhu, Lord Śiva, is the greatest of all devotees of Lord Viṣṇu;” Śiva is the best among the twelve Vaiṣṇava authorities; and he is the original spiritual master of the Viṣṇusvāmī sampradāya. Furthermore, those people think that since the Liṅgayet community or the worshipers of Śiva unnecessarily attack Vaiṣṇavas, when the Vaiṣṇavas go to see Lord Śiva at a Śiva temple where Śaivites are engaged in his worship, they have lost the association of sādhus who are svajātīyāśaya-snigdhaor “pleasing to the same class of people.” The followers of Śrī Caitanya do not think like this.

In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (4.24.28) Lord Śiva speaks the following words: “Any person who is surrendered to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Kṛṣṇa, the controller of everything—material nature as well as the living entity—is actually very dear to me.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So the devotees of Lord Kṛṣṇa are very dear to Lord Śiva and Lord Śiva is very dear to the devotees of Viṣṇu because He is the topmost devotee. So we should avoid any offense to Lord Śiva. That is the first offense, in the ten offences to the holy name, - to offend the devotees of Kṛṣṇa. Lord Śiva is the greatest devotee. So, in that way we may see Lord Śiva differently from the other worshipers of Lord Śiva. In the temple of Viṣṇu in Mahābalipuram, there is also a Śiva deity. They offer all the prasāda of Lord Viṣṇu to Lord Śiva. Lord Caitanya, when He was a gṛhastha, He used to offer prasāda to Lord Viśvaksena, Lord Śiva and others, one percent.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.244

karite āwchena nṛtya jagat-jīvana
parvata vidare hena huṅkāra garjana

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the life and soul of the universe, continuously danced, and He roared so loudly, it appeared as though mountains could be broken, asunder, broken to pieces.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.245

śaivagaṇera vismaya—
dekhi' śiva-dāsa saba hailā vismita
sabei balena,—“śiva hailā vidita”

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing Lord Caitanya dancing in this way, the servants of Lord Śiva, they were all struck with wonder. And they said, “Lord Śiva has appeared.” So, within Lord Caitanya are all the avatāras.

So Lord Śiva is a guṇa-avatāra is also within Lord Caitanya, and the realization of Lord Śiva’s devotees is not wrong.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.246

ānande adhika sabe kare gīta-vādya
prabhu o nācena tilārdheka nāhi bāhya

Jayapatākā Swami: They blissfully sang and played the musical instruments, with increased enthusiasm. Lord Caitanya danced, without the least external consciousness.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.247

paścādvarti-bhaktagaṇa-saha milana o mukundera kīrtane prabhura adhikatara ānanda-nṛtya o premāśru-prabāha—

kata-kṣaṇe bhakta-gaṇa āsiyā mililā
āsiyāi mukundādi gāite lāgilā

Jayapatākā Swami: In a short time, devotees came and joined Lord Caitanya there. Mukunda Datta and others immediately began to sing.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.248

priya-gaṇa dekhi' prabhu adhika ānande
nācite lāgilā, veḍi' gāya bhakta-vṛnde

Jayapatākā Swami: When Lord Caitanya saw His dear associates, His transcendental ecstasy increased. He danced with increased ecstasy, and the devotees sang around Him. First Lord Caitanya was dancing alone, with the devotees of Lord Śiva and then later His associates caught up with Him, and also began to sing and dance around Him. And then Lord Caitanya seeing His dear associates, began to dance more enthusiastically. So, there was a great Harināma saṅkīrtana.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.249

se vikāra kahite vāśakti āche kāra
nayane vahaye suradhunī-śata-dhāra

Jayapatākā Swami: Who has the power to describe Lord Caitanya’s transformations of bliss? Tears flowed from His eyes like hundreds of streams of the sacred Ganges.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.250

etadine gaurapada-dhulite śivapurīra sārthakatā—
ebe se śivera pura haila saphala
yāhe nṛtya kare vaikuṇṭhera adhīśvara

Jayapatākā Swami: Now that abode of Lord Śiva became fulfilled, when the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha, Lord Caitanya, danced there.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.251

kata-kṣaṇe prabhu parānanda prakāśi
yāsthira hailena tabe priya-goṣṭhī lañā

Jayapatākā Swami: After manifesting transcendental ecstasy for some time, Lord Caitanya became steady, and then took His dear associates to the side.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.252

sabā'-prati karilena prema āliṅgana
sabe hailā nirbhara paramānanda mana

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya lovingly embraced each one of them, and their hearts became filled with transcendental bliss. So, Lord Caitanya had forgotten His anger and was blissfully engaging His devotees.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.253

nityānandera prati gaurahari—
nityānanda dekhi' prabhu lailena kole
balite lāgilā tāṅre kichu kutūhale

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing Lord Nityānanda, Lord Caitanya embraced Him. He began to speak to Him in a happy mood.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.254

“kothā tumi āmāre karibā samvaraṇa
ye-mate āmāra haya sannyāsa-rakṣaṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: “You are supposed to guide Me so that I may maintain My sannyāsa. So that My sannyāsa vows are protected.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.255

āro āmā' pāgala karite tumi cāo
āra yadi kara' tabe mora māthā khāo

Jayapatākā Swami: “Instead You want to make Me a crazy man. If You continue in this way, you will ruin Me.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.256

yena kara tumi āmā' tena āmi hai
satya satya ei āmi sabā'-sthāne kai”

Jayapatākā Swami: Whatever You want, whatever You make of Me, I become like that. I confirm, it is true, it is true! This I tell in the presence of everyone.”

Purport (by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura): In whatever form Śrī Nityānanda wishes to adorn Śrī Gaurasundara, the Lord accepts that form. There is no difference between the hearts of Śrī Gaurasundara and Śrī Nityānanda. They both accepted the form of devotees and engaged in relishing and preaching love of Kṛṣṇa.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this shows the special significance of the avatāras – Nitāi-Gaura. They are themselves the Supreme Lords, but They have descended as devotees, to relish serving Kṛṣṇa in love, relish preaching the glories of Kṛṣṇa. So, by following Nitāi-Gaura, we will all get this supreme bliss. The path to glorify Kṛṣṇa, engage in bhakti-yoga, is open to everyone, that is the special mercy of Nitāi-Gaura.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.257

śrī-gauracandrera sakalake śrī-nityānandera prati satarka haibāra janya śikṣā-dāna-līlā—

sabāre śikhāya gauracandra bhagavān
“nityānanda-prati sabe hao sāvadhāna

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gauracandra Bhagavān, He taught everyone, you should be all most respectful to Lord Nityānanda. So, Lord Caitanya taught that everyone should be respectful to Lord Nityānanda. Lord Nityānanda is also the Supreme Lord, come as a devotee.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.258

mora deha haite nityānanda-deha baḍa
satya satya sabāre kahinu ei daḍha

Jayapatākā Swami: “Lord Nityānanda’s transcendental form is more important than My own. Satya! Satya! I confirm this is true! I say this to everyone, most emphatically.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.259

nityānanda-sthāne yāra haya aparādha
mora doṣa nāhi tāra prema-bhakti-vādha

Jayapatākā Swami: “If one commits an offence at the lotus feet of Lord Nityānanda, I am not responsible for the obstacles one finds in the attainment of ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.260

nityānande yāhāra tileka dveṣa rahe
bhakta haile o se āmāra priya nahe”

Jayapatākā Swami: “If one has the slightest envy for Lord Nityānanda, even if he is a devotee, he is not dear to Me.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.261

ātma-stuti śuni' nityānanda mahāśaya
lajjāya rahilā prabhu māthā nā tolaya

Jayapatākā Swami: When Lord Nityānanda Mahāśaya, heard the glorification of Himself, He felt embarrassed and hung His head down, and did not raise it.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 2.262

parama ānanda hailā sarva bhakta-gaṇa
hena līlā kare prabhu śrī-śacīnandana

Jayapatākā Swami: Haribol! All the devotees, however, became transcendentally blissful. Such are the pleasing pastimes of Lord Śrī Śacīnandana. So Lord Caitanya had such blissful pastimes when He was glorifying His devotees

Thus Ends the Chapter, Lord Nityānanda is Embarrassed to Hear Being Glorified (and) Jaleśvara Śiva Made Happy by the Dance of the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha
