Introduction: Today is the day of the Pānihāṭi ciḍā-dadhi festival. The Deities had their lunch according to the līlā of Lord Nityānanda, flat rice, yoghurt and different preparations of ciḍā-dadhi. Here we had a variety of preparations, the Pañca-tattva mahā-bhoga, which had fruits from East and West. The traditional Pānihāṭi, all the fruits of the area, dry fruits, and there was a special Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura bhoga mainly with lychees. There was a Nitāi-Gaura Naṭarāja, just as Nitāi-Gaura the king of dancers. So, Their mahā-bhoga was the king of fruits, the mango. Then there was a special Nitāi-Gaura Madhusmita, the Sweet Smile of Nitāi-Gaura mahā-bhoga, which was mainly the sweet jackfruit, and sweet bananas. Like that we had, the Mādhavendra Purī mahā-bhoga, which was all roots, salty preparation, and we had two South Indian mahā-bhogas, one Bengali mahā-bhoga, one Italian salad. So, we had various kinds of salty preparations, also the gurukula students and Mahāraja [Bhakti Ārjava Prīti-vardhana Swami] offered some preparations. So, there was a lot of enthusiasm, the devotees had darśana of the Deities, maintaining the social distancing, wearing masks, sanitizing their hands. But for the first time in 72 days, they were allowed to see the Deities, personally.
We thank all the devotees who have sent their contribution in for Māyāpur and the food distribution and the ciḍā-dadhi festival. Since we are in this Covid-19 pandemic, outside people are still not allowed to come in, and even when they will be allowed, only a limited number will be allowed. So gradually, the government is easing out the lockdown. But it will be many months, before we get back to normal situation. I thank all the devotees who are helping us to cross over this difficult time.
So here we know that by the mercy of Lord Nityānanda, Dāsa Raghunātha achieved the lotus feet of Lord Caitanya. He was assigned also, as a personal secretary of Lord Caitanya, He was assisting Śvarūpa Dāmodara Prabhu and so he got a lot of mercy from Lord Caitanya. We hope that all those devotees who participated in the flat rice festival will also have this special mercy of Lord Caitanya and Lord Nityānanda. Haribol! Vande rūpa-sanātanau raghu-yugau śrī-jīva-gopālakau, Dāsa Raghunātha became one of the six Gosvāmīs of Vṛndāvana, you can say that the turning point was his engaging in this personal service of the Ciḍā-dadhi festival, to Lord Nityānanda.
We will continue reading about Lord Caitanya going to the house of the Chand Kazi. When He reached the house, some of the Chand Kazi’s workers, soldiers, who had earlier beaten and persecuted the Hindus, they tore off their turbans and jumped amongst the devotees, raising their arms, jumping up and down, chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, so that they wouldn’t be noticed. They were so afraid of the large crowd that had gathered there, and Lord Gaurāṅga was very angry that why they had persecuted the devotees who were chanting the holy name. This is the situation, today’s chapter is:
Devotees Pacify Lord Gaurāṅga’s Anger
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.387

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord said in great anger, “Where is that fellow? that Chand Kazi? Bring him now! I will cut off his head.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.389

Jayapatākā Swami: The Supersoul of all living entities is Śrī Śacīnandana, the son of mother Śacī, who is capable of transgressing His orders?
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.392
prabhu-ādeśe sakale kājīra gṛhera dvāre nānārupa atyācāra—

Jayapatākā Swami: All the people were greatly intoxicated, with ecstatic love for Lord Caitanya. On the order of the Lord, they entered into the house of the Chand Kazi.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.393
keha ghara bhāṅge, keha bhāṅgena duyāra
keha lāthi māre, keha karaye huṅkāra
Jayapatākā Swami: Some broke the house, some broke the doors, some kicked the house, and some roared loudly.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.395
puṣpera udyāne lakṣa lakṣa loka giyāu
pāḍiyā phele saba huṅkāra kariyā
Jayapatākā Swami: Hundreds of thousands of people entered the flower garden, and uprooted all the flower plants, and threw them while roaring loudly.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.396
puṣpera sahita ḍāla chiṇḍiyā chiṇḍiyā
‘hari’ bali’ nāce saba śruti-mūle diyā
Jayapatākā Swami: They tore the flowers with their stems from the uprooted plants, and tucked them behind their ears, while chanting the names of ‘Hari!’ ‘Haribol!’
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.397
ekaṭi kariyā patra sarva loke nite
kichu nā rahila āra kājīra bāḍīte
Jayapatākā Swami: So, if everyone took one leaf, there were so many people that nothing remained in the Kazi’s house, there would not have been anything remaining in the Kazi’s house.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.398
kājīgṛhe agni pradānārtha prabhura ādeśa o bhaktagaṇera galavastre prabhura krodhaśāntira nimitta prārthanā—
bhāṅgilena yata saba bāhirera ghara
prabhu bale,—“agni deha' bāḍīra bhitara
Jayapatākā Swami: When the exterior of the house was broken, the Lord said, “Burn the inside of the house!”
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.399
puḍiyā maruka saba-gaṇera sahite
sarva bāḍī veḍi' agni deha' cāri-bhite
Jayapatākā Swami: Let the Chand Kazi burn to death along with his associates, surround the house and set it on fire from all sides.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.400
dekhoṅ more ki kare uhāra nara-pati
dekhoṅāji kon jane kare avyāhati
Jayapatākā Swami: Let’s see what his king can do to Me, Let’s see today who saves the Chand Kazi.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.401
yama, kāla, mṛtyu—mora sevakera dāsa
mora dṛṣṭi-pāte haya sabāra prakāśa
Jayapatākā Swami: Yamarāja, the god of death, Time and Death, are the servants of My servants, by My glance, everything is manifested.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.402-404
saṅkīrtana-ārambhe mohāra avatāra
kīrtana-virodhī pāpī karimu saṁhāra
sarva pātakī o yadi karaye kīrtana
avaśya tāhāre muñi karimu smaraṇa
tapasvī, sannyāsī, jñānī, yogī ye-ye-jana
saṁhārimu yadi saba nā kare kīrtana
Jayapatākā Swami: My avatāra, My incarnation is to start the saṅkīrtana movement. those who are inimical, to the kīrtana, those sinful people, I will destroy. But even if the most sinful person does kīrtana, certainly I will remember him. The ascetics, sannyāsīs, jñanīs and yogīs whatever person, if they are against kīrtana, if they don’t do kīrtana, then I will destroy them.
Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, the inaugurator of the saṅkīrtana, he would annihilate the meditators who were against kīrtana, but if someone was sinful and engage in kīrtana, He would deliver them. Sannyāsīs are normally very detached, but if they are opposed to the kīrtana, then He would destroy them. So, if yogīs don’t engage in the kīrtana, even if they are accepted by ordinary people, if they don’t loudly chant the holy name of the Lord, Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu is prepared to destroy even them. So, in the seventh canto of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Jiva Gosvāmi Prabhu said:
“Although other processes of devotional service should be performed in Kali-yuga, they must all be accompanied by the chanting of the holy names.”
Jayapatākā Swami: So, by neglecting kīrtana, there cannot be any devotional service. This is why Viśvambhara ordered that all kinds of activities, of service to the Supreme Lord, should be accompanied by the harināma, hari-kīrtana.
Jayapatākā Swami: Karma, jñana, all the processes should be accompanied by the harināma. All these processes are not unalloyed devotional service, they should be known as accessories to kīrtana.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.405
agni deha' ghare saba nā kariha bhaya
āji saba yavanera karimu pralaya”
Jayapatākā Swami: Everyone, do not be afraid, go and set the house on fire. I will annihilate all the Yāvanas today!
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.406
dekhiyā prabhura krodha sarva bhakta-gaṇa
galāya bāṅdhiyā vastra paḍilā takhana
Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing the Lord’s anger, all the devotees tied their cloth around their necks, and fell at the lotus feet of the Lord.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.407
ūrdhva-bāhu kariyā sakala bhakta-gaṇa
prabhura caraṇe dhari' kare nivedana
Jayapatākā Swami: After raising their arms, the devotees grasped the lotus feet of the Lord, and appealed to the Lord as follows.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.408
“tomāra pradhāna aṁśa prabhu saṅkarṣaṇa
tāṅhāra akāle krodha nā haya kakhana
Jayapatākā Swami: Your plenary portion is Saṅkarṣaṇa Prabhu, He never gets angry at an improper time.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.409
ye-kāle haibe sarva sṛṣṭira saṁhāra
saṅkarṣaṇa krodhe hana rudra-avatāra
Jayapatākā Swami: When it is time for the entire creation to be destroyed, Saṅkarṣaṇa becomes angry and descends in the form of Rudradeva.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.410
ye rudra sakala sṛṣṭi kṣaṇeke saṁhāre
śeṣe tiṅho āsi' mile tomāra śarīre
Jayapatākā Swami: That Rudra who destroys, annihilates the entire creation, within a moment, at the end, He comes and merges in Your body.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.411
aṁśāṁśera krodhe yāṅra sakala saṁhāre
se tumi karile krodha kon jane tare
Jayapatākā Swami: When everything is destroyed by the part of Your part, by His anger, when You become angry, who can possibly escape Your anger?
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.412
‘akrodha paramānanda tumi’ vede gāya
veda-vākya prabhu ghucāite nā yuyāya
Jayapatākā Swami: “The Vedas sing that You are not angry, and You are always eternally in spiritual bliss. Oh Lord, it is not proper to neglect the statements of the Vedas.”
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.413
brahmādi o tomāra krodhera nahe pātra
sṛṣṭi-sthiti-pralaya tomāra līlā-mātra
Jayapatākā Swami: Even great personalities like Brahmā, are not the worthy recipients of Your anger. Creation, maintenance and destruction or annihilation, are simply Your pastimes.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.414
karilā to kājīra aneka apamāna
āra yadi ghaṭe tabe saṁhāriha prāṇa”
Jayapatākā Swami: You have insulted the Chand Kazi adequately, if he opposes this kīrtana again, then certainly You can take away his life.
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.415
“jaya viśvambhara mahārāja rājeśvara
jaya sarva loka-nātha śrī-gaura-sundara
Jayapatākā Swami: “All glories to Lord Viśvambhara Mahāraja, the king of kings, the controller of all controllers! All glories to the Lord of all universes! Śrī Gaurasundara!
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.416
jaya jaya ananta-śayana ramā-kānta”
bāhu tuli' stuti kare sakala mahānta
Jayapatākā Swami: All glories, all glories, to the Lord who lays on the Ananta śesa, who is the beloved Lord of Lakṣmī-devī, Ramā, the goddess of fortune.” In this way, the great devotees raised their arms and praised the Lord offering prayers!
Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.417
bhaktavākye prabhura kopa-śānti o anyatra vijaya—
hāse mahāprabhu sarva-dāsera vacane
‘hari’ bali’ nṛtya-rase calilā takhane
Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord, Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu, He smiled, listening to the prayers of all His devotees. Then He chanted the name of ‘Hari’, and then He relished the ecstasy of dancing, and then He left at that time.
So, Lord Caitanya He was expressing His anger because the Chand Kazi had obstructed the saṅkīrtana movement. But He is committed to establishing the saṅkīrtana movement, in the world today. But the Vedas predicted He will be very peaceful. So, the devotees were praying to Him, to take on His peaceful mood. Because if He is angry, He can easily destroy the whole universe, a part of His part does that, and if He is angry, He could easily do it. So, they were praying to Him that He should resume His normal state of peacefulness, and then hearing their nice prayers, He smiled and started chanting Haribol! Chanting the name of Hare Kṛṣṇa and dancing. So, we can see that Lord Caitanya, He had become very angry at the obstruction of the saṅkīrtana movement. The devotees were humbly pushing on the propaganda, the preaching of the saṅkīrtana movement. They will get the protection of the Lord. We have to see the time, place and circumstance, and see how the holy name can be propagated, in the most efficient manner, or the most appropriate manner. Lord Caitanya, He wanted to establish the saṅkīrtana movement in the world. So, He was expressing His anger when the devotees were persecuted for chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, but the devotees pacified the Lord, and so He became His normal, blissful, peaceful person.
Thus, ends the chapter entitled, Devotees Pacify Lord Gaurāṅga’s Anger.
We have time for one question.
Question: Hare Kṛṣṇa Guru Mahāraja, I am begging forgivance for all my offences at your lotus feet. Like Chand Kazi, my mind is always trying to hog my progress. Please bless me so that I can serve you in a more humble way.
Your spiritual son,
Ajānubāhu Gaurahari dāsa.
Jayapatākā Swami: ‘Kṛṣṇe matir astu!’ That’s why we have to control our mind. In the book Vaiṣṇava Ke? – Who is a Vaiṣṇava, Vaiṣṇava Ke? by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura Prabhupāda, he is preaching to the mind, “What kind of Vaiṣṇava are you?” Like that we have to put our mind in its place and control the mind with the intelligence.
Question: Hare Kṛṣṇa Guru Mahāraja! Please accept my humble obeisances. How is a devotee empowered to preach and distribute Kṛṣṇa consciousness to everyone? Seeing the condition of the people, I am feeling to preach. But how can I be able to do so? As a person in society, as a common person, if I preach to any of my friends or neighbors etc., they will see and consider us differently, like as we come from another planet.
Your spiritual son,
Bālājī, Tirupati, India.
Jayapatākā Swami: That’s why it is said that, preaching should be done according to time, place and circumstance. Sometimes the best way of preaching is to have people to read books of Śrīla Prabhupāda, but sometimes you can ask questions that will force the people to think. But you should be a good example yourself, If you don’t like to use the word preaching; ‘preaching’ means speaking down to someone, rather you would like to communicate our message in a very humble and pleading way. So, if you yourself are practicing and believing, then naturally you will be accepted more.
I am supposed to attend a five-minute zoom session with the Russian devotees now.
