Saṅkīrtana Party Reaches Kazi’s House
Jayapatākā Swami: We have been participating in the kīrtana throughout Navadvīpa for about seven days and now finally we are reaching the Chand Kazi’s house.
The first verse is from the Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta and translation by Śrīla Prabhupāda:
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 17.138
vṛndāvana-dāsa ihā ‘caitanya-maṅgale’
vistāri’ varṇiyāchena, prabhu-kṛpā-bale
Purport by Śrīla Prabhupāda: “By the grace of the Lord, Śrīla Vṛndāvana dāsa Ṭhākura has elaborately described this incident in his Caitanya-maṅgala (now Caitanya-bhāgavata).
Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 17,139
kīrtanamukhe navadvīpa -nagara bhramaṇa –
ei mata kīrtana kari’ nagare bhramilā
bhramite bhramite sabhe kājī-dvāre gelā
Jayapatākā Swami: “Performing kīrtana in this way, circumambulating through every nook and corner of the city, they finally reached the door of the Kazi.”
Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.358
prabhura kājīra bāḍīra dike agrasara
gaurāṅga-sundara yāya ye-dige nāciyā
sei dige sarva loka calaye dhāiyā
Jayapatākā Swami: The beautiful Lord Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu, whichever way He danced, in that direction, all the people followed.
Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.359
kājīra bāḍīra patha dharilāṭhākura
vādya-kolāhala kājīśunaye prachura
Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord Gaurāṅga, approached the path of Chand Kazi’s house. The Kazi heard the loud sound of the vibration of the musical instruments and chanting of the holy names.
Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: There is a road from the village of Simuliyā to the present day Vāmana-pukura, where the original house of Kazi was situated, and is situated even now.
Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā 17.140
tarja-garja kare loka, kare kolāhala
gauracandra-bale loka praśraya-pāgala
Jayapatākā Swami: “Murmuring in anger and making a roaring sound, the people, under the protection of Lord Caitanya, became mad through such indulgence.
Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: The Kazi had issued an order not to perform kīrtana, congregational chanting of the holy name of the Lord. But when this was brought up to Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, He ordered civil disobedience to the Kazi’s order. Lord Caitanya and all His devotees, naturally enthusiastic although agitated, must have made a great noise with their loud cries.
Jayapatākā Swami: Hundreds of thousands of millions of people chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, playing on musical instruments, carrying flaming torches, they must have made a tumultuous sound, so that the Kazi must have apprehended.
Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.360
vādya-kolāhala-śravaṇe kājīra tadviṣayera anusandhānārtha anucara preraṇa—
kājī bale,—“śuna' bhāi, ki gīta-vādana!

Jayapatākā Swami: The Kazi said, “listen brothers, what is this singing and music? Is it someone’s marriage, or is it the kīrtana of ghostly beings?”
Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.361
mora bola laṅghiyā ke kare hinduyāni
jhāṭa jāni' āo, tabe caliba āpani”
Jayapatākā Swami: “Go quickly and see who is transgressing my orders, by following the Hindu rituals? then tell me and then I will go myself.”
Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: On hearing the sound of Śrī Gaurasundara's kīrtana party, the Kazi sent some people to investigate. He thought that the sound was coming from a marriage party or some joyful party. He said, “I have issued an order to stop the Hindu's kīrtana. If anyone has transgressed my order and engaged in the Hindu's kīrtana, then as soon as I receive such news, I will go myself to stop it.”
Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.362

Jayapatākā Swami: Even if the king comes, there is not such an arrangement in Nadia, every town, there is this arrangement.
Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.370

Caitanya-bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.375
keha bale,—“vāmana dekhite lāge bhaya
gilite āise yena dekhi kampa haya”
Jayapatākā Swami: Another said, “When I see this brāhmaṇa, Nimāi Paṇḍita, I feel fearful, I tremble to see this form, ready to swallow or devour everything.”
Thus, ends the chapter entitled, Saṅkīrtana Party Reaches Kazi’s House.
So, we see that here the party is arriving at the Chand Kazi’s house. From the distance, he could hear the music and the chanting. He thought maybe there is a marriage party or something, then he sent his servant to check, and they saw the situation and gave the report to the Chand Kazi. So, they couldn’t understand why Lord Caitanya was crying. They estimated with their material experience, when someone dies or leaves then people mourn that person’s departure. So, they thought, maybe like Lord Gaurāṅga is crying because of some distress, they don’t understand anything about love of Kṛṣṇa, and how the Lord is chanting in separation from love of Kṛṣṇa. But seeing the huge assembly of devotees, the people they had prosecuted in the past, were now coming forward and some of those who had been tortured and beaten, they were crying out, “let us kill the Kazi!” So, they wanted to run way, so it was a very tense situation. We are seeing that this situation happens sometimes in the world, when people demonstrate, when they feel that they are being treated with injustice. So, Lord Caitanya, He led this civil disobedience for the right reason 500 years ago. We will see how the demonstration peacefully resolves itself.
Hare Kṛṣṇa! Any question?
Question: Hare Kṛṣṇa, daṇḍavat praṇāma Guru Mahārāja, how come even an atheist be so hard hearted that even on seeing Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu dancing, their heart didn’t melt? – Kamalendra Singh Rathore.
Jayapatākā Swami: Some of the atheists’ hearts melted when they saw Lord Caitanya dancing. It says that some rolled on the ground and started to sing and dance. But some were very envious, and they could not appreciate the saṅkīrtana. Whether they actually saw Lord Caitanya or not was not clear, but they were saying many envious things. From this it is understood, some personally saw Lord Caitanya, and their hearts melted, others, for some reason, their heart was so hard, they were so envious, that they spoke various envious things. So, some people in this material world are such that, they are very much against the Lord. Just like Jarāsandha, he attacked Kṛṣṇa so many times. So, some of the demons, they are against Lord Kṛṣṇa, like Kaṁsa. So, some envious people are there, and they maintain their enviousness, even when they see the Lord face to face. Kṛṣṇa came in the assembly of Duryodhana, as a messenger of the Paṇḍavas. He tried to broker-peace, but instead breaking the etiquette of respect of the messenger, they tried to arrest Kṛṣṇa, and even He showed the universal form, they didn’t accept Kṛṣṇa, although they could not capture Him. So, some people are there, they are demons and even if they see the Lord, they don’t accept. Lord Caitanya, most of the people even the hard-hearted atheists; He killed their atheistic, demonic propensity and kept their devotion.
So today is the Pāṇḍava Nirjalā-Ekādaśī, Bhīma had requested Vyāsadeva, He told him that he was a very hungry person, he had a fire burning in his stomach, and he had to eat something everyday. So, he couldn’t follow Ekādaśī twice a month. He wanted to know what Ekādaśī, one day he could for the whole year. Then Vyāsadeva advised him that on this day, he could fast, without even taking water, and he could do ācamana, but the water should be just a drop, enough that one mustard seed could be floated in. You can take carāṇāmṛta of the Lord, but just one drop. If he took more than that and did not stay up the whole night, then his Ekādaśī would be a failure. Before eating he should give some charity, he should feed the brāhmaṇas, and that is why we are having this devotee care, food for life donations.
On 4th we are observing the ciḍā-dadhi-mahotsava, If, want to participate and you are doing the Nirjalā-Ekādaśī, or otherwise if you want to participate, you can send in donations at www.mayapur.com, and so far, they say that www.mayapur.com has collected 70 thousand rupees, for the ciḍā-dadhi festival. One of the names of this festival is Daṇḍa-mahotsava, Lord Nityānanda is very humorous, so He told Raghunātha dāsa, I want to punish you. So, He said, “Your punishment is that you have to feed Me and My associates, yogurt, flat rice and fruits, feast!” So, what was Dāsa Raghunātha’s crime, why was he being punished?
Mahā Varahā dāsa: Stay tuned, and we will tell you on the 4th.
Jayapatākā Swami: Why? And what was the result of receiving Lord Nityānanda’s punishment? and if you want to help Dāsa Raghunātha being punished, if you are in Māyāpur, you can take some of the ciḍā-dadhi. Otherwise, in Māyāpur or anywhere you can donate some flat rice, yogurt or fruits. Those who are not in Māyāpur, they can send to mayapur.com, and those in Māyāpur, they can sponsor some flat rice, yogurt, etc.
I am making a special pot called the “Mādhavendra Purī Bhoga”, We have many pots which have special recipes made this year, but standard recipes like Salty Italian, Salty South India, Hot and spicy, salty traditional Bengali, here you have mangoes, jackfruits and lychees. So, we are having a special traditional pot, Sweet Yogurt – mmm! which we hope to offer to Lord Nityānanda and Lord Caitanya.
Thank you very much! Hare Kṛṣṇa!
