Happy Tumult of the Residents of Nadia Upon Seeing the Dancing of Mahāprabhu

Introduction: So, we are reading the description of the procession of the residents of Navadvīpa, in four different groups, of which Lord Caitanya is in the last group. They are marching on the house of the Chand Kazi but doing kīrtana and dancing. So, all the people of Navadvīpa came out to see the dancing of Caitanya Mahāprabhu, for so long they had wanted to see His kīrtana and dancing, now everyone was seeing. They became very ecstatic, so now we will hear the description.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.225

hena bujhi—vaikunṭha āilā navadvīpe
vaikuṇṭha-svabhāva-dharma pāileka loke

Jayapatākā Swami: So, it was understood, that Vaikuṇṭha had descended in Navadvīpa, and that all the inhabitants of Navadvīpa, took on the characteristics found in Vaikuṇṭha.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.226

jīvamātra caturbhuja haila sakala
nā jānila keha, kṛṣṇa-ānande vihvala

Jayapatākā Swami: All the living entities took on the form of having four arms, like they do in Vaikuṇṭha, but no one understood this, being overwhelmed in ecstatic love for Kṛṣṇa.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.227

hasta ye haila cāri, tāhe nāhi jāne
āpanāra smṛti gela, tabe tāli kene

Jayapatākā Swami: They didn’t notice that they manifested four arms, they forgot of themselves. So, how did they clap their hands?

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.228

hena mate vaikuṇṭhera sukhe navadvīpa
nāciyā yāyena sabe gaṅgāra samīpa

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way, the inhabitants of Navadvīpa, enjoyed the happiness of Vaikuṇṭha as they were dancing along the path, near the Ganges.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.229

vijaya karilā yena nanda-ghoṣera bālāhā
tete mohana-vāṁśī, gale vanamālā

Jayapatākā Swami: It appeared that the son of Nanda Goṣha, Nanda Mahārāja, had descended, with an enchanting flute in His hand, with a beautiful forest flower garland around His neck.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.230

ei mata kīrtana kariyā sarva-loka
pāsarilā deha-dharma, yata duḥkha-śoka

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way, all the people performed kīrtana, everyone forgot their bodily situation, such as distress and lamentation. So, the devotees of Navadvīpa participating in this saṅkīrtana of Lord Caitanya, they became the residents of the spiritual world, they were filled with spiritual ecstasy of love of Kṛṣṇa, and they were manifesting spiritual bodies. They were not aware of this situation, because they were so much overwhelmed in ecstasy.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.231

gaḍāgaḍi' yāya keha, mālasāṭ pūre
kāhārao jihvāya nānā mata vākya sphure

Jayapatākā Swami: Some people rolled on the ground, and some slapped their limbs, some were speaking different languages, that manifested on their tongues. We have heard of people speaking in tongues, speaking different languages that they normally don’t know, and apparently, this was part of the unusual special manifestation of the kīrtana in Navadvīpa. Some people were so ecstatic, they were rolling on the ground, some people were slapping their bodies like professional wrestlers. There was so much jubilation, some people were speaking in languages that they don’t know. They had four hands; they didn’t notice. It was completely out of this world’s manifestation.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.232

keha bale,—“ebe kājī beṭā gela kothā
lāgi pāṅa ekhana chiṇḍiyā pheloṅ māthā

Jayapatākā Swami: Someone said, where is that Kazi fellow now? If we find him, we will tear off his head!

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.233

raḍa diyā yāya keha pāṣaṇḍī dharite
keha pāṣaṇḍīra nāme kilāya māṭite

Jayapatākā Swami: Some people ran to catch some atheists, and others punched the ground, uttering the name of an atheist.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.234

nā jāni vā kata jane mṛdaṅga bājāya
nā jāni vā mahānande kata jane gāya

Jayapatākā Swami: Who can say how many people played on mṛdaṅgas? Who can say how many people sang in great ecstasy?

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.235

hena prema-vṛṣṭi haila sarva nadīyāya
vaikunṭha-sevako yāhā cāhe sarvathāya

Jayapatākā Swami: There was such a great downpour of rain in the form of ecstatic love of Kṛṣṇa, all over Nadia, that even the inhabitants of Vaikuṇṭha hankered to experience it.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.236

ye sukhe vihvala aja, ananta, śaṅkara
hena-rase bhāse sarva-nadīyā-nagara

Jayapatākā Swami: That transcendental happiness which overwhelms Lord Brahmā, Anantadeva and Lord Śaṅkara, the entire Navadvīpa city was floating in that transcendental ecstasy.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.237

gaṅgā-tīre tīre prabhu vaikunṭhera rāya
sāṅgopāṅga-astra-pāriṣade nāci' yāya

Jayapatākā Swami: Alongside the bank of the Ganges, the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha, He danced with His expansions, His servants, His weapons and confidential companions.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.238

kīrtana-prabhāve sakala sthānera pavitratā

pṛthivīra ānandera nāhi samuccaya
ānande hailā sarva-dig patha-maya

Jayapatākā Swami: The earth had never experienced such ecstasy. The roads in all directions were filled with loving ecstasy.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.239

tila-mātra anācāra hena bhūmi nāi
parama uttama haila sarva-ṭhāñi-ṭhāñi

Jayapatākā Swami: There was not the slightest misbehavior to be found anywhere. Each of those places became supremely purified.

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: “All of those places became most sanctified by the influence of Hari-kīrtana. Even ordinary places no longer remained like desolate abodes of sense gratification devoid of kīrtana.”

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.240

śrī caitanyera ādi-kīrtanera pada—

nāciyā yāyena prabhu gaurāṅga-sundara
veḍiyā gāyena catur-dike anucara

Jayapatākā Swami: As Lord Gaurāṅga-sundara danced along the way, His followers on all sides of Him, were singing.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.241

atha pada—
“tuyā caraṇe mana lāgahuṅ re
sāraṅga-dhara, tuyā caraṇe mana lāgahuṅ re”

caitanya-candrera ei ādi saṅkīrtana
bhakta-gaṇa gāya, nāce śrī-śacīnandana

Jayapatākā Swami: “Let my mind be fixed at Your lotus feet, O carrier of the bow, let my mind be fixed at Your lotus feet.”

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.242

caitanya-candrera ei ādi saṅkīrtana
bhakta-gaṇa gāya, nāce śrī-śacīnandana

Jayapatākā Swami: In Lord Caitanya-candra’s original saṅkīrtana, all the devotees were chanting and Śrī Śacīnandana was dancing. So, in this description of the carrier of the bow, some considered Lord Śrī Rāmacandra as the carrier of the bow and wanted to fix their mind on His lotus feet. Some considered Kṛṣṇa, Vāsudeva and wanted to fix their mind on His lotus feet, and some were devotees of Lakṣmī-Nārāyaṇa, and some people wanted to worship Sītā, Rāma.

So different devotees, may manifest their devotion in different levels, in whatever case, the devotees are detached from sinful activities. They are eager to benefit themselves and others. So, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, His pastimes, His abode, His devotees, are free of all material limitations, like abomination, incompleteness, insipidness, limitations, and temporariness. Nothing in devotional service is temporary, it remains eternally. So, if people think of devotional service in some material sense, they distort the essential characteristics of eternal devotional service.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.243

kīrtanāveśe sakalera pathabhrānti o caturdaśa bhuvanera śabdoddiṣṭa viṣaya-atikramaṇa

kīrtana karena sabe ṭhākurera sane
‘kon dige yāi’ ihā keha nāhi jāne

Jayapatākā Swami: They were so absorbed in doing kīrtana with the Lord, Gaurāṅga, they forgot what directions they should go, and where they were going, they didn’t know, they forgot where they were going!

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.244-245

lakṣa koṭi loke ye karaye hari-dhvani
brahmāṇḍa bhedaye yena hena-mata śuni

Jayapatākā Swami: Hundreds of thousands of millions of people were chanting the holy names of Hari. The vibration was so powerful, that it penetrated the universe, and people could hear it all over the universe.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.245

brahmaloka, śivaloka, vaikuṇṭha paryanta
kṛṣṇa-sukhe pūrṇa hailā, nahi tāra anta

Jayapatākā Swami: In the planet of Lord Brahmā, the planet of Lord Śiva, even Vaikuṇṭha, became filled with the unlimited happiness of Kṛṣṇa consciousness. There was no limitation.

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: “Since the name of Hari was chanted loudly, the vibration penetrated the fourteen worlds. Abodes such as Brahmaloka, Śivaloka, and, above them yet beneath Goloka, the supremely opulent Vaikuṇṭhaloka became filled with the ecstasy of Kṛṣṇa consciousness.”

Vibrations of Hari Kīrtana Penetrates All the Fourteen Worlds or Demigods and Human Beings Dance Together in Saṅkīrtana

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.246

devagaṇera kīrtana-darśane mūrchā o samvitprāptite kīrtane yogadāna—

sapārṣade sarva deva āilā dekhite
dekhiyā mūrcchita hailā sabāra sahite

Jayapatākā Swami: With their associates, the demigods came to see the kīrtana, when they saw the kīrtana, they all fainted. So, extraterrestrial beings, hearing the loud vibration of the Harināma-kīrtana, which was penetrating all over the universe, they came down to see along with their associates, and then when they saw the kīrtana manifestation, they fainted, being overwhelmed with the ecstatic manifestation. Even the celestial angels, devas, demigods, they came down with their associates to see the kīrtana and became overwhelmed with the ecstatic expression that was going on.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.247

caitanya pāiyā kṣaṇe sarva deva-gaṇa
nara-rūpe miśāiyā karena kīrtana

Jayapatākā Swami: When the celestial beings and demigods regained their consciousness, they took the form of human beings and joined the kīrtana, mixing with the crowds.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.248-249

aja, bhava, varuṇa, kuvera devarāja
yama, soma-ādi yata devera samāja

brahma-sukha-svarūpa apūrva dekhi' raṅga
sabe hailā nara-rūpe caitanyera saṅga

Jayapatākā Swami: The celestial beings like Lord Brahmā, Lord Śiva, Varuṇa, Kuvera, Indra, Yamarāja, and the moon god, and others, they all joined this kīrtana procession, when they saw the transcendental happiness which was being manifested. They took on the form of human beings to have the association of Lord Caitanya. Haribol! Haribol!

Purport by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura: “On seeing those wonderful pastimes that manifested spiritual happiness, all the demigods took human forms and attained the most rare association of Śrī Caitanyadeva.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this kīrtana was a universal affair. When the demigods and celestial beings realized that the Supreme Personality of Godhead had descended, and is doing a mass saṅkīrtana, they came down and participated, taking on human forms. No one could realize who they were, and how many millions of people in the city of Navadvīpa were there, because people were joining the party from all parts of the universe, and it was becoming a transcendental affair.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.250

deve nare ekatra haiyā ‘hari’ bale
ākāśa pūriyā saba mahā-dīpa jvale

Jayapatākā Swami: As the celestial residents, the demigods, the humans, were all chanting together the holy name of Hari, the sky became lit from the big torches or the big torches light lit the entire sky.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.251

kadalīra vṛkṣa prati-duyāre duyāre
pūrṇa-ghaṭa, dhānya, dūrvā, dīpa, āmrasāre

Jayapatākā Swami: At every doorway there were decorations of auspicious items like banana trees with the bunches of bananas, with full water pots, with rice paddy, with dūrvā grass, with lamps and with decoration of mango leaves, so these were at each doorstep.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.252

navadvīpa-nagarera tatkālīna vaibhava

nadīyāra sampatti varṇite śakti kāra?
asaṅkhya nagara-ghara-catvara-bājāra

Jayapatākā Swami: The Navadvīpa town, who has the power to describe its opulences? There were uncountable suburbs, towns, houses, raised platforms and markets. So just as Dvārakā is described in the spiritual world, the Navadvīpa is part of the spiritual world in Śvetadvīpa, so that spiritual opulence from Navadvīpa was manifest and everyone could see it. Hare Kṛṣṇa!

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.253

eka jāti loka yā'te arbuda arbuda
ihā saṅkhyā karibeka kon vā abudha

Jayapatākā Swami: Each caste of people were in the hundreds of millions, which fool will be trying to estimate the number!

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.254

avataribena prabhu jāniyā vidhātā
sakala ekatra kari' thuilena tathā

Jayapatākā Swami: The Supreme Lord would descend on this place the creator had arranged everything was present there.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.255

strīye yata jayakāra diyā bale ‘hari’
tāhā lakṣa vatsare o varṇite nā pāri

Jayapatākā Swami: Even in a hundred thousand years, I cannot describe the ladies’ vibrations of auspicious sounds and chanting of the holy name of Hari. So, it is understandable from this that the ladies were also participating in the saṅkīrtana. They were doing ulu-dhvani and making auspicious sounds and chanting the holy name of Hari. So amazing was the sound, the vibration, that the author says that even in a hundred thousand years he cannot explain the vibration and the ecstasy that was spreading around.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.256

prabhura nṛtya-kīrtanādi-darśane sakalera dhairyavicyuti—

ye saba dekhaye prabhu nāciyā yāite
tārā āra citta-vṛtti nā pāre dharite

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing Lord Gaurāṅga dancing along the pathway, they could not control their emotions.

Śrī Caitanya-Bhāgavata, Madhya-khaṇḍa 23.257

se kāruṇya dekhite, se krandana śunite
parama-lampaṭa paḍe kāndiyā bhūmite

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing that incredible mercy, hearing the crying of the Lord in ecstasy, even great debauchees, they fell on the ground, crying, weeping. So, such was the ecstasy that was witnessed in the saṅkīrtana party of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Many times, we have seen dramas and different things, trying to display their ecstasy of Lord Caitanya’s saṅkīrtana, when they approached the house of the Chand Kazi. But here we see in this description, there was unlimited ecstasy.

Denizens of different planets of the universe, were coming down and mixing with the people, participating in this kīrtana and even the most sinful people, most materialistic debauchees, even they could experience the ecstasy of this saṅkīrtana.

They fell to the ground, weeping! So, we are so fortunate that we can have a chance to participate in a minute way in the saṅkīrtana movement of Caitanya Mahāprabhu. How this saṅkīrtana manifested by Lord Caitanya was so amazing, so universal festival, that is something to be part of. Hare Kṛṣṇa.

Thus, ends the chapters entitled “Happy Tumult of the Residents of Nadia Upon Seeing the Dancing of Mahāprabhu” and “The Demigods were taking the Forms of Human Beings in These Wonderful Pastimes to Walk Around with the Devotees in Different Pastimes.”

Jayapatākā Swami: The devas were dancing. We can’t imagine how the Supreme Lord, He came down and was dancing with His devotees, and inspired everybody in love of Kṛṣṇa. Lord Jesus said, His first commandment was to love God. To love God with all your heart, with all your mind, with all your soul. Lord Caitanya practically gave that love to everyone, and people were moved in inexplicable ways to participate in the loving service to the Supreme Lord. Since the Lord and His name are not different, so chanting the name of the Lord means that one associates with the Lord. That was manifested in this historical saṅkīrtana procession.

Questions?

Question: Dear Guru Mahārāja, please accept my respectful obeisances. All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda! The demigods were taking the forms of human beings in these wonderful pastimes to walk around with the devotees in different pastimes, is that happening even today that they take the form of human beings to participate in kīrtanas, festivals, etc.?

Your spiritual daughter,
Mallikā Mādhavī devī dāsī.

Jayapatākā Swami: Śrīla Prabhupāda said that sometimes Nārada muni comes down and watches the kīrtana of the devotees, and Śrīla Prabhupāda said, how he saw Nitāi-Gaura dancing in the Ratha-yātrā. So Śrīla Prabhupāda could say participation of extraterrestrials in the saṅkīrtana. Hare Kṛṣṇa!

Question: Dear Gurudeva, please accept my respectful obeisances. All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda! Thank you for your blessings. What is the meaning of love of Kṛṣṇa? Thanks.

Your servant,
Divya Govinda dāsa.

Jayapatākā Swami: In the material world we love different things, some people love ice cream, some people love movies. But what is real love? Actually, we are part of Kṛṣṇa, so it’s natural for us to love Kṛṣṇa, and if we love various parts of Kṛṣṇa, but that is insignificant. Actually, love Kṛṣṇa, as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, means that you want to serve Him, and that you are completely absorbed in His transcendental form, qualities, pastimes. But I don’t think it can be explained so simply, in a few words. But we can see how the devotees of Lord Caitanya, and how Lord Caitanya Himself manifested love of Kṛṣṇa. As they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words,” and the pastimes of Lord Caitanya are more than a thousand pictures. Alright!

I have to go and prepare for the evening. Hare Kṛṣṇa! Gaurāṅga!
