Hare Krishna! Dear Devotees! Today we will be continuing with the compilation of Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya book. Today's chapter is entitled as:
Phalaśruti - The Lord’s desire is understood by hearing about how the Lord again met with Sanātana Gosvāmī, Part 1
Under the section: Sanātana Gosvāmī Visits the Lord at Jagannātha Purī
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.207
dolayātrānte sanātanake vṛndāvane preraṇaḥ—
dola-yātrā dekhi’ prabhu tāṅre vidāya dilā
vṛndāvane ye karibena, saba śikhāilā
Translation: After they saw the Dola-yātrā festival, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu instructed Sanātana Gosvāmī fully about what to do in Vṛndāvana and bade him farewell.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Dola-yātrā is Gaura-Pūrṇimā, Since Lord Caitanya did not reveal His real identity, they celebrated the Gaura-Purnima as Dola-yātrā.
But now that Lord Caitanya has left, we know that He is the Supreme Personality of Godhead, we observe Dola-yātrā as Gaura-Pūrṇimā.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.208
vidāyakāle bhakta o bhagavānera tīvrviraha-duḥkhaḥ—
ye-kāle vidāya hailā prabhura caraṇe
dui-janāra viccheda-daśā nā yāya varṇane
Translation: The scene of separation that took place when Sanātana Gosvāmī and Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu took leave of each other is so piteous that it cannot be described herein.
Jayapatākā Swami: Since Sanātana Gosvāmī had so much of affection for Lord Caitanya and since Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu had much affection for His devotees, when they bid farewell to each other, it was a very intense moment of separation.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.209
prabhura pathānugamane vṛndāvana-yātrāḥ—
yei vana-pathe prabhu gelā vṛndāvana
sei-pathe yāite mana kailā sanātana
Translation: Sanātana Gosvāmī decided to go to Vṛndāvana by the very forest path Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu had traversed.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya went through the Jhārikhaṇḍa jungle and He got all the animals to chanṭ.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.210
balabhadrasthāne gantavyasthāna-saṅkalanaḥ—
ye-pathe, ye-grāma-nadī-śaila, yāhāṅ yei līlā
balabhadra-bhaṭṭa-sthāne saba likhi’ nilā
Translation: Sanātana Gosvāmī noted from Balabhadra Bhaṭṭācārya all the villages, rivers and hills where Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu had performed His pastimes.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Sanātana Gosvāmī recorded all the places that Lord Caitanya has visited in the Jhārikhaṇḍa jungle.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.211
pathimadhye bhaktagaṇasaha milanānte yātrāḥ—
mahāprabhura bhakta-gaṇe sabāre miliyā
sei-pathe cali’ yāya se-sthāna dekhiyā
Translation: Sanātana Gosvāmī met all the devotees of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and then, traveling by that same path, visited the places through which Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu had passed.
Purport: Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura writes in a song (Śaraṇāgati 31.3):
gaura āmāra,ye saba sthāne, karala bhramaṇa raṅge
se-saba sthāna,heriba āmi, praṇayi-bhakata-saṅge
“May I visit all the holy places associated with the līlās of Lord Caitanya and His devotees.”
A devotee should make a point of visiting all the places where Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu performed His pastimes.
Indeed, pure devotees of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu even want to see the places He simply visited for only hours or minutes.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, we are installing the lotus foot print of Lord Caitanya in some of the places where He had visited so that the devotees could remember His pastimes.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.212
prabhura līlāsthāna-darśane sanātanera premāveśaḥ—
ye-ye-līlā prabhu pathe kailā ye-ye-sthāne
tāhā dekhi’ premāveśa haya sanātane
Translation: As soon as Sanātana Gosvāmī visited a place where Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu had performed His pastimes on the way, he was immediately filled with ecstatic love.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, remembering Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu and His places of Pastimes is a way to experience premānanda bliss.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.213
pūrve sanātanera, pare rūpera vṛndāvanāgamanaḥ—
ei-mate sanātana vṛndāvane āilā
pāche āsi’ rūpa-gosāñi tāṅhāre mililā
Translation: In this way Sanātana Gosvāmī reached Vṛndāvana.
Later Rūpa Gosvāmī came and met him.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.214
śrī-rūpera vṛndāvanāgamana-vilambera hetuḥ—
eka-vatsara rūpa-gosāñira gauḍe vilamba haila
kuṭumbera ‘sthiti’-artha vibhāga kari’ dila
Translation: Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī had been delayed in Bengal for a year because he was dividing his money among his relatives to situate them in their proper positions.
Purport: Although Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī renounced his family life, he nevertheless was not unjust to his family members.
Even after renunciation, he returned to Bengal, where he properly divided whatever money he had and gave it to his relatives so that they would not be inconvenienced.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Rūpa Gosvami had divided his money, 50% to the service of Kṛṣṇa and Vaiṣṇavas, 25 % for his family members and 25% for emergencies.
The emergency money was utilized by Sanātana Gosvāmī to escape.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.215
gauḍe ye artha chila, tāhā ānāilā
kuṭumba-brāhmaṇa-devālaye bāṅṭi’ dilā
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.215
Translation: He collected whatever money he had accumulated in Bengal and divided it among his relatives, the brāhmaṇas and the temples.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.216
saba manaḥ-kathā gosāñi kari’ nirvāhaṇa
niścinta hañā śīghra āilā vṛndāvana
Translation: Thus after finishing all the tasks he had on his mind, he returned to Vṛndāvana fully satisfied.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, like this he divided his accumulated wealth and like that all the devotees should consider this example of Rūpa Gosvāmī.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.217
bhrātṛdvayera vrajavāsa o prabhura catur-vidha ājñā-sevā-pālanaḥ—
dui bhāi mili’ vṛndāvane vāsa kailā
prabhura ye ājñā, duṅhe saba nirvāhilā
Translation: The brothers met at Vṛndāvana, where they stayed to execute the will of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
Purport:
śrī-caitanya-mano-’bhīṣṭaṁ sthāpitaṁ yena bhū-tale
svayaṁ rūpaḥ kadā mahyaṁ dadāti sva-padāntikam
“When will Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī Prabhupāda, who has established within the material world the mission to fulfill the desire of Lord Caitanya, give me shelter under his lotus feet?” Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī and Sanātana Gosvāmī were previously ministers directly in charge of the government of Nawab Hussain Shah, and they were also householders, but later they became gosvāmīs.
A gosvāmī, therefore, is one who executes the will of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
The title gosvāmī is not an inherited designation; it is meant for a person who has controlled his sense gratification and dedicated his life to executing the order of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu.
Therefore Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī and Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī became genuine gosvāmīs after dedicating their lives to the service of the Lord.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, in Vṛndāvana there are many caste Gosvāmīs who pass their name down to their descendants, but Gosvāmī means one who controls his senses.
Rūpa and Sanātana Gosvāmī actually controlled their senses, while others who inherited this title may not be in the same position.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.218
nānā-śāstra āni’ lupta-tīrtha uddhārilā
vṛndāvane kṛṣṇa-sevā prakāśa karilā
Translation: Śrīla Rūpa Gosvāmī and Sanātana Gosvāmī collected many revealed scriptures, and from the evidence in those scriptures they excavated all the lost sites of pilgrimage.
Thus they established temples for the worship of Lord Kṛṣṇa.
Jayapatākā Swami: This was the instruction of Lord Caitanya, to excavate the lost tīrthas in Vṛndāvana.
We are placing the lotus foot print in the places where Lord Caitanya went.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.219
śrī-sanātanera grantharacanādi-kāryaḥ—
sanātana grantha kailā ‘bhāgavatāmṛte’
bhakta-bhakti-kṛṣṇa-tattva jāni yāhā haite
Translation: Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī compiled the Bṛhad-bhāgavatāmṛta.
From this book one can understand who is a devotee, what is the process of devotional service, and who is Kṛṣṇa, the Absolute Truth.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, the BBT has published this book, Bṛhad-bhāgavatāmṛta, by reading this one can understand all these truths and it gives one gives one good understanding of the various devotees of the Lord.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.220
siddhānta-sāra grantha kailā ‘daśama-ṭippanī’
kṛṣṇa-līlā-rasa-prema yāhā haite jāni
Translation: Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī wrote a commentary on the Tenth Canto known as Daśama-ṭippanī, from which we can understand the transcendental pastimes and ecstatic love of Lord Kṛṣṇa.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya revealed the ecstatic love of Lord Caitanya and this is explained by Sanātana Gosvāmī but before even Kṛṣṇa kept it as a secret.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.221
‘hari-bhakti-vilāsa’-grantha kailā vaiṣṇava-ācāra
vaiṣṇavera kartavya yāhāṅ pāiye pāra
Translation: He also compiled the Hari-bhakti-vilāsa, from which we can understand the standard behavior of a devotee and the full extent of a Vaiṣṇava’s duty.
Purport: Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura writes, “The Hari-bhakti-vilāsa was originally compiled by Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī.
Later, Gopāla Bhaṭṭa Gosvāmī produced a shortened version of it and added the Dig-darśinī-ṭīkā.
In the Hari-bhakti-vilāsa there are so many quotations from the sātvata scriptures that sometimes it is inquired how the atheistic smārtas can refuse to accept them and instead imagine some other opinions.
What is recorded in the Hari-bhakti-vilāsa strictly follows the Vedic scriptures and is certainly pure, but the attitude of the karmīs is always one of giving up the conclusion of pure Vaiṣṇava understanding.
Because the karmīs are very much attached to the world and material activities, they always try to establish atheistic principles that oppose the understanding of the Vaiṣṇavas.”
Jayapatākā Swami: So, the atheistic people want to enjoy the senses and the body.
They do not realize that they are not this body so they misplace their attachemnt.
Sanātana Gosvāmī explains in Hari-bhakti-vilāsa what activities are suitable for Vaiṣṇavas.
Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Antya-līlā, 4.222
āra yata grantha kailā, tāhā ke kare gaṇana
‘madana-gopāla-govindera sevā’-prakāśana
Translation: Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī also compiled many other books.
Who can enumerate them?
The basic principle of all these books is to show us how to love Madana-mohana and Govindajī.
Haribol!
Purport: The Bhakti-ratnākara refers to the following books by Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī: (1) the Bṛhad-bhāgavatāmṛta, (2) the Hari-bhakti-vilāsa and his commentary known as Dig-darśinī, (3) the Līlā-stava and (4) the commentary on the Tenth Canto of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam known as Vaiṣṇava-toṣaṇī.
Sanātana Gosvāmī compiled many, many books, all with the aim of describing how to serve the principal Deities of Vṛndāvana — Govinda and Madana-gopāla.
Later, other Deities were gradually established, and the importance of Vṛndāvana increased.
Jayapatākā Swami: So, upto here you heard the glories of Sanātana Gosvāmī and after this there will be some description of Rūpa Gosvāmī.
Thus ends the chapter entitled, Phalaśruti – The Lord’s desire is understood by hearing about how the Lord again met with Sanātana Gosvāmī, Part 1
