Hare Kṛṣṇa! Dear Devotees! Today is the compilation of Caitanya līlā book, the chapter today is entitled:
Sanātana Gosvāmī Considers His Last Piece of Material Attraction Gone, Part 2
Under the section: Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu Instructs Sanātana Gosvāmī in the Science of the Absolute Truth
Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.83
bhoṭakambala prabhura anabhipreta jāniyā chinnakanthā-grahaṇa
sanātana jānila ei prabhure nā bhāya
bhoṭa tyāga karibāre cintilā upāya
Translation: Because Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu was repeatedly glancing at this valuable woolen blanket, Sanātana Gosvāmī could understand that the Lord did not approve of it. He then began to consider a way to give it up.
Jayapatākā Swami: Sanātana Gosvāmī wanted to do everything in a such a way that Lord Caitanya was satisfied, because he considered that Lord Caitanya did not approve of his valuable blanket, he was thinking how would he give it up.
Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.84
eta cinti’ gelā gaṅgāya madhyāhna karite
eka gauḍiyā kānthā dhuñā diyāche śukāite
Translation: Thinking in this way, Sanātana went to the bank of the Ganges to bathe. While there, he saw that a mendicant from Bengal had washed his quilt and spread it out to dry.
Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.85
tāre kahe,—“ore bhāi, kara upakāre
ei bhoṭa lañā ei kāṅthā deha’ more”
Translation: Sanātana Gosvāmī then told the Bengali mendicant, “My dear brother, please do me a favor. Trade me your quilt for this woolen blanket.”
Jayapatākā Swami: Since the woolen blanket was much more valuable than the torn quilt, naturally the mendicant would be very appreciative to give his torn quilt and get a woolen blanket.
Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.86
sei kahe,—“rahasya kara prāmāṇika hañā?
bahu-mūlya bhoṭa dibā kena kāṅthā lañā?”
Translation: The mendicant replied, “Sir, you are a respectable gentleman. Why are you joking with me? Why would you trade your valuable blanket for my torn quilt?”
Jayapatākā Swami: This Bengali mendicant was thinking that Sanātana Gosvāmī was joking with him, he couldn’t see why he would give valuable woolen blanket for his torn quilt.
Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.87
teṅho kahe,—“rahasya nahe, kahi satya-vāṇī
bhoṭa laha, tumi deha’ more kāṅthā-khāni”
Translation: Sanātana said, “I am not joking; I am speaking the truth. Kindly take this blanket in exchange for your torn quilt.”
Jayapatākā Swami: Since Sanātana Gosvāmī interest was to please Lord Caitanya and if he gave up his valuable blanket, that was his last attachment to the material world.
Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.88
eta bali’ kāṅthā la-ila, bhoṭa tāṅre diyā
gosāñira ṭhāṅi āilā kāṅthā gale diyā
Translation: Saying this, Sanātana Gosvāmī exchanged the blanket for the quilt. He then returned to Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu with the quilt on his shoulder.
Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.89
prabhura bhoṭakambala sambandhe jijñāsa, sanātanera saba ghaṭanā varṇana:—
prabhu kahe,—‘tomāra bhoṭa-kambala kothā gela?’
prabhu-pade saba kathā gosāñi kahila
Translation: When Sanātana Gosvāmī returned, the Lord asked, “Where is your woolen blanket?” Sanātana Gosvāmī then narrated the whole story to the Lord.
Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.90-91
prabhura kṛṣṇa-kṛpā-māhātmya varṇana:—
prabhu kahe,—“ihā āmi kariyāchi vicāra
viṣaya-roga khaṇḍāila kṛṣṇa ye tomāra
se kene rākhibe tomāra śeṣa viṣaya-bhoga?
roga khaṇḍi’ sad-vaidya nā rākhe śeṣa roga
Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu then said, “I have already deliberately considered this matter. Since Lord Kṛṣṇa is very merciful, He has nullified your attachment for material things. Why should Kṛṣṇa allow you to maintain a last bit of material attachment? After vanquishing a disease, a good physician does not allow any of the disease to remain.
Jayapatākā Swami: Like this Caitanya Mahāprabhu he wanted the complete surrender of Sanātana Gosvāmī that his only purpose would be the complete satisfaction of Kṛṣṇa. So, like this Sanātana Gosvāmī, he achieved Kṛṣṇa’s mercy in this way.
Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.92
ācāra o pracāre paraspara sāmañjasya rākhibāra upadeśa
tina mudrāra bhoṭa gāya, mādhukarī grāsa
dharma-hāni haya, loka kare upahāsa”
Translation: “It is contradictory to practice mādhukarī and at the same time wear a valuable blanket. One loses his spiritual strength by doing this, and one will also become an object of jokes.”
Jayapatākā Swami: Since Sanātana Gosvāmī proposed to do door to door begging or mādhukarī, to have a valuable woolen blanket would have beene contradictory and people might criticize him or joke with him. So Lord Caitanya thought it appropriate if he was to beg door to door, better for him to have a less valuable cloth.
Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.93
sanātanera prabhu-kṛpā-māhātmya-praśaṁsā
gosāñi kahe,—“ye khaṇḍila kuviṣaya-bhoga
tāṅra icchāya gela mora śeṣa viṣaya-roga”
Translation: Sanātana Gosvāmī replied, “The Supreme Personality of Godhead has saved me from the sinful life of material existence. By His desire, my last piece of material attraction is now gone.”
Jayapatākā Swami: So, Sanātana Gosvāmī had severed his attachment to anything material by giving up his valuable woolen blanket.
Thus ends the Part 2 of the chapter entitled, Sanātana Gosvāmī Considers His Last Piece of Material Attraction Gone Under the section: Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu Instructs Sanātana Gosvāmī in the Science of the Absolute Truth
