Sanātana Gosvāmī Considers His Last Piece of Material Attraction Gone

Under the section: Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu Instructs Sanātana Gosvāmī in the Science of the Absolute Truth

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.72

madhyāhne tapana-miśra-gṛhe prabhura bhojana, sanātanera prabhu-bhuktaśeṣa-prāpti

madhyāhna kariyā prabhu gelā bhikṣā karibāre
sanātane lañā gelā tapana-miśrera ghare

Translation: After bathing at noon, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu went to the house of Tapana Miśra for lunch. He took Sanātana Gosvāmī with Him.

Jayapatākā Swami: Sanātana Gosvāmī ate Lord Caitanya’s remnants.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.73

pāda-prakṣālana kari’ bhikṣāte vasilā
‘sanātane bhikṣā deha’—miśrere kahilā

Translation: After washing His feet, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu sat down for lunch. He asked Tapana Miśra to supply Sanātana Gosvāmī lunch also.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.74

miśra kahe,—‘sanātanera kichu kṛtya āche
tumi bhikṣā kara, prasāda tāṅre diba pāche’

Translation: Tapana Miśra then said, “Sanātana has some duty to perform; therefore he cannot accept lunch now. At the conclusion of the meal, I shall supply Sanātana with some remnants.”

Jayapatākā Swami: Sanātana Gosvāmī would take the remnants of Sri Caitanya Mahāprabhu and therefore he is using this excuse that Tapana Miśra had told Lord Caitanya to take prasāda first.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.75

bhikṣā kari’ mahāprabhu viśrāma karila
miśra prabhura śeṣa-pātra sanātane dila

Translation: After eating, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu took rest for a while. Tapana Miśra then gave Sanātana Gosvāmī the remnants of food left by Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Jayapatākā Swami: Sanātana Gosvāmī was feeling himself blessed to get the prasāda remnants of Caitanya Mahāprabhu.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.76

miśra sanātane dilā nūtana vasana
vastra nāhi nilā, teṅho kaila nivedana

Translation: When Tapana Miśra offered Sanātana Gosvāmī a new cloth, he did not accept it. Instead, he spoke as follows.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.77

vaiṣṇavocchiṣṭa purātana vasana-grahaṇe sanātanera icchā

“more vastra dite yadi tomāra haya mana
nija paridhāna eka deha’ purātana”

Translation: “If you want to give me some cloth according to your desire, please give me an old cloth you have used.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Sanātana Gosvāmī didn’t want to accept a new cloth, he was happy to accept a remnant cloth used by Tapana Miśra.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.78

ekakhaṇḍa vastrake duikhaṇḍa bahirvāsa o taducita ḍora-kaupīne vibhāga

tabe miśra purātana eka dhuti dila
teṅho dui bahirvāsa-kaupīna karila

Translation: When Tapana Miśra gave Sanātana Gosvāmī a used dhotī, Sanātana immediately tore it into pieces to make two sets of outer cloth and underwear.

Jayapatākā Swami: Sanātana Gosvāmī was dressing like a Bābājī, only taking half a dhotī and a kaupīna.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.79

mahārāṣṭrīya viprasaha sanātanera milana

mahārāṣṭrīya dvije prabhu milāilā sanātane
sei vipra tāṅre kaila mahā-nimantraṇe

Translation: When Caitanya Mahāprabhu introduced the Maharashtrian brāhmaṇa to Sanātana, the brāhmaṇa immediately invited Sanātana Gosvāmī for full meals.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the Maharastrian brāhmaṇa who was assisting Lord Caitanya in His journey to Prayaga and Vārāṇasī, he was introduced to Sanātana Gosvāmī, immediately he wanted to serve Sanātana Gosvāmī, inviting him to take full meals at his house.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.80

kāśīvāsakāle sanātanake viprera svagṛhe pratyaha nimantraṇa

“sanātana, tumi yāvat kāśīte rahibā
tāvat āmāra ghare bhikṣā ye karibā”

Translation: The brāhmaṇa said, “My dear Sanātana, as long as you remain at Kāśī, please accept lunch at my place.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, the Maharastrian brāhmaṇa was very eager to serve Sanātana Gosvāmī, he invited him to come for prasāda.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.81

sanātanera sthūlabhikṣāya asammati, mādhukarī-bhikṣāya icchā

sanātana kahe,—“āmi mādhukarī kariba
brāhmaṇera ghare kene ekatra bhikṣā laba?”

Translation: Sanātana replied, “I shall practice the process of mādhukarī. Why should I accept full meals in the house of a brāhmaṇa?”

Purport: The word mādhukarī comes from the word madhukara, which refers to bees collecting honey from flower to flower. A mādhukarī is a saintly person or a mendicant who does not accept a full meal at one house but begs from door to door, taking a little food from each householder’s place. In this way he does not overeat or give householders unnecessary trouble. A person in the renounced order may beg but not cook. His begging should not be a burden for the householders. The mādhukarī process is strictly to be followed by a bābājī, that is, one who has attained the paramahaṁsa stage. This practice is still current in Vṛndāvana, and there are many places where alms are offered. Unfortunately, there are many beggars who have come to Vṛndāvana to accept alms but not follow the principles of Sanātana Gosvāmī. People try to imitate him and lead an idle life by practicing mādhukarī. It is almost impossible to strictly follow Sanātana Gosvāmī or Rūpa Gosvāmī. It is better to accept food offered to Kṛṣṇa in the temple than to try to imitate Sanātana Gosvāmī and Rūpa Gosvāmī.

yuktāhāra-vihārasya
yukta-ceṣṭasya karmasu
yukta-svapnāvabodhasya
yogo bhavati duḥkha-hā

“He who is regulated in his habits of eating, sleeping, recreation and work can mitigate all material pains by practicing the yoga system.” (Bg. 6.17)

The ideal sannyāsī strictly follows the ways practiced by the Gosvāmīs.

Jayapatākā Swami: It is recommended here that we should not imitate Rūpa and Sanātana Gosvāmīs to do begging from door to door, better we take prasāda in temple. In this way we can achieve Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Rūpa and Sanātana they were going begging door to door.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta, Madhya-līlā 20.82

sanātanera yukta-vairāgye prabhura ānanda

sanātanera vairāgye prabhura ānanda apāra
bhoṭa-kambala pāne prabhu cāhe bāre bāra

Translation: Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu felt unlimited happiness to observe Sanātana Gosvāmī’s strict following of the principles of sannyāsa. However, He repeatedly glanced at the woolen blanket Sanātana Gosvāmī was wearing.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Sanātana Gosvāmī was having some attachment for his woolen blanket and how Lord Caitanya was looking at the blanket. Lord Caitanya could see what attachment he may have. He wanted to do everything to please Kṛṣṇa.

Thus ends the Part 1 of the chapter entitled, Sanātana Gosvāmī Considers His Last Piece of Material Attraction Gone Under the section:
