Hare Kṛṣṇa! Dear Devotees! Special Caitanya lila class:

This is a continuation of the Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya book. Today's chapter is entitled as:

Pastimes in Gadādhara’s Garden

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.112

tabe (nityānanda) jagannātha heri’ harṣa sarva-gaṇe
ānande calilā gadādhara-daraśane

Jayapatākā Swami: Then Lord Nityānanda, He had the blissful darśana of Lord Jagannātha and all His servitors. Then Lord Nityānanda joyfully went to have darśana of Gadādhara Paṇḍita.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.113

gadādhara-gṛhe nityānanda—

nityānanda-gadādhare ye prīti antare
tāhā kahibāre śakti īśvare se dhare

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Nityānanda held Gadādhara Paṇḍita in such heartfelt affection that it is only possible for the Supreme Personality of Godhead, to describe that fully.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.114

gadādhara-bhavanastha parama-mohana śrī-gopīnātha vigrahake śrī-caitanyadevera kroḍe dhāraṇa—

gadādhara-bhavane mohana gopīnātha
āchena, ye hena nanda-kumāra sākṣāta

Jayapatākā Swami: In the house of Gadādhara Paṇḍita was the all-attractive feature of Gopīnātha. He just by seeing Him was like directly seeing the son of Nanda Mahārāja.

Purport (By His Divine Grace Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura Śrīla Prabhupāda): The Deity of Śrī Gopīnātha worshiped by Śrī Gadādhara Paṇḍita is still present in one ṭoṭā, or garden, in Śrī-kṣetra. This Yameśvara-ṭoṭā is situated southwest of Śrī Jagannātha temple on the sands of the ocean.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.115

āpane caitanya tāne kariyāchena kole
ati pāṣaṇḍī o se vigraha dekhi’ bhule

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya once personally embraced that Deity of Gopīnātha. Even an extreme atheist, when they see that deity, they forget everything.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.116

dekhi’ śrī-muralī-mukha aṅgera bhaṅgimā
nityānanda-ānanda-aśrura nāhi sīmā

Jayapatākā Swami: When Lord Nityānanda Prabhu looked at Śrī Gopīnātha’s beautiful face, which was adorned by a flute to His mouth, and His body was bent in an attractive feature. Lord Nityānanda prabhu, His tears of love knew no limit and could not be checked.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.117

svīya bhavane nityānandera vijaya-śravaṇe gadādharera bhāgavata - pāṭha – parityāga kariyā nityānanda-samīpe āgamana—

nityānanda-vijaya jāniñā gadādhara
bhāgavata-pāṭha chāḍi’ āilā satvara

Jayapatākā Swami: When Gadādhara Paṇḍita understood that Lord Nityānanda had arrived, he immediately left his recitation of Śrīmad-bhāgavatam and came to receive Lord Nityānanda.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.118

duṅhe mātra dekhiyā duṅhāra śrī-vadana
galā dhari’ lāgilena karite krandana

Jayapatākā Swami: As soon as they could see the face of each other, they embraced putting their arms around the neck of the other, and began to cry. We can see how Lord Nityānanda and Gadādhara prabhu, they had spontaneous affection for each other. Actually in Kṛṣṇa-līlā Lord Balarāma did not have much association with Rādhārāṇī but in Caitanya-līlā Lord Nityananda expressed His extreme affection for Gadādhara Paṇḍita and vice versa.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.119

sākṣāte paraspara sambhāṣaṇa—

anyo’nye dui prabhu kare namaskāra
anyo’ṇye doṅhe bale mahimā duṅhāra

Jayapatākā Swami: The two Lords offered each other obeisances, and They glorified each other.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.120

doṅhe bale,—“āji haila locana nirmala”
doṅhe bale,—“āji haila jīvana saphala”

Jayapatākā Swami: They both exclaimed, “Today My eyes have become purified” and They both exclaimed that, “today My life has become successful!”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.121

bāhya jñāna nāhi dui prabhura śarīre
dui prabhu bhāse bhakti-ānanda-sāgare

Jayapatākā Swami: The two Lords lost consciousness of Their body and then They were absorbed in Their internal ecstasy and were floating in oceans of ecstatic devotion.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.122

hena se haila prema-bhaktira prakāśa
dekhi’ catur-dike paḍi’ kānde sarva dāsa

Jayapatākā Swami: When the devotees surrounding Them saw Their manifestation of ecstatic love, they also began to cry.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.123

ki adbhuta prīti nityānanda-gadādhare
ekera apriya āre sambhāṣā nā kare

Jayapatākā Swami: How wonderful was the affection between Lord Nityānanda and Gadādhara Paṇḍita! Neither of Them would ever speak to anyone who was disliked by the other.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.124

gadādharera saṅkalpa-nityānanda nindakera mukha adṛśya—

gadādhara-devera saṅkalpa ei-rūpa
nityānanda-nindakera nā dekhena mukha

Jayapatākā Swami: This was the vow of Gadādhara deva, that he would not see the face of one who offends or criticizes Lord Nityānanda.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.125

nityānanda-svarūpere prīti yāra nāñi
dekhā o nā dena tāre paṇḍita-gosāñi

Jayapatākā Swami: If someone who doesn’t have love or affection for Nityānanda Svarūpa, then Paṇḍita Gadādhara would avoid being seen or avoid meeting such a person.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.126

tabe dui-prabhu sthira hai’ eka-sthāne
vasilena caitanya-maṅgala-saṅkīrtane

Jayapatākā Swami: Thereafter the two Lords became pacified and sat down at that place to engage in the auspicious saṅkīrtana of Lord Caitanya.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.127

gadādhara-gṛhe śrī-nityānanda o śrī-caitanyera ānanda-bhojana—

tabe gadādhara-deva nityānanda-prati
nimantraṇa karilena—“āji bhikṣā ithi”

Jayapatākā Swami: Then Gadādhara Paṇḍita said to Lord Nityānanda Prabhu giving Him an invitation, “Today take Your meal here.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.128

nityānandera gauḍadeśa haite ānita taṇḍula gopīnāthera bhogārthe pradāna—

nityānanda gadādhara-bhikṣāra kāraṇe
eka māna cāula āniñāchena yatane

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Nityānanda had carefully brought to Gadādhara Paṇḍita, in order to take His meal, He brought 40 kilos (eka māna which means one mound of rice) of rice to offer to Lord Gopīnātha.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.129

ati sūkṣma śukla deva-yogya sarva-mate
gopīnātha lāgi’ āniñāche gauḍa haite

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Nityānanda brought very fine white rice, suitable to be offered to the deity. He brought this rice from Bengal to be offered to Lord Gopīnātha.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.130

āra ekakhāni vastra—raṅgima sundara
dui āni’ dilā gadādharera gocara

Jayapatākā Swami: Along with the rice, Lord Nityānanda had brought a beautiful colored cloth and gave it to Gadādhara Paṇḍita which he offered to Lord Gopīnātha.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.131

“gadādhara, e taṇḍula kariyā randhana
śrī-gopīnāthere diyā karibā bhojana”

Jayapatākā Swami: “O dear Gadādhara Paṇḍita, cook this rice, and, after offering it to Śrī Gopīnātha, it can be eaten it.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.132

taṇḍula dekhiyā hāse paṇḍita-gosāñi
“nayane ta’ e-mata taṇḍula dekhi’ nāñi

Jayapatākā Swami: On seeing the high-quality rice, Paṇḍita Gadādhara Gosāi laughed and said, “I have never seen such high quality rice like this before.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.133

e taṇḍula gosāñi, ki vaikuṇṭhe thākiyā
yatne āniñāchena gopīnāthera lāgiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: “This rice my dear Nityānanda Prabhu, Oh Gosāi! You must have brought this rice from Vaikuṇṭha, carefully bringing to offer to Śrī Gopīnātha.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.134

lakṣmī-mātra e taṇḍula karena randhana
kṛṣṇa se ihāra bhoktā tabe, bhakta-gaṇa”

Jayapatākā Swami: “Actually Lakṣmī devī cooks such rice for Lord Kṛṣṇa to eat. Then the devotees take His remnants.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.135

ānande taṇḍula praśaṁsena gadādhara
vastra lai’ gelā gopīnāthera gocara

Jayapatākā Swami: After joyfully glorifying the rice in this way, Gadādhara Paṇḍita took the cloth for offering to Lord Gopīnātha.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.136

divya-raṅga-vastra gopīnāthera śrī-aṅge
dilena, dekhiyāśobhā bhāsena ānande

Jayapatākā Swami: Gadādhara Paṇḍita decorated Lord Gopīnātha with the beautifully colored cloth covering His transcendental body and on seeing the beauty of the Lord, he floated in ecstasy.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.137

gadādharera randhana-kārya o ṭoṭā haite śāka-cayana—

tabe randhanera kārya karite lāgilā
āpane ṭoṭāra śāka tulite lāgilā

Jayapatākā Swami: Then Gadādhara Paṇḍita began cooking for the Lord and He personally picked the green leafy vegetables, śāka from his garden (ṭoṭa).

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.138

keha bone nāhi—daive haiyāche śāka
tāhā tuli’ āniyā karilā eka pāka

Jayapatākā Swami: No one had planted that green leafy vegetables, (śāka); it grew there naturally. So that vegetable was picked and cooked by Gadādhara Paṇḍita.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.139

teṅtula vṛkṣera yata patra sukomala
tāhā āni’ vāṭi tāya dilā loṇa-jala

Jayapatākā Swami: Gadādhara Paṇḍita picked soft leaves from the tetula tree or tamarind leaves. Then He ground the leaves and mixed salt water from the ocean (loṇajala).

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.140

tāra eka vyañjana karilā amla-nāma
randhana karilā gadādhara bhāgyavān

Jayapatākā Swami: The fortunate Gadādhara Paṇḍita then prepared a sour vegetable (amla-nāma) and He prepared that and He cooked that.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.141

gadādhara-kṛrtaka gopīnāthera agre bhoga-pradāna—

gopīnātha-agre niñā bhoga lāgāi
lāhena-kāle gauracandra āsiyā mililā

Jayapatākā Swami: As he placed the offerings before Lord Gopīnātha offering the preparations, at that Lord Śrī Gauracandra arrived there.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.142

gauracandrera āgamana o bhaktera nimantraṇe prīti-jñāpana—

prasanna śrī-mukhe ’hare kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa’ bali’
vijaya hailā gauracandra kutūhalī

Jayapatākā Swami: With His pleasant face and His mouth vibrating Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa, Lord Gauracandra arrived there very blissfully.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.143

‘gadādhara, gadādhara’, ḍāke gauracandra
sambhrame gadādhara vande pada-dvandva

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gauracandra then called out, “Gadādhara! Gadādhara!” and Gadādhara quickly came and offered his respectful obeisances to the two lotus feet of Lord.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.144

hāsiyā balena prabhu—“kena gadādhara!
āmi ki nā hai nimantraṇera bhitara?

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya smiled and said, “O Gadādhara, am I not included in your invitation?

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.145

āmi ta’ tomarā dui haite bhinna nai
nā dile o tomarā, balete āmi lai

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya said, “I am not different from either of You. Even if you don’t offer Me anything, I will take by force.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.146

nityānanda-dravya, gopīnāthera prasāda
tomāra randhana—mora ithe āche bhāga”

Jayapatākā Swami: “Things brought by Lord Nityānanda, Lord Gopīnātha’s prasāda remnants cooked by you, certainly I am entitled to a share.” So we can see how Lord Caitanya, He, Lord Nityānanda and Gadādhara Their pastimes are unfolding, so Lord Caitanya appeared just at the right time and claimed His share of Gopīnātha’s prasāda cooked by Gadādhara and brought by Lord Nityānanda.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.147

kṛpā-vākya śuni’ nityānanda, gadādhara
magna hailena sukha-sāgara-bhitara

Jayapatākā Swami: Hearing Lord Caitanya’s merciful comments Lord Nityānanda and Gadādhara Paṇḍita became merged in an ocean of transcendental happiness.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.148

gauracandrera agre prasāda-sthāpana—

santoṣe prasāda āni’ deva-gadādhara
thuilena gauracandra-prabhura gocara

Jayapatākā Swami: In great satisfaction, Śrī Gadādhara deva brought the prasāda and placed it before Lord Gauracandra.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.149

sarva-ṭoṭā vyāpileka annera saugandhe
bhakti kari’ prabhu punaḥ punaḥ anna vande

Jayapatākā Swami: The fragrance of the rice prasāda permeated/ spread out over the entire garden. In great devotion Lord Caitanya again and again offered prayers to the rice prasāda.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.150

prabhu bale,—“tina bhāga samāna kariyā
bhuñjiba prasāda-anna ekatra vasiyā”

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya said, “Divide this rice into three portions, and We will sit together and take this prasāda rice.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.151

nityānanda-svarūpera taṇḍulera prīte
vasilena mahāprabhu bhojana karite

Jayapatākā Swami: Being appreciative of the rice brought by Nityānanda Svarūpa, Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu sat down to eat prasāda.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.152

dui prabhu bhojana karena dui pāśe
santoṣe īśvara anna-vyañjana praśaṁse

Jayapatākā Swami: Gadādhara Paṇḍita and Lord Nityānanda sat on two side of the Lord Caitanya, who in great satisfaction glorified the rice and the vegetable preparation.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.153

prabhu bale,—“e annera gandhe o sarvathā
kṛṣṇa-bhakti haya, ithe nāhika anyathā

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu declared, “This rice fragrance has spread everywhere, by this rice certainly one gets Kṛṣṇa-bhakti, of this there is no doubt.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.154

gadādharera pāka-praśaṁsā—

gadādhara, ki tomāra manohara pāka
āmi ta’ e-mata kabhu nāhi khāi śāka

Jayapatākā Swami: “O Gadādhara Paṇḍita, Your cooking is so attractive, I have not had this kind of green leafy vegetable before.”

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.155

gadādhara, ki tomāra vicitra randhana
teṅtula-patrera kara e-mata vyañjana

Jayapatākā Swami: “O Gadādhara Prabhu, how wonderful is your cooking! You have made such a nice vegetable preparation with tamarind leaves.” Lord Caitanya had said that in some places He is always present, one of those places is where Gadādhara prabhu cooks the tamarind preparations. So, we can see that this preparation is specialty of Gadādhara prabhu

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.156

bujhilāṅa vaikuṇṭhe randhana kara tumi
tabe āra āpanāke lukāo vā keni”

Jayapatākā Swami: “I can understand that you cook in Vaikuṇṭha, spiritual world. So why are you hiding yourself?”

Purport (By His Divine Grace Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura Śrīla Prabhupāda): The daughter of Śrī Vṛṣabhānu cooks for Kṛṣṇa. Since Śrī Gadādhara Paṇḍita Gosvāmī displayed expertise in cooking offerings for Śrī Gopīnātha, Śrī Gaurasundara understood who he actually was and identified him as a cook of Vaikuṇṭha.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.157

ei mata santoṣete hāsya-parihāse
bhojana karena tina prabhu prema-rase

Jayapatākā Swami: As the three Lords laughed and joked in this way, They relished the mellows of ecstatic love as They ate in satisfaction. Śrīla Prabhupāda Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura has said that during the time of taking prasāda one should have light talks so that the prasāda would be easily digested.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.158

e-tina-janera prīti e-tine se jāne
gauracandra jhāṭa nā kahena kāro sthāne

Jayapatākā Swami: These three personalities, the affection They held for each other would be only known to Them. Lord Gauracandra would generally not discuss this with anyone else.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.159

bhaktagaṇera avaśeṣa-pātra luṇṭhana—

kata-kṣaṇe prabhu saba kariyā bhojana
calilena, pātra luṭa kaila bhakta-gaṇa

Jayapatākā Swami: After sometime, Lord Caitanya finished His meal, and then They would leave. The devotees then looted the remnants.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.160

gadādhara-bhavane śrī-gaura-nityānandera ānanda-bhojana-saṁvāda śravaṇa o pāṭhera phale kṛṣṇa-bhakti lābha—

e ānanda-bhojana ye paḍe vāśune
kṛṣṇa-bhakti haya, kṛṣṇa pāya sei jane

Jayapatākā Swami: Whoever hears or reads about these blissful eating pastimes, they achieve devotion for Lord Krsna and certainly those people achieve Lord Krsna.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.161

gadādhara śubha-dṛṣṭi karena yāhāre
se jānite pāre nityānanda-svarūpere

Jayapatākā Swami: Whoever Gadadhara Prabhu shows His auspicious glance, whoever receives Gadadhara Prabhu's auspicious glance, that person can know Nityānanda Svarūpa.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.162

nityānanda-svarūpo yāhāre prīta mane
laoyāyena gadādhara jāne se-i jane

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Nityananda Svarupa, whoever He thinks of affectionately, they are accepted by Sri Gadādhara and they only can know Śrī Gadādhara.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.163

hena-mate nityānanda-prabhu nīlācale
viharena gauracandra-saṅge kutūhale

Jayapatākā Swami: In this way, Lord Nityānanda enjoyed pastimes in Nīlācala with Lord Gauracandra very happily.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.164

nīlācale gaura-gadādhara o nityānandera ekatra basati—

tina-jana ekatra thākena nirantara
śrī-kṛṣṇa-caitanya, nityānanda, gadādhara

Jayapatākā Swami: In Jagannātha Purī, in Nīlācala, these three - Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya, Lord Nityānanda and Gadādhara Paṇḍita constantly would stay together.

Caitanya-bhāgavata Antya-khaṇḍa 7.165

jagannātho ekatra dekhena tina jane
ānande vihvala sabe mātra saṅkīrtane

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Jagannātha would see the three of Them together and They all became overwhelmed with ecstasy while performing saṅkīrtana, congregational chanting of the holy names.

(Summarised by) Jayapatākā Swami: So, today is Lord Gadādhara’s appearance day and He is actually the avatāra of Rādhārāṇī. In Kṛṣṇa-līlā, He was the daughter of Vṛṣabhānū, in Caitanya-līlā he was the disciples of Puṇḍarīka-premanīdhī who is the incarnation of Vṛṣabhānū. So, because in Kṛṣṇa-līlā, she was like the consort of Lord Kṛṣṇa, so the elder brother of the husband is not to be seen, the bāsu. Therefore Radharani did not appear openly before Lord Balarāma. But in Caitanya-līlā, since She comes in the male form as Gadādhara Prabhu, this did not apply. Therefore, Lord Caitanya, Lord Nityānanda and Gadādhara are always together. I heard today, when Kṛṣṇa said He wanted to come, taking the color of Rādhārāṇī, He wanted to have Rādhārāṇī’s heart. So Rādhārāṇī said I will give my heart, but You should be careful. We see Lord Caitanya having the heart of Rādhārāṇī, He would sometimes go almost crazy feeling great love and separation of Rādhārāṇī for Kṛṣṇa. Sometimes He would cry outside the Jagannātha temple, sometimes He would see the ocean and He would think it to be Jamunā and dive into the ocean. Sometimes he would hold His face on the wall, actually He had the heart of Rādhārāṇī we say many times but actually it is really intense, that Kṛṣṇa had so much of prema-bhakti for Kṛṣṇa. Lord Caitanya's pastimes are of that nature, in this pastime of Lord Caitanya taking His lunch with Nityānanda-prabhu and Gadādhara prabhu shows a kind of sweet relationship between the two or the three. Hare Kṛṣṇa!
