Introduction: Today we had a TOVP Creative Committed Exhibition meeting from 7.30 to 9.30 Then our physical therapy and then all day long, 10 am till 8 pm the Indian Governing Council Bureau meeting, which happened in Pune, and I attended by internet. Then I took some prasad at 8, and now I am here to give a class. I hope that I would get some transcendental bliss!

Lord’s Abhiṣeka by Devotees [Part-6]

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 5.44

ānītair atilaghu-jahnu-kanyakāyāḥ
pāthobhiḥ surabhi-subāsitaiḥ prakāmam
karpūrāguru-guru-gandha-sārabadbhiḥ
śrīvāsas tam abhiṣiṣeca hṛṣṭa-cittaḥ

yāhā haūka, edike kāminīgaṇa satvara jābī jala ānayana karile śrīvāsa tāhāte kapūra aguru prabhṛti gurutara gandha drabya nikṣepa kariyā tadbārā hṛṣṭacitte mahāprabhura abhiṣeka kārya nirbāha karilena.

Jayapatākā Swami: Then on one side, the Vaiṣṇavī women brought pots of Ganges water, so that Śrīvāsa could offer that as abhiṣeka. In the water there was camphor, āgaru and other very valuable scents, which were placed in the water, and that, very joyfully Śrīvāsa bathed Mahāprabhu with the abhiṣeka, offering all these valuable items.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 9.27

śeṣe śrī-karpūra catuḥsama-ādi
diyāsajja karilena sabe prema-yukta haiyā

Jayapatākā Swami: Then the water was mixed with auspicious camphor and four kinds of scents, etc. and the water was thus procured, and prepared very joyfully, combined with pure love and devotion.

The Hari-bhakti-vilāsa (6.115) quotes the Garuḍa Purāṇa as follows: “Catuḥsama consists of two portions of musk, four portions of sandalwood, three portions of kuṅkuma, and one portion of camphor.”

Catuḥsama kī jaya! Caitanya Mahāprabhu abhiṣeka jaya! Hare Kṛṣṇa!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 9.28

mahā-jaya-jaya-dhvani śuni’ cāri bhite
abhiṣeka-mantra sabe lāgilā paḍite

Jayapatākā Swami: The tumultuous sound of “Jaya! Jaya”, ladies chanting ulu-dhvani, here they don’t know! (Then the ladies did ulu-dhvani in the audience) and women chanting Haribol! Haribol! Jaya! Haribol! And all around the tumultuous sound was vibrating. And many began chanting the abhiṣeka mantras which they recited, reading from the scripture.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 9.29

sarvādye śrī-nityānanda ‘jaya jaya’ bali’
prabhura śrī-śire jala dilā kutuhalī

Jayapatākā Swami: First Śrī Nityānanda Prabhu sang Jaya! Jaya, and He poured on the Lord’s divine head, some of this scented Ganges water with great joy.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 1.97

(punar nepathye tumula-nirghoṣa-poṣakaḥ puruṣa-sūkta-pārāyaṇa-surasaḥ kalakalaḥ)

Jayapatākā Swami: From behind the scenes, tumultuous sweet sounds of Puruṣa-sūkta prayers could be heard.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 9.30

advaita-śrīvāsa-ādi yateka pradhāna
paḍiyā puruṣa-sūkta karāyena snāna

Jayapatākā Swami: Advaita, Śrīvāsa and other exalted devotees, they bathed the Lord while reciting the puruṣa-sūkta mantras. So this puruṣa-sūkta glorifies the Lord’s universal form as having thousand heads, thousand eyes, thousand feet and it contains all the living entities. So, He pervades the whole universe, completely to give it excellence, as being completely independent, He expands Himself beyond the universe. So the first prayers are:

oṁ sahasra-śīrṣā puruṣaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ sahasra-pāt
sa bhūmiṁ viśvato vṛtvāty atiṣṭhad dāsāṅgulam

Jayapatākā Swami: Like this the puruṣa-sūkta goes on as the Lord is unlimited

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 9.31

gaurāṅgera bhakta saba mahā-mantra-vit
mantra paḍi’ jala ḍhāle hai’ haraṣita

Jayapatākā Swami: So Lord Gaurāṅga’s devotees were all expert at chanting the mahā-mantra and they chanted different mantras and joyfully poured water on the head of the Lord.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 9.32

mukundādi gāya abhiṣeka-sumaṅgala
keha kānde, keha nāce, ānande vihvala

Jayapatākā Swami: The devotees headed by Mukunda dāsa sang auspicious abhiṣeka songs and some devotees were crying and some devotees danced and some became overwhelmed in ecstasy.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 9.33

pati-vratā-gaṇa kare `jaya-jayakāra’
ānanda-svarūpa citta haila sabāra

Jayapatākā Swami: The chaste married women made auspicious sounds like ulu-dhvani, jaya jaya-kār! Everyone’s hearts became overwhelmed with ecstasy.

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 9.34

vasiyā āchena vaikuṇṭhera adhīśvara
bhakta-gaṇe jala ḍhāle śirera upara

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Gaurāṅga, the Lord of Vaikuṇṭha, He was seated on the throne of Viṣṇu and the devotees poured Ganges water on His head, in great bliss.

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 5.45

drāghiṣṭhair niravadhi-śaśvad-unmiṣadbhis
tejobhiḥ kaṇaka-nikāśa-rāji-gauraiḥ
atyacchā-bapuṣi patanty amuṣya dhārā
gaurāṅgī-kri
yata ibābhiṣeka-bārām

tatkālīna mahāprabhura kanaka sadṛśa gauravarṇa aṅgera atiśaya tejorāśi dvārā ye sakala abhiṣeka bāridhārā aṅge patita haïtechila se samudāyaï gauravarṇatva prāpta haïla

Jayapatākā Swami: At that time, Gaurāṅga Mahāprabhu was appearing like gold, in His golden colored body and golden effulgence which was emanating from Him, all the abhiṣeka waters, after falling from His body, also became gold in color because of the intense, gold, effulgence emanating from His body.

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya 5.46

gaṅgānāṃ kalasa-śatena saj-jalānāṃ
seko’yaṃ jhaṭiti paṭībad aṅga-bhājam
nirbyūḍho’bhabad anubhū
ya taj jalaṃ bhūr
ucchbāsaiḥ subahu-kṛtārthatāṃ jagāma

takhana pṛthivī gauracandrera aṅga vigalita abhiṣikta bāri dhārā sakala aṅge paṭī vastrera nyāya dhāraṇa kariyā āpanāke kṛtārtha mānite lāgilena

Jayapatākā Swami: Then the earth, taking the abhiṣeka bathing water which came over the body of Gauracandra, was excepted by mother earth as her glory, and she was very grateful and happy for the blessing.

Caitanya Candrodaya Nāṭaka 1.97-98

kaliḥ (nirbarṇya): aho atyadbhutam
ete brahma-kamaṇḍalor iva ghaṭān niḥsyandamānair muhuḥ
sargaṅgā-jala-nirjharair abirala-klinnāt sumeror iva
gaurāṅgasya śarīrato nipatatāṃ bhūmaṇḍalocchbāsināṃ
niḥsyandāḥ sumahābhiṣeka-pa
yasāṃ sasruś catasro diśaḥ

Jayapatākā Swami: So, this is written in Sanskrit which I don’t know, so I will take the translation here.

Kali is watching: “Oh wonderful! Wonderful! (Guru Mahārāja repeats with great enthusiasm and asks the repeater to also do so) just as the Ganges flows down from Brahmā’s kamaṇḍalu constantly, flooding mount Sumeru, the great abhiṣeka water flowing from Lord Gaurāṅga’s body falls on the earth, and floods the four directions of the world!”

Haribol! Gaurāṅga!

Caitanya-Bhāgavata Madhya-khaṇḍa 9.35

nāma-mātra aṣṭottara-śata ghaṭa jala
sahasra ghaṭe o anta nā pāi sakala

Jayapatākā Swami: There were supposed to be 108 pots of water, but actually a thousand pots could not hold all the water that appeared there! You see, ordinarily for some auspicious occasions, the number 108 is considered important, but in this case it was hundreds and hundreds! The procedure for bathing the Lord is mentioned and described in the Hari-bhakti-vilāsa (19.88) as follows:

“According to one’s capacity, one should bath the Lord with gold, silver, copper, bell metal, or clay pots of water numbering one thousand, five hundred, two hundred fifty, one hundred eight, sixty-four, thirty-two, sixteen, or four.”

Thus, ends the chapter entitled “Lord’s abhiṣeka by devotees” under the section 21-hour ecstasy. Haribol!

Nitāi Gaurāṅga! Nitāi Gaurāṅga! Nitāi Gaurāṅga! Nitāi Gaurāṅga!

So what questions are present? We have more devotees on internet tonight than before! Welcome!! (259 as of now) Any questions?
