20110929 His. Holiness. Jayapatākā Swāmi Mahārāja gave a talk in Tirupati, India [360p]

Gurumahārāja:

mūkaṁ karoti vācālaṁ

paṅguṁ laṅghayate girim

yat-kṛpā tam ahaṁ vande

Śrī gurum dina tarinam

paramānanda-mādhavam

Śrī Caitanya Iswaram

Hari Oṁ Tatsat

So, today, on this auspicious day, we are also observing the initiation ceremony, and there are some devotees from Tirupati and also other parts, who are taking initiation. Before initiation, there is a stage called shelter of the guru, and some devotees are also taking shelter. The idea is, while taking shelter, one should completely shelter the list… a check list for initiation. And practice what it is like to be initiated. Those who take guru ashray or shelter of the guru, they follow all the rules of the initiated devotee, but there are no vows. If one wants, they can also choose not to be initiated. So, taking initiation is a …4.41… Of course, śāstra says, we should take initiation from bona fide disciplic succession. So, once one takes initiation, they should stick with that process and that guru. Also, there was a system before taking the guru ashray called guru aspiring, and one can take that if in the future sometime they like to take shelter and also take initiation from the guru. So, also after taking the first initiation, which is called the second birth, there is also a second initiation which one is… it’s called the “jagat janma” or third birth. And there one gets a secret mantra from a guru. That’s called the gāyatrī mantra. So, there are seven mantras. They have to be chanted ten times each, three times a day. Now Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra, you can, if you are short one day, you can make it up the next day. But gāyatrī mantra you should leave… you should chant it on the day that is prescribed, as close to the authorized time as possible. Who here has taken the vows of the first initiation? Anyone who has not taken their vow?

Ok, so you should follow this vows your whole life. If for some reasons sometimes accidentally you don’t follow, there is no prayischita. One should give up the bad habit and start again. Devotional service is the greatest prayichita. So, you do your part I think; that guru ….10.05…….. and what ten offences that you should avoid. And here the yajña is the witness. The guru is witness. So many siksha guru’s and the other devotees are witness. Also, the big poles are witness. The… also the paramātmā… so, when you take the vows, it’s is a very serious thing. So, it’s also that in this Kaliyuga there are many, many defects, but there is one good quality, “Kīrtana deva Kṛṣṇasya mukta saṅga param vrajet”. That we should chant the holy names of Kṛṣṇa in kīrtan. So, who is taking the first initiation? Raise your hands. And who is taking shelter? And who is taking aspiring?

Devotee: Almost everybody.

Gurumahārāja: So, aspiring means that you want to take initiation in the future. You may not be able to fully follow all the rules, or all the japa at present, but you would like the mercy of the guru, that you can eventually become qualified. And there is no vows. So, its mainly for the children of devotee, the congregational members, and those who like to also be recognized by the guru. So, they are also considered as type of spiritual children of the guru.

So, first those who are going to take the first initiation, please keep your hand around your right ear. Ladies should move the sari away from the ear and just listen. The ammās keep the ear open. Are you ready? The ear should not be covered by your sari.

So, so much you ladies…………. They want to hear with their right ear, not cover it. If it is covered…  what can I do?

Hare Kṛṣṇa

Hare Kṛṣṇa

Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa

Hare Hare

Hare Rāma

Hare Rāma

Rāma Rāma

Hare Hare ……………………………….. (repeated by devotees)

You are all here?

So, this is not a secret mantra. So, you can give it out loud, but the gāyatrī mantra is secret. We have to give it in a private place.
