Śrī-caitanyā-bhakta-nindā - Criticism of the Non-devotees of Lord Caitanya

Śrī Caitanya-candrāmṛtam Chapter 5.43

gauravimukha vyaktira kula, vāgmitā, śruta, śrī o brāhmaṇatāya dhikkāra

Condemnation of the high family, eloquence, learning, beauty and brahmincal nature of those averse to Lord Caitanya

dhig astu kulam ujjvalaṁ dhig api vāgmitāṁ dhig yaśo
hig adhyayanam ākṛtiṁ nava-vayaḥ śriyaṁ cāstu dhik

Mādhurya-rasavigraha gopījanavallabha śrī-kṛṣṇa kali-yuge hemāṅgī śrī-rādhāra bhāvakānti saha ye vipralanta-rasamaya-vigraha śrī-gaurāṅga-svarūpe prakaṭita haiyāchena, tini yadi upāsita nā hana, tāhā haile sadācārasampanna satkule dhik, vāgmitāya dhik, yaśeo dhik, vedādi śāstrādhyayane dhik, saundarya, navīna vayasa, aiśvaryeo dhik, vihita upanayanādi saṁskārasamanvita dvijatvakeo dhik evaṁ parama-nirmala brahmacaryādi āśrama o yoga-yāga-vairāgyādikeo dhik.

Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura’s Translation: The form of conjugal mellow, Gopījanvallabha (Śrī Kṛṣṇa), has accepted the mood and effulgence of golden limbed Śrī Rādhā and manifested the mellow form of separation and appeared as Śrī Gaurāṅga. If He is not worshiped, then condemnation to the birth in the good family with good practices, condemnation to eloquence, condemnation also to fame, condemnation to the study of the Vedic scriptures, condemnation also to the well-constructed limbs such as hands and legs, full youthfulness and wealth, condemnation even to the purificatory process of accepting sacred thread and so on in the twice-born status, condemnation also even to the greatly pure āśramas headed by brahmacarya, yoga, renunciation and performance of the Vedic rituals.

Jayapatākā Swami: All the material things, like good birth, good appearance, good education, good saṁskaras, the author is condemning all these as they create a false ego that they do not need to take the shelter of Lord Gaurāṅga. Here it describes how Lord Kṛṣṇa, He combines with Rādhārāṇī and He comes as Lord Gaurāṅga who is always absorbed in separation. Lord Caitanya, He was feeling that the students in Navadvīpa were not taking Him seriously because of all these opulences. So, one may have various opulences of the material world but if for some reason one does not take shelter of Lord Caitanya, then they are very unfortunate. Lord Caitanya, He was present only 500 years ago and many intelligent people followed His lotus feet. So, He taught how to love Kṛṣṇa by feeling separation.

Śrī Caitanya-candrāmṛtam Chapter 5.44

nārāyaṇa-pārṣadavṛnderao praśaṁsārha anucaragaṇa-parivṛta gaurahari sukṛtihīna vyaktira praṇayera aviṣaya

Gaurahari who is surrounded by the followers who are worthy of praise even by the associates of Nārāyaṇa, is not the object of love by those devoid of piety

aho vaikuṇṭha-sthair api ca bhagavat-parṣada-varaiḥ
sa-romāñcaṁ dṛṣṭā yad-anucara-vakreśvara-mukhāḥ
mahāścarya-premojjvala-rasa-sadāveśa-vivaśī-
kṛtāṅgās taṁ gauraṁ katham akṛta-puṇyaḥ praṇayatu

Ati camatkāra premojjvalarasera aviccheda-āveśe vivaśāṅga vakreśvara-pramukha ye sakala mahātmāke darśana kariyā vaikuṇṭhastha nārāyaṇa-pārṣadagaṇao pulakitāṅga hana, sei madhura-rasa-rasika mahātmagaṇa yāṅhāra anucara, sei śrī-gaurasundarake sukṛtihīna vyakti ki prakāre tāhāra praṇaya-viṣaya karite samartha haibe?

The hairs of the body of even the associates of Nārāyaṇa in the opulent abode of Vaikuṇṭha stand on end by seeing the associates of Lord Caitanya, headed by Vakreśvara and so on whose limbs are overwhelmed by the uninterrupted absorption of relishing the very wonderful mellow of conjugal love. How can that Gaurasundara be the object of love for those devoid of piety?

Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya, Gaurahari and His associates are always absorbed in love of Kṛṣṇa. So, all those people who have no piety, how can they relish this? This Gaurāṅga’s pastimes with His associates are very special and even the associates of Nārāyaṇa in Vaikuṇṭha, they feel ecstasy to see these associates. So, Vakreśvara Paṇḍita, he could dance for three days. So, these were all very special expansions of Lord Kṛṣṇa.

Śrī Caitanya-candrāmṛtam Chapter 5.45

ayācake premapradātā-śrī-gaurasundare anādarakārīi asura

A person is demon who has no regard for Śrī Gaurasundara who gifts love to those who do not ask

dātvāyaḥ kam api prasādam atha sambhāṣya smita-śrī-mukhaṁ
dūrāt snighda-dṛśā nirīkṣya ca mahā-premotsavaṁ yacchati
yeṣāṁ hanta kutarka-karkaśa-dhiyā tatrāpi nāty-ādaraḥ
sākṣāt purṇa-rasāvatāriṇi harau duṣṭā amī kevalam

Yini kāhākeo prasāda dāna kariyā īṣat hāsyayukta-śrī-mukhe śobhita hana, pare sambhāṣaṇa evaṁ snigdhadṛṣṭira dvārā dūra haite nirīkṣaṇa kariyā sarvotkṛṣṭa premadāna kariyā thākena, hāya! Sei sākṣāt pūrṇa premarasa-prakaṭanakārī śrī-gauraharike kutarka- karkaśa-buddhi-hetu yāhārā paramādara kare nā, tāhārāi ekamātra duṣṭa asura.

Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura’s Translation: By graciously favoring anyone, He is beautified with a gently smiling face. Then, later by speaking and seeing with a gentle vision from a far distance, He bestows an excellent happiness of love. He manifests directly that complete mellow of love. Alas! In such Gaurahari, there are persons who do not have great regard due to their intelligence hardened by useless arguments. They are only evil demons.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, You see, just as Kaṁsā had no appreciation for Lord Kṛṣṇa and people those who see Lord Caitanya but they don’t appreciate, they are described as evil demons because they have the opportunity to take shelter of Lord Gaurāṅga, but instead they don’t do that. So, although they have the opportunity, they are compared with the demons because they don’t take the mercy that the Lord is offering. So, Lord Caitanya, when He was travelling in South India, whenever He would see somebody on the road, He would just immediately go and hug them. So, He was giving out mercy freely without any hesitation. And people who are taking His mercy, they are considered very fortunate. Those who did not take His mercy are considered as foolish demons. So, we should be very careful to take Lord Caitanya’s mercy. The mercy is invaluable and Lord Caitanya is giving this priceless jewel freely without discrimination.

Tomorrow is the first day of Bhīṣma Pañcaka. For five days this special fast. Some people only take fruits and roots. I will take haviṣyanna. Except tomorrow I would take a kind of khichari.

Kṛṣṇer matir astu! ?
