Translation: “Gopāla Bhaṭṭa, the disciple of Śrīla Prabodhānanda and a favorite devotee of Lord Śrī Gaurasundara, is compiling the book Śrī Hari-bhakti-vilāsa, having satisfied Śrī Raghunatha dāsa and Rūpa Sanātana.”

Translation: Śrī Gopāla Bhaṭṭa was a great renunciate, affectionate and had an attractive form. He was a great poet and an expert in singing, playing musical instruments and dancing.

yāra kāvya śuni sukha bāḍhaye sabāra
prabodhānandera mahā-mahimā apāra
Translation: Hearing his poem, happiness of everyone increased. The glory of Prabodhānanda is limitless.
Jayapatākā Swami: These verses say that he was writing the Śrī Hari-bhakti-vilāsa and that was approved by Raghunātha dāsa and Rūpa and Sanātana.

Translation: In this way, everyone praised the qualities of Śrī Prabodhānanda and Gopāla.

Translation: They said how Gopāla Bhaṭṭa, had eagerly saw Lord Jagannātha in Nīlācala and how he was interested in learning vyākaraṇa and other scriptures.

yaiche pūrṇa-brahma kṛṣṇa-caitanye sevila
krame krame saba sei vipre nivedila
Translation: Gopāla Bhaṭṭa had shown sincerity in serving Śrī Krsna Caitanya, the absolute being. Thus, gradually, Śrī Veṅkaṭa Bhaṭṭa told the brāhmaṇa everything.

Translation: The elderly brāhmaṇa enjoyed the stories about Gopāla Bhaṭṭa and praising Śrī Veṅkaṭa Bhaṭṭa he returned home.

Translation: The parents of Gopāla Bhaṭṭa were greatly fortunate and offered Gopāla to the gracious lotus feet of Śrī Caitanya.

doṅhe saṅgopana hailā prabhu soṅariyā
Translation: They gladly permitted their son to go to Vṛndāvana and concealed themselves remembering Lord Caitanya.

Translation: After some time Gopāla Bhaṭṭa met Rūpa and Sanātana in Vṛndāvana.

Translation: Although Śrī Caitanya was in Nīlācala at that time because He is the supersoul residing in everyone heart, He could understand that Gopāla had gone to Vṛndāvana.
Jayapatākā Swami: Lord Caitanya as Paramātmā in everyone’s heart, He knew that Gopāla Bhaṭṭa has reached Vṛndāvana and taken the shelter of Rūpa and Sanātana.

Translation: One day he left the house of Miśra and went to meet Gopīnātha and Gadādhara.

Translation: The attraction Gauracandra felt towards Gadādhara was a precious emotion which is obtainable after a huge accumulation of pious deeds.

Translation: No one could understand what happiness lay in the relation between Prabhu Haridāsa and Prabhu Gadādhara.

Translation: Nor could they grasp what sort of love prevailed between Paṇḍita Śrī Gadādhara and Dāsa Gadādhara.

Translation: No human being exists who can adequately describe the loving relationship between Gadādhara and his Lord Śrī Gaurasundara.

Translation: Such is the glory of Gadādhara in whose house the Lord went and sat surrounded by His devotees.

Translation: “I feel concerned because I have not received any news from Vraja for a long time.”

Translation: Being very happy to hear, Mahāprabhu began to describe something about Gopāla to everyone.

Translation: “Śrī Veṅkaṭa Bhaṭṭa’s son Gopāla became a great scholar of all scriptures within a short time.”

Translation: “With the permission of his father, Gopāla had gladly served Me in various ways with special eagerness.”

Translation: “Rūpa and Sanātana are very dear to Me and they sent Me a letter as soon as Gopāla arrived there.”

Translation: Prabhu’s devotees were filled with great happiness to hear the Lord relate His very sweet story.

Translation: The Lord immersed Himself with the qualities of Rūpa and Sanātana and then sent His reply with care. He sent with a message, messenger who brought the letter, He sent back the reply with the same messenger.

Translation: He wrote in the letter, “I am glad to hear of Gopāla’s arrival in Vṛndāvana.”

Translation: The person went to the Gosvāmīs in Vṛndāvana, he delivered the ḍoras, kaupīnas and outer garments along with the letter.

Translation: I dare not attempt to describe how joyfully the Gosvāmīs received the gifts and letter from Mahāprabhu.

Translation: Śrī Rūpa and Śrī Sanātana were filled with love and they were both affectionate towards Śrī Gopāla Bhaṭṭa.

karite vaiṣṇava-smṛti haila bhaṭṭamane
sanātana-gosvāmī jānilā sei kṣaṇe
Translation: Gopāla Bhaṭṭa desired within his mind to write a Vaiṣṇava-śmṛti and Sanātana Gosvāmī knew that at that moment.

Translation: In the name of Gopāla, Śrī Sanātana Gosvāmī described the book Śrī Hari-bhakti-vilāsa.

Translation: Gopāla desired to worship Deity of the Lord. One night in a dream, Śrī Govinda deva instructed Rūpa about Gopāla’s desire.

śrī-rūpa-gosvāmī bhaṭṭe prāṇasama jāne
śrī-rādhā-ramaṇa-sevā karāilā tāne
Translation: Śrī Rūpa Gosvāmī considered Gopāla Bhaṭṭa to be his life and soul and gave him the service of Śrī Rādhā Ramaṇa.

gopāla-bhaṭṭera ceṣṭā ati-camatkāra
Translation: This subject shall be discussed in detail later – The endeavor of Gopāla Bhaṭṭa is very astonishing.

Translation: He liked to spend his days with Rūpa Sanātana discussing the loving pastimes of Śrī Krsna Caitanya.

sanātana preme paripūrita antara
apūrva śrī-rūpa-sakhye sukha nirantara
Translation: Śrī Gopāla’ Bhaṭṭa’s heart swelled with love for Sanātana while a deep friendship grew between him and Śrī Rūpa.

Translation: Śrī Gopāla Bhaṭṭa also relished his absorption in the service of Śrī Rādhā Ramaṇa, his life and soul.

Translation: By his qualities, Gopāla could fulfil anyone’s desires, and he soon became dear to everyone in Vṛndāvana whomever he saw.

sanātana-prema-pariplutāntaraṁ

Translation: According to an ancient saying: I pay my tribute to Śrī Gopāla Bhaṭṭa who became satisfied by the love and friendship of Sanātana and Rūpa Gosvāmī and who constantly remained absorbed in the service of Śrī Rādhā Ramaṇa.

Translation: Some have described these acts of Gopāla Bhaṭṭa, and some have not.

Translation: Not understanding these secrets, if anyone argues, then the seed of offense is sprouted in their heart.

Translation: Even the former great poets skilled in relishing transcendental humors, did not describe even though capable of describing.

Translation: They considered to describe it later but kept these descriptions (to be described later on by me) for the happiness of everyone.

Translation: Although Vṛndāvana Ṭhākura described the pastimes of Lord Caitanya, he did describe the Lord’s South Indian tour.

vyāsarūpa tiṅha tāṅra ke bujhe āśaya
paścāt varṇiba vedavyāsa aiche kaya
Translation: Who can understand the intentions of Vṛndāvana dāsa who is the form of Śrī Vyāsadeva: He said such a thing that Vyāsadeva will describe later on.

Translation: Śrī Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja humbling before Vyāsadeva, elaborately described South Indian tour etc...

rākhilena madhye madhye varṇana karite
varṇiba ye kavigaṇa tāhāra nimitte

Translation: But he also omitted certain parts so that later poets could elaborate on them just as a guru, after happily eating the foodstuffs, keeps remnants in the pot for his disciples to accept.

kutarka chāḍiyā āsvādaha bhāgyavanta
Translation: It is the tradition of the poets to describe without end. Giving up the arguments, fortunate persons relish.

Translation: The activities of the Lord and devotees of the Lord are described carefully in various ways.

Translation: Knowing the desire of the devotee to be strong, the Vaiṣṇava poets would write after addressing the Lord and the devotees.

kṛṣṇadāsa-kavirāja mahāhṛṣṭa haiyā
varṇilena grantha anekera ājñā laiyā
Translation: Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja, being very please, described in the book after taking permission from many.

śrī-gopāla-bhaṭṭa hṛṣṭa haiyā ājñā dila
granthe nija-prasaṅga varṇite niṣedhila
Translation: Śrī Gopāla Bhaṭṭa, happily ordered Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja to write the book but forbade him to write his account in the book.

kene niṣedhila ihā ke bujhite pare
nirantara atidīna māne āpanāre
Translation: Why did Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja forbade Gopāla Bhaṭṭa – who will understand this? Forever, he considered himself to be very lowly.

kavirāja tāra ājñā nāre laṅghibāra
nāmamātra likhe anya nā kare pracāra
Translation: Kṛṣṇadāsa Kavirāja did not disobey his order and thus only Gopāla’s name is mentioned but did not write any other account.

Translation: I have heard from an old Vaiṣṇava that Lokanātha Gosvāmī gave the same order that his name not be used.

Translation: Others have described something without meeting him. These are the transcendental qualities of Gopāla Bhaṭṭa.

Translation: I do not write here about the scholarly pastimes of Gopāla Bhaṭṭa in Vṛndāvana for fear the book will become too large.

vaiṣṇavera parama ānanda yāhā śuni
Translation: Śrī Gopāla Bhaṭṭa commented on the book Kṛṣṇa-karṇāmṛta which is pleasurable to all the Vaiṣṇavas.

Translation: At a much later time, Śrīnivāsa met him there in Vṛndāvana and Gopāla Bhaṭṭa being merciful towards him got his desires fulfilled.
Bhakti-ratnākara, First Wave, Text 231
śrīnivāsa śiṣya haiyā prabhura ādeśe
bhakti-grantha prakāśilā āsi gauḍadeśe
Translation: On the order of the Lord, Śrīnivasa becoming the disciple of Gopāla Bhaṭṭa propagated the devotional scriptures in Gauḍa.
Jayapatākā Swami: Śrīnivāsa ācārya has travelled to Nīlācala to take initiation from Lord Caitanya. When he reached Nīlācala, Lord Caitanya left and then he was told to take initiation from Gadādhara but then Gadādhara was sent back to Navadvīpa to get a fresh copy of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, like this he travelled back and forth and finally he was sent to Vṛndāvana to take initiation from Rūpa and Sanātana by the time he reached Vṛndāvana, Rūpa and Sanātana had just left so he fainted in the temple and he was awakened by Śrī Jīva Gosvāmī. Śrī Jīva told him that he should take initiation from Gopāla Bhaṭṭa Gosvāmī and Śrī Jīva Gosvāmī would be his sīkṣā-guru and teach him.
Bhakti-ratnākara, First Wave, Text 232
śrī-rūpādi dvārā prabhu śāstra prakāśilā
grantha prakāśite śrīnivāse śakti dila
Translation: Caitanya Mahāprabhu Prabhu empowered Śrī Rūpa and others to write and compile scriptures on Vaiṣṇava religion, for the propagation of those scriptures he empowered Śrīnivāsa.
Bhakti-ratnākara, First Wave, Text 233
ācārya abhinna śrī-ṭhākura-mahāśaya
nijakṛta śloke vyakta kaila śaktidvaya
Translation: Ācārya and Śrī Ṭhākura Mahāśaya were identical to each other. Ṭhākura Mahāśaya had revealed the powers of both Rūpa Gosvāmī and Śrīnivasa in his ślokas.
Bhakti-ratnākara, First Wave, Text 234
Translation: The ślokas by Ṭhākura Mahāśaya say: “When shall I be able to find Śrī Caitanyadeva, the ocean of kindness, within the range of my vision? His aim was to create many Vaiṣṇava scriptures through the intellect of Śrī Rūpa and others to later disseminate those scriptures to the people of the world through the efforts of Śrīnivāsa.”
Jayapatākā Swami: Ṭhākura Mahāśaya is Narottama and Ācārya means Śrīnivāsa Ācārya.
Thus, ends the chapter entitled, Gopāla Bhaṭṭa Meets Rūpa and Sanātana in Vṛndāvana and Initiates Śrīnivāsa Ācārya.
