Śrī Kṛṣṇa Caitanya Book

mūkaṁ karoti vācālaṁ paṅguṁ laṅghayate girim

So now we are in the lockdown 3.0 and so in Māyāpur forum there are new rules. And also, tomorrow, I am told that they are going to read them. We are in the orange zone. That is between the red zone and green zone. Kolkata is red zone. So, we are also continuing with our prasāda distribution and devotee care. But they don’t allow any religious gatherings. Although liquor shops are open! Ha! Ha! You can drink liquor but you cannot pray to God! I cannot understand! Anyway! So, we still don’t have any people allowed to visit the temple. So, we are very grateful that many devotees are attending these online classes, and I heard that in Bangladesh many listen to Bhakti Vijaya Bhāgavata Swami’s Gītā classes and some listen to my class. So, they also listen to the Māyāpur morning Bhāgavatam classes, and they also have their own classes. So, like this using internet, many temples are having different programs. In Andhra Pradesh, Telangana they have programs in Telugu. In Māyāpur we also have in Tamil, Russian, Chinese, Telugu and Bengali. So different Yātrās also have programs, Bhakti-vṛkṣa groups, Nāma-haṭṭa groups. I just saw how the Nāma-haṭṭa, they are distributing prasāda in different places. Prasāda, also some bhoga. They are giving khichrī, muri and biscuits. Some businessman donated some biscuits, so since it is vegetarian they are giving it out.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā, 17.91

prabhura nṛsiṃhābeśa-līlā –

paḍite āilā stave nṛsiṃhera nāma
śuniyā āviṣṭa hailā prabhu guṇadhāma

Translation: As he read the thousand names of the Lord, in due course the holy name of Lord Nṛsiṁha appeared. When Caitanya Mahāprabhu heard the holy name of Lord Nṛsiṁha, He became fully absorbed in thought.

PURPORT: The Caitanya-maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, describes this incident as follows: Śrīvāsa Paṇḍita was performing the śrāddha ceremony for his father, and as is customary, he was hearing the thousand names of Lord Viṣṇu. At that time Gaurahari (Lord Caitanya) appeared on the scene, and He also began to hear the thousand names of Viṣṇu with full satisfaction. When He thus heard the holy name of Lord Nṛsiṁha, Lord Caitanya became absorbed in thought, and He became angry like Nṛsiṁha Prabhu in His angry mood. His eyes became red, His bodily hairs stood on end, all the parts of His body trembled, and He made a thundering sound. All of a sudden, He took up a club, and people became greatly afraid, thinking, “We do not know what kind of offense we have now committed!” But then Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu adjusted His thoughts and sat down on His seat.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Lord Caitanya, He was saying where are the demons? Where are the demons? And He ran out in the street, carrying a club. All the people started running in fear. Lord Caitanya thought, He made all the people fearful. So, then He returned back to the house of Śrīvās. Actually, this is the deity we have in Māyāpur. This is Sthāṇu Narasiṁha, Narasiṁhadeva who just came out from the column, where are the demons? Where are the demons? He’s very angry, ready to fight! So somehow, that was the mood that Lord Caitanya had assumed. So, we have the deity of Narasiṁhadeva who is in that mood. That is normally too angry mood to worship. But because this is audārya-dhāma, this is the land of mercy, because Lord Caitanya manifested this pastime, so we have this deity here. And the guru of the makers said that since we were devotees of Kṛṣṇa and Lord Caitanya, we could have this deity. In other places, they may not have this deity. Very peaceful Narasiṁhadeva deity is Lakṣmī Narasiṁha. And this is the most angry Narasiṁha. Even more ugra than Ugra Narasiṁha. But Prahlāda he is not afraid. The Lord came to defend His devotee, looking where is the demon! Very interesting.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā, 17.92

pāṣaṇḍera ekamātra śāstā śrīnṛsiṃhera āveśe prabhura pāṣaṇḍi-drāvaṇa –

nṛsiṃha-āveśe prabhu hāte gadā lañā
pāṣaṇḍī mārite yāya nagare dhāiyā

Translation: In the mood of Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, Lord Caitanya ran through the city streets, club in hand, ready to kill all the atheists.

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.11.8

nṛsiṁhāveśa-saṅkruddho gadām ādāya satvaraḥ
dhāvati sma tato devo nṛsiṁhākāra-vikramaḥ

Translation: He became possessed with great rage and, seizing a club, He ran quickly, exhibiting the appearance and prowess of Narasiṁha.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 7.40

śunite śunite bhela nṛsiṃha-āveśa
krodhe rāṅgā dunayāna–urddha bhela keśa

Translation: As He kept listening & listening, He became in the mood of Narasiṁha. With His tow angry eyes, the hairs stood upwards.

Jayapatākā Swami: As the Lord was listening and listening, He became in the mood of Narasiṁhadeva. His two eyes became red with anger and His hairs were standing on end.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 7.41

pulakita saba aṅga—aruṇa varaṇa
ghana ghana huhuṅkāra siṁhera garjana

Translation: The hairs of His body stood erect. His body became red. He repeatedly roared like a lion.

Jayapatākā Swami: All the hairs on His body were erect. His body became reddish. And then He very deeply, He repeatedly made a roaring sound like a lion.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 7.42

ācambite gadā lañā dhāila satvara

Translation: Taking a gadā in His hand, He ran about. Seeing Him, the hearts of all the people trembled.

Jayapatākā Swami: Suddenly, He took a club in His hand and He ran around. When all the people saw Him, they began to tremble inside.

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya, 17.81

mahatīṁ gadāṁ kara-payoruhayoḥ
parigṛhya duḥsaham upetya mahaḥ
abhidhāvati sma pathi bhūmi-talaṁ
dalayan padāmbuja-valad-dalanaiḥ

Translation: Shining with unbearable radiance, holding in his hands a great club, he ran on the path, making the earth tremble by the great pounding of his lotus feet.

Jayapatākā Swami: Each deity has a particular mood. Lord Caitanya’s normal mood is extreme mercy. Lord Kṛṣṇa’s mood is very sweet. Every different personalities, different incarnations, have different moods. Lord Rāma played the part of a perfect king. Narasiṁhadeva is extremely angry. His devotee is being mistreated and abused, so He comes in an angry mood to punish the miscreants and to defend His devotee. Lord Caitanya suddenly, He came into that mood of Lord Narasiṁhadeva. So, we are observing the Narasiṁha Caturdaśī, in two days. And so, this is very appropriate that we are in the land of Lord Caitanya, He also assumed this incarnation as Narasiṁhadeva, He assumed that mood.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā, 17.93

nṛsīṁha-āveśa dekhi’ mahā-tejomaya
patha chāḍi’ bhāge loka pāñā baḍa bhaya

Translation: Seeing Him appearing very fierce in the ecstasy of Lord Nṛsiṁha, people ran from the street and fled here and there, afraid of His anger.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, all the people seeing Lord Caitanya in an angry mood like Lord Narasiṁhadeva, they ran away, fleeing here and there to escape His anger.

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya, 17.82

atha taṁ tathā-vidham avekṣya janāḥ
pathi dhāvanena paridīpta-javam
abhito’bhito bhayam upetya bhṛśaṁ
paridudruvur drutam atipracalāḥ

Translation: Seeing him in this state on the road, running at great speed, people because frightened and quickly ran here and there.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 7.43

palāya sakala loka-nā bāndhaye keśa
sahite nā pāre prabhura krodha-āveśa

Translation: Everyone became terrified and fled without tying their hairs. No one could tolerate the Lord's angry mood.

Jayapatākā Swami: So, all the people became very afraid and began to run away hurriedly. And therefore, even if their hair became loosened in fear of the Lord, they didn’t retie. They couldn’t tolerate the angry mood of the Lord, they became terrified, and seeing the Lord’s angry mood, they ran!

Murāri Gupta Kaḍaca 2.11.9

evaṁ bhūtaṁ ca taṁ devaṁ dṛṣṭvā sarve pradudruvuḥ
palāyana-parān dṛṣṭvā tatas tān nṛ-hariḥ punaḥ

Translation: When all the people saw the Lord in this condition, they fearfully ran away. Observing that they were fleeing, after a moment He again resumed His human-like form.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā, 17.94

prabhura krodha-sambaraṇa o karuṇā —

loka bhaya dekhi’ prabhura vāhya haila
śrīvāsa-gṛhete giyā gadā phelāila

Translation: Seeing the people so afraid, the Lord came to His external senses and thus returned to the house of Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura and threw away the club.

Jayapatākā Swami: Since the normal mood of Lord Caitanya was to be very merciful, and since hearing the name of Narasiṁhadeva in the Viṣṇu-sahasra-nāma, He came in the mood of Narasiṁhadeva, and went out in the street roaring like a lion, carrying a club in His hand. He saw that all the people were terrified, and He came back to His normal consciousness, and He was concerned that He had caused so much fear to the people. And He threw away the club.

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya, 17.83

sa tu tān palāyana-parān manujān
avalokayaṁs tad iha sausthyam adhāt
parihāya tāṁ sumahatīṁ ca gadām
agamac chanair bhavanam asya tadā

Translation: Seeing the people running away, he recovered and gave up the huge club. He slowly went to Śrīvāsa’s house.

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā, 17.95

śrīvāse kahena prabhu kariyā viṣāda
loka bhaya pāya, — mora haya aparādha

Translation: The Lord became morose and said to Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura, “When I adopted the mood of Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, people were greatly afraid. Therefore, I stopped, since causing fear among people is an offense.”

Jayapatākā Swami: This was His feeling. Let us see what Śrīvāsa has to say.

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya, 17.84

janatā-palāyana-vilokanataḥ
aparādhavān aham amutra jane

Translation: After a while, He returned to His normal state and discarded the club. Taking a seat peacefully, He said, "I do not know whether I have committed some offense."

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 7.44

palāyanapara loka dekhi’ narahari
kṣaṇeke chāḍila gadā āveśa sambari

Translation: Seeing everyone running, He at once dropped the club and withdrew His manifestation of Narasiṁha.

Jayapatākā Swami: Seeing the people running away, fleeing, the Lord Gaurāṅga at that time, released His club and withdrew His manifestation as Narasiṁhadeva.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 7.45

sarva-avatāra-bīja śacīra nandana
yakhane ye paḍe mane haya ta’ temana

Translation: The son of Śacī is the seed of all incarnations. Whenever and whatever He thinks of within His mind, He becomes like that.

Jayapatākā Swami: Śacīnandana, the son of mother Śacī, is the seed of all incarnations of Godhead. Whatever He thinks of, whichever incarnation He thinks of within His mind, He becomes like that.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 7.46

saba sambariyā prabhu basilā āsane
vismita haiyā kichu balilā vacane

Translation: Stopping everything, Lord Gaura sat on a seat. Surprised, Lord Gaura said:

Jayapatākā Swami: Stopping everything, Lord Gaurāṅga He sat on a seat. Surprised, He spoke something.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 7.47

nā jāni ki aparādha bhaigela āmāra
kibā cite anumāna bhela to-sabāra

Translation: "I don't know what what offense I just committed. Did I commit any offense? What do you all think in your hearts?"

Jayapatākā Swami: “I don’t know what offense I have just committed. You please tell me what you think. Have I committed some offense? What is your thought on this?”

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā, 17.96

śrīvāsera ukti, gauranāme aparādha kṣaya

śrīvāsa balena,—‘‘ye tomāra nāma laya
tāra koṭi aparādha saba haya kṣaya

Translation: Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura replied, “Anyone who takes Your holy name vanquishes ten million of his offenses immediately.

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 7.49

śrīvāsa kahila tomā dekhila ye jana
tāhāra haila saba bandha-vimocana

Translation: Śrīvāsa said: "Whoever saw You, they all became free from the bondage."

Jayapatākā Swami: So Śrīvāsa replied, “whoever saw You, whichever person saw You, that person is free from all material bondage.” Haribol!

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā, 17.97

gauradarśane saṁsāra-dhvaṁsa

aparādha nāhi, kaile lokera nistāra
ye tomā’ dekhila, tāra chuṭila saṁsāra ’’

Translation: “There was no offense in Your appearing as Nṛsiṁhadeva. Rather, any man who saw You in that mood was immediately liberated from the bondage of material existence.”

Jayapatākā Swami: So, Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura, said that “by seeing Lord Caitanya, they were freed from the bondage of repeated birth and death. So, You shouldn’t worry that You committed some offence. By seeing that mood of the Lord, people got freed or liberated.”

Caitanya Carita Mahā Kāvya, 17.85

na hi te kvacāpi bhagavān bhavitā
nikhilāparādha-śamanasya vibhoḥ
aparādha eṣa karuṇā-vibhavas
tava satyam ittham avadat svajanaḥ

Translation: His devotees said, “O Lord! You cannot commit an offense since you destroy all offenses. Saying it is an offense is merely your mercy. That is the truth.”

Jayapatākā Swami: The point made here was that the Lord is the destroyer of offences and sins. So, the Lord cannot commit any offence. Actually, He is thinking that this was an offence. That is a sign of His mercy. Lord Caitanya is the mercy avatāra. So, naturally, He doesn’t want to cause fear, that is the Narasiṁha avatāra. But since He is the source of all avatāras, all the moods of the different avatāras are within Him. So, when He heard the name of Lord Narasiṁhadeva, He fell into that mood. But then He recovered His natural mood which was one of mercy!

Translation: Hearing these words, everyone declared, "You have not committed an offense, O Lord of the universe! Indeed, if someone simply remembers Your appearance as Narasiṁha at any time, all the seeds of his sinful life become burned up. Oh Mānada (Your nature is to offer respect to all others) and thus how is it possible that You can make an offence of any kind?

Caitanya Maṅgala, Madhya-khaṇḍa, 7.48

e bola śuniñā sabe balila vacana-
ki tomāra aparādha—ki kaha kathana

Translation: Hearing these words, everyone said: " What is your offense? What do You Say?’’

Jayapatākā Swami: So, hearing these words, all the devotees present said, “What is Your offence? What do You say?”

Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta, Ādi-līlā, 17.98

eta bali’ śrīvāsa karila sevana
tuṣṭa hañā prabhu āilā āpana-bhavana

Translation: After saying this, Śrīvāsa Ṭhākura worshiped the Lord, who was then greatly satisfied and returned to His own home.

Jayapatākā Swami: So just by remembering the pastime of Lord Gaurāṅga, coming in the mood of Lord Narasiṁhadeva, one gets freed, they burn up all the sins. So, this is a very important pastime to remember, how Lord Caitanya, since He is Kṛṣṇa, He is the seed of all incarnations, and naturally all the incarnations’ mood is within Him. At the same time, sometimes He assumes the mood of Narasiṁhadeva, sometimes Varāhadeva, but His natural mood is to be very merciful! Lord Caitanya, Lord Nityānanda - when Śrīla Prabhupāda was arriving in Mexico City, he said how Nitāi Gaura’s mercy is so great, please take the shelter of Nitāi Gaura! Haribol! And he couldn’t speak anymore!

Thus ends the Chapter -
Lord Caitanya As Narasiṁha

Any questions?

Question: Dear Guru Mahārāja, Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda! Sometimes, in the temples they ask to which gotra we belong? Please Guru Mahārāja what shall we say? —Marīci dāsa.

Jayapatākā Swami: The devotees belong to the Acyuta-gotra, that is a special gotra of Lord Kṛṣṇa. The others are born in some brāhmaṇa gotra or they have brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya, they all have some gotra. But our gotra is Acyuta-gotra.

Question: Ojasvinī Rādhikā devī dāsī: Hare Kṛṣṇa dear Guru Mahārāja, (Guru Mahārāja: Hare Kṛṣṇa!) Please accept my respectful obeisances. (Guru Mahārāja: Accepted!) All glories to Śrīla Prabhupāda! (Guru Mahārāja: Jaya Prabhupāda!) Thank you very much for your immense inspiration. I heard that the only thing that Lord Gaurāṅga asked to His mother was to follow Ekādaśī. Why is it so important to follow Ekādaśī?

Jayapatākā Swami: I cannot say that this is the only thing that Lord Caitanya asked His mother. He asked for different things. But any way, Ekādaśī is considered to be the day of Hari. And they call that the harivāsara. The day of Hari. Anything you do on that day, is multiplied by a 100 time. And first, all the sins in the world have been put in the grains and pulses. So, on that day we don’t take any grains, cereals or pulses. And of course, if one does a full fast, then you can get certain extreme benefits. So, like, a person who was very sinful, he was the youngest child of a noble king. So as a result, finally he was doing so many sinful things, that he was thrown out of the house. Before he was a prince, he became disowned by his father. So, he did not have any money. He sold his royal ornaments and then he was broke. And even the prostitutes that he was with, they criticized him and said, you poor man, and they left him. And he had nothing. And then he was arrested for stealing, and then finding out that he was the king’s son, they let him go. After many times, they got fed up and beat him up. And so, then he fled to the forest and there he was – it is a long story, he was killing animals and eating. One day he met a ṛṣi in the forest who had just come out of bathing in the Ganges. The water was still dripping from his body. Some of the drops fell on that sinful man, and immediately he got purified. He asked the ṛṣi, I am very sinful what can I do to become free of all these things? He said, that coming up is the Mohinī Ekādaśī, the Ekādaśī that we are observing today. He said, if you completely fast, on this Ekādaśī, you will get freed from all your sins. So, then he said, I will observe. So, he observed this Ekādaśī, he got completely purified and got an effulgent body, and Garuḍa came and took him back to Godhead! Haribol! Just by this one Ekādaśī!

Question – Bengali: Please accept my respectful obeisances. How can we serve Lord Kṛṣṇa constantly, without getting into sense gratification? —Your spiritual son, Manohara Madana Mohana dāsa.

Jayapatākā Swami: The Lord says that He can be achieved by those who are surrendered to Him. Lord Caitanya is more merciful than Kṛṣṇa. Kṛṣṇa demands surrender, He will deliver you. Lord Caitanya gives out love of Kṛṣṇa first, and then you can achieve Kṛṣṇa. So, you can take Lord Caitanya’s mercy or you can take Lord Kṛṣṇa’s mercy Either way by Lord Caitanya’s mercy you get devotional service, and by bhakti you can achieve Kṛṣṇa. Or if you have bhakti, you can serve Kṛṣṇa, and you can achieve Him. So, since we need bhakti, we need Lord Caitanya’s mercy. That is why like, having prasāda in the Govinda Dvādaśī, in Śāntipura, gives you govinda-bhakti. And so, hearing the pastimes of Lord Caitanya, we can also achieve special mercy. Also, hearing the glories of Murāri Gupta, we get the mercy. Hearing the glories of Mukunda Datta we get mercy, hearing the glories of Haridāsa Ṭhākura we get mercy!

So, stay tuned in and the path to Kṛṣṇa upalabdi will be very short! Haribol! Thank you!

This is Vaiśākha month, you get 100 times this month. And today being the Ekādaśī of Vaiśākha, you get 100 times 100. So, it is a good chance to send in your donations for books or donation for the Nṛsiṁha-pūjā, or for the Food for Life, Devotee Care, etc. Hare Kṛṣṇa! Please indicate on the Māyāpur.com what you want to give for? Food for Life, Cows, Deities, Devotee Care, if you don’t indicate anything, they divide it between all the categories. Food for Life gets 20% so much %for Deity worship, so much for cows. So, if you want everything to get, don’t indicate anything. If you want to give for some specific topic, then indicate that.
