Oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya
Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 3.17.28
tvaṁ loka-pālo ’dhipatir bṛhac-chravā
vīryāpaho durmada-vīra-māninām
vijitya loke ’khila-daitya-dānavān
yad rājasūyena purāyajat prabho
Translation: You are the guardian of an entire sphere and a ruler of wide fame. Having crushed the might of arrogant and conceited warriors and hav-ing conquered all the Daityas and Dānavas in the world, you once performed a Rājasūya sacrifice to the Lord.
Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 3.17.29
sa evam utsikta-madena vidviṣā
dṛḍhaṁ pralabdho bhagavān apāṁ patiḥ
roṣaṁ samutthaṁ śamayan svayā dhiyā
vyavocad aṅgopaśamaṁ gatā vayam
Translation: Thus mocked by an enemy whose vanity knew no bounds, the worshipful lord of the waters waxed angry, but by dint of his reason he man-aged to curb the anger that had sprung up in him, and he replied: O dear one, we have now desisted from warfare, having grown too old for combat.
Purport: As we see, warmongering materialists always create fighting without reason.
Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 3.17.30
paśyāmi nānyaṁ puruṣāt purātanād
yaḥ saṁyuge tvāṁ raṇa-mārga-kovidam
ārādhayiṣyaty asurarṣabhehi taṁ
manasvino yaṁ gṛṇate bhavādṛśāḥ
Translation: You are so skilled in war that I do not see anyone else but the most ancient person, Lord Viṣṇu, who can give satisfaction in battle to you. Therefore, O chief of the asuras, approach Him, whom even heroes like you mention with praise.
Purport: Aggressive materialistic warriors are actually punished by the Supreme Lord for their policy of unnecessarily disturbing world peace. Therefore Varuṇa advised Hiraṇyākṣa that the right course to satisfy his fighting spirit would be to seek to fight with Viṣṇu.
Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 3.17.31
taṁ vīram ārād abhipadya vismayaḥ
śayiṣyase vīra-śaye śvabhir vṛtaḥ
yas tvad-vidhānām asatāṁ praśāntaye
rūpāṇi dhatte sad-anugrahecchayā
Translation: Varuṇa continued: On reaching Him you will be rid of your pride at once and will lie down on the field of battle, surrounded by dogs, for eter-nal sleep. It is in order to exterminate wicked fellows like you and to show His grace to the virtuous that He assumes His various incarnations like Varāha.
Purport: Asuras do not know that their bodies consist of the five elements of material nature and that when they fall they become objects of pastimes for dogs and vultures. Varuṇa advised Hiraṇyākṣa to meet Viṣṇu in His boar incarnation so that his hankering for aggressive war would be satisfied and his powerful body would be vanquished.

Jayapatākā Swami: It is very nice to see all you devotees, I am very happy to see you all, and offer all of you my best wishes. after a long gap. So these guards in Viṣṇuloka they were cursed and they accepted they would take three births as Lord Viṣṇu’s enemy. Somehow, Hiraṇyākṣa, he was the younger brother of Hiraṇyakaśipu. So, Hiraṇyakaśipu wanted to have him to help him conquer the world, and he came and challenged Varuṇa, please give me a fight! In the world today, are there any people who attack other countries? That country is not doing anything at first. They did not want to fight. But someone attacks them. So, it is not such an unusual thing. But Hiraṇyākṣa had challenged Varuṇa for a fight and he insulted him in some ways. So, Varuṇa, he controlled his anger, and he said I am too old to fight! You should fight with Lord Viṣṇu! And at that time, there was the Boar avatāra. So, Varuṇa indicated that he should see anyone else who would fight with him. So, one of our nine islands of Navadvīpa is named after Varāha because Lord Boar, He touched this Navadvīpa dhāma island with His rear foot when He struck Hiraṇyākṣa. The name of that island is Koladvīpa. Kola is one of the names of Varāhadeva. So, in this chapter we don’t read about that. This is a discussion between Hiraṇyākṣa and Varuṇa.
In the world today, there are many wars going on and it is not that every war is being asked for. Now it is therefore difficult to travel because we don’t know which places war is going on. So, these demons like Hiraṇyākṣa, they want to enjoy material energy. So, the materialists, they think that enjoying this body is the purpose of life. They don’t think that they are the soul, they think they are the bodies. They think I am the body, and some religious people think I have a soul. But the fact that I am a soul and I have a body, that very few people know. So the gross body is made of five gross elements. There is a subtle body – mana, buddhi, ahaṅkara – mind, false ego and intelligence. Some people think I am the mind, etc. But the Vaiṣṇavas think that we are the soul and we are atomic part and parcel of Kṛṣṇa. So when the demon dies, his body becomes a plaything for the dogs and vultures, Śrīla Prabhupāda mentions here. So Varuṇa is suggesting, telling him that he should meet Lord Viṣṇu in His Boar incarnation and fight with Him. So, we want to please guru and Kṛṣṇa. We are not interested in fighting with Lord Viṣṇu. Hiraṇyākṣa, because he and his brother wanted to go back quick to the sevā at the doorway of the spiritual world, so they opted for the three births’ option to go back quick for their sevā. So, they don’t remember that they were once the doorkeepers in Viṣṇuloka, but they are in this demoniac mentality.
We need to see how we can engage in the service of the Lord. Now we have the great opportunity that this Bhadra Pūrṇimā month is coming up. In Bhadra I where we try to distribute sets of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. His Holiness Bhakti Vijaya Bhāgavata Swami, has the marathon begun?
Bhakti Vijaya Bhāgavata Swami: This month we started the marathon and request for your blessings. All the community members, Nāma-haṭṭa members all will help and we hope that we will distribute 5000 Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam sets from Māyāpur.
Jayapatākā Swami: It says that 25 July 2025, the movie, ‘Mahā-avatāra Nṛsiṁhadeva’ is being released worldwide. So, that movie is produced by devotees. I have seen a trailer, and it is a very good movie! So this is your excuse to go to the theater! But we want to save the people from the demoniac elements. We want them to try to please Kṛṣṇa. Now, Pañca-tattva, Lord Caitanya are very, very merciful! Kṛṣṇa had the storehouse of love, but it was locked! And He only gave the contents to a few people! But Lord Caitanya, it is said that He and His associates looted the storehouse! Gaurāṅga! And They started to give out the contents! Who was qualified, who was not qualified, They did not see. They were giving it to whoever was coming to get it. So, Lord Caitanya wanted to see the whole universe being flooded with love of Kṛṣṇa! Now, because of the erratic climate situation, there are some places where there are floods and some places drought. When we had floods here in Māyāpur, then Śrīla Prabhupāda had said that flooding in Navadvīpa dhāma means that Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu desires that the whole world be flooded with his message. So this was the desire of Lord Caitanya that He would see the whole world, the whole universe flooded with love of Kṛṣṇa! Normally, to get this special mercy from Kṛṣṇa is very difficult. But Lord Caitanya, Lord Nityānanda, Advaita Ācārya, Gadādhara and Śrīvāsa made it very easy! So, everyone should know that this mercy of Lord Caitanya is now available! In the Brahma-vaivarta Purāṇa it says that there will be a ten-thousand year Golden Age. And so, that is supposed to start about five thousand years after the beginning of Kali-yuga. So, Lord Caitanya came 4,500 years after and Śrīla Prabhupāda gave 5,000 years after. Now, we don’t know if there will be a World War III or not. But there are plenty of wars! So, people who want peace in the world, they should chant Hare Kṛṣṇa and be Kṛṣṇa conscious devotees.
Hare Kṛṣṇa, Hare Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa, Hare Hare /
Hare Rāma, Hare Rāma, Rāma Rāma, Hare Hare!
So now, it came in the newscast yesterday there is some place in France or some-where where they work only 31 hours a week. And it said that their culture, history, promotes laziness! Russia works for more hours, China even more! But Bharata also works a lot! But many people, they would like peace in the world. So, tell them about this mercy of the Pañca-tattva! Now, we should not be lazy when it comes to devotional service. Those who are brahmacārīs, that means they have to control their senses and they like the renounced environment. But some people may feel more comfortable in a family setup. And in that āśrama of gṛhastha, they can have regulated sex life. But Śrīla Prabhupāda said, wherever you feel better, you be there. But continue the fight against Māyā. But we don’t want to be lazy, whatever āśrama we choose, we want to help Lord Caitanya to deliver the world! I mean, even there was a lady who was pregnant, Lord Caitanya said that you will have a son and call him this name, He was so merciful! But in comparison, Choṭa Haridāsa went and talked to some lady alone. Because he was a brahmacārī, so Lord Caitanya banished him and did not see him. So, we see that this dichotomy was there, that we should follow whatever the āśrama we are in, properly. Brahmacārīs, sannyāsīs, vānaprasthas and gṛhasthas – whoever we are.
Any questions or comments?
Question (Bhakti Vijaya Bhāgavata Swami): Very nice class, dear Guru Mahārāja! We always eagerly look forward to this Saturday class of yours. You said that Pañca-tattva and Lord Gaurāṅga are very merciful and They wanted to inundate everyone in the ocean of love of Kṛṣṇa. But when we go out to preach, we see only 2 or 3 per cent of people in the world become devotees. When will Lord Caitanya’s desire be fulfilled when everyone become devotees?
Jayapatākā Swami: He empowers us, it is up to us to preach. Day after the return Ratha in Digha, they had three lakhs of people! Yesterday, we had 29,000 people in Māyāpur. In the temple, they said, 25,000. But they said, in Śrīla Prabhupāda Samādhi, only 6,000! So, why a lot of people do not go to the samādhi? We were told that when the TOVP will be open, many people will come. Anyway, you have set up a book table in Digha. And yesterday I heard your department sold around 8,000 books from the book table. So Bhadra Pūrṇimā, we should distributes sets of Bhāgavatam.
Question: How can we celebrate Śrīla Prabhupāda Vyāsa-pūjā?
Jayapatākā Swami: All the devotees should write Śrīla Prabhupāda Vyāsa-pūjā homage and give it to the book table inside the temple.
Today I am going for my dialysis now.
